FUCNTIONAL DATUM

A datum feature is an important feature a

locating or a positioning feature. A datum
feature can be a face, or a hole, in a component
which is of importance to the function of the
component in the machine
In preparation of component detail drawing
from the assembly drawing, it is necessary
to identify the function datum faces and holes-
those faces and holes which are critical in
the function of the component.

These features will have small tolerance

dimensions.

the groove is functionally important, both to the right hand
end face and the right hand end face.

Hence for the turning operation a direct

dimension ( with appropriate limits ) is
required for the length of 39mm diameter .

These limits cant be obtained by adding the

limits mentioned on functional lengths.
MANUFACTURING DATUM

The Manufacturing datum face for the

turning operation is the right hand end face
of the component.
-A change of the datum face.
-

When the datum face is changed there is ,

inevitably , a reduction in tolerance in one
or more , dimensions.
Further the dimensions must never be
duplicated. This means that , in showing
the new dimensions for the length of
39mm diameter, one of the two chain
dimensions 35.3 And 15.00
35.0 14.85

Must be omitted from the drawing.

In the interest of obtaining the largest tolerance
possible for the dimensions involved, the
dimensions having the largest tolerance will be
omitted. 35.3 15.00
And
35.0 14.85
because the tolerance of the omitted dimension is the
total tolerance for the remaining , controlling dimensions
CHANGING THE DATUM

Decide the required manufacturing datum face.

Decide the required manufacturing dimension (s)[

which also involves deciding the omitted dimension
(s).

Determine the tolerance for each of the (new)

manufacturing dimensions.

Set suitable limits for all but one of the required

dimensions.

Determine the limits of the final dimension.
