Vehicle Protection
Please use fender covers, seat covers, steering wheel cover
or paper pads to protect your vehicle from damage or
contamination.

Safe Operation
Do not operate the engine for an extended period of time in
a maintenance shop without proper exhaust ventilation (e.g.
without ventilating duct).
Keep the maintenance shop well ventilated and away from
any inflammable materials. Special care should be taken when
using any inflammable or poisonous materials (e.g. gasoline).
When discarding used oil or disposing of oil in parts after an
oil change, local regulations should be observed.
When working with related hot parts, rotating parts or
sliding parts, care should be taken to avoid burns and injury.

Do not work under the vehicle while it is supported only by

the jack. Support the vehicle with safety stands at the specified
positions.
Before jacking up the vehicle, support it at the specified
positions and lock it with safety devices.
When removing a heavy component such as the engine and
suspension, be careful not to lose your balance and drop them
(including vehicle body).

Proper Operation
Before diagnosing a problem, you should surely know the
symptoms in order to select related operation procedures.
Before removal or disassembly, check for correct installation
first. If matching marks are required, please make sure that
these marks will not affect functioning of the parts on which
they are made.
After removal, parts marked NON-REUSABLE
(including oil seals, washers, gaskets, O-rings, lock washers,
split pins and self-locking nuts) should be replaced by new
ones.
Inner and outer races of tapered or inclined roller bearings
GI-9

should be replaced in groups.

Arrange disassembled parts in order and prevent them from
mixing together.
Before inspection or assembly, clean or wash disassembled
parts first.
Genuine NISSAN replacement parts should be used.
Licensed greases and sealants should be used.
Keep baking finished surfaces on the vehicle body or other
parts from contamination with brake fluid. If brake fluid spill
is found, wipe baking finished surfaces and wash them with
water rapidly.
Do not reuse drained brake fluid.
Before disconnecting a pressure line, release pressure in it
first.
After servicing the fuel supply, oil, coolant, exhaust or
vacuum system, please be sure to check it for leaks.

GI-10
Precautions on maintenance

Inspection of electrical system

If a symptom is suspected to be caused by the electrical system, you should check for blown fuses or fusible
links, opens in circuits close to connectors, and disconnected terminals or sectional faults first, and then
perform trouble diagnosis.
If a fuse or fusible link is blown, determine possible causes and restore it. Replace it with a new fuse or
fusible link with fixed capacity.
Please refer to the figure below for the fuse numbers on the fuse box. The fuse box is located below and on
the right side of the driver side dashboard.
Please refer to the figure below for numbering of fuses and fusible links in the mark box of fusible links.
The mark box of fusible links is located on the left side of the engine room.

Electrical System Inspection (continued)

When working with the electrical system, turn off the
ignition switch and lamp switch to avoid fire caused by short
circuit, and remove the connector of the battery negative
terminal.
After battery terminals are disconnected, memory stored in
the radio and each control unit will be erased.

pointed end of a test probe should be devised. (For example,
arrange a superfine sharp pin at the end of the test probe or
wrap the probe with fine copper wires, etc.)
Pointed tip Check input and output signals of control units with
specified adapters.

When removing a connector, do not hold and twist its body

too hard.
Do not disconnect any connector by pulling its harness.
In the case of a latch-type connector, disconnect its latch first
and then disconnect the connector while holding its body.

Before connecting the joint, check the terminal for

Bending flexure or fracture. Then connect it securely.
In the case of a latch-type connector, press down the
connector until its latch surely engages.
When installing a part, avoid any harness being excessively
pulled or held down.

Precautions on maintenance

Precautions on control elements and electric parts

Do not connect battery terminals with reversed polarity.
Install only parts specified for each vehicle model.
Before replacing the control unit, check its input and output
signals as well as functions of the component parts.
When disconnecting a connector, do not twist it or apply
excessive force.
Fixing bolt
In the case of a bolt-type connector, loosen bolt mounting it
first, and then disconnect it while holding its body.

Precautions for Control Units and Electrical Parts (Continued)

Before connecting the joint, check the terminal for flexure or
fracture. Then connect it securely. In the case of a bolt-type
connector, fix it by tightening the mounting bolt until the
painted lug becomes even with the surface so as to make sure
the connector has been surely connected.

element dabbled with rain or water. If any water drops are found
adhered to the control unit, wipe them up fully first before
installing it.
Surely protect the control unit connector from contamination
with oil stains.
Avoid cleaning the control unit with solvent.
Do not open the top or bottom cover of the control unit.
When using a circuit tester, be sure to maintain an
Battery
voltage appropriate distance between its test probes. It is recommended
that a larger distance be maintained. Insufficient distance may
cause the test probes to contact with each other thus resulting
in short circuiting. Short circuiting will cause battery voltage to
Checked Control element be applied directly on the control unit thus resulting in damage
portion to the power transistor in it.
When checking input and output signals of the control unit,
Circuit tester use the specified check adapter.

Precautions on installation of radio equipment

When installing general/amateur radio equipment or a
vehicular telephone, check the following items. These devices
may affect the electric control system depending on their
mounting positions.
Split the antenna and keep it as far away from the ECM
control unit as possible.
The antenna feeder should be arranged so that it is at least 20
cm from the harness of the control unit.
Adjust the antenna and its feeder to eliminate radio wave
interference.
Check grounding of the car radio.
Precautions on SRS airbag and belt tension device
Before starting maintenance work, please be sure to read
Precautions on page SRS-2 of the SRS section so as to know
the details of how to service the SRS air bag and seat belt
pre-tensioner correctly and safely.
If an item requires the SRS air bag and seat belt
pre-tensioner to be taken into consideration, then an Air Bag
mark will be added to the table of contents of each section
even if the item involves other maintenance work which is not
directly related to the SRS air bag and seat belt pre-tensioner.
Please refer to Precautions on page SRS-2 of the SRS
section for the maintenance work involved in this item.

GI-14
Precautions on maintenance

Caution:
Incorrect maintenance work may result in accidental deployment of the SRS air bag and seat belt
pre-tensioner. Follow the correct maintenance procedure only and take extra care!
Do not check circuits of the SRS air bag and seat belt pre-tensioner with a circuit tester.
When servicing the SRS air bag and seat belt pre-tensioner, the air bag sensor unit with any harness not
connected or mounting bolt getting loose can lead to improper operation of the former. After servicing, you
should carefully check each part to make sure the system can function normally.
Each harness related to the SRS air bag and seat belt pre-tensioner is provided with a yellow covering on the
lower part of its connector neck for distinguishing it from harnesses of other systems.
The SRS air bag and seat belt pre-tensioner system is located:
in steering wheel column, and
floor console of instrument panel.
The SRS air bag and seat belt pre-tensioner may be affected when these devices work. Follow the correct
working procedure only and work with care!
Examples of related work
Replace steering pinion and service steering wheel parts.
Install in-vehicle audio system.
Remove and install instrument panel and service its interior.
Service floor-type console parts.

Caution:
Park the vehicle on a level surface when jacking it up
using a garage jack. Please make sure to avoid service lines
being held down by or impeding the vehicle.
When jacking up the vehicle on the front (rear) side,
secure it at rear (front) of the rear (front) wheels. After
supporting the vehicle with safety stands, secure wheels at
both sides of rear (front) wheels.
Do not work under the vehicle while it is supported only
by the jack. The vehicle should be supported by safety
stands.
