 THESIS THEME AND RATIONALE

For this academic year, the theme for the thesis shall be ICONS-
Architectural Images of Coherence and Order to the Non Peripheral Society.
Thestudent proponent shall have to come up with a thesis which will embody
conceptsand design solutions that are locally feasible and globally competitive
with eventually served as an icon of what Filipino Architecture is.

Today the quality of Architecture is now lost in the adrenaline rush of such
architects and designers alike. Architecture has now become a lifelong
materialistic buffet that relies on existing design ideas to display newer forms of
abundance, and make them available to a growing market of consumers. In the
age of malls there lies a hunger for novelty and delight. The fate of a building is
now becoming of a commercial commodity.

The old definitions of architecture as creating spaces of rest, containment,

comfort and protection dont make sense anymore. Architecture can only be
directed towards real life situations, built on an assumption that any desired
change is effective only if it is an enhancement of the present condition.

Unfortunately, the philosophy and principles followed by the pillars and

masters of the Architecture profession is in jeopardy. The evolution of the end
product that is aesthetically pleasing to the eye, the influences by the artistic
taste of an individual, and the idea to design beyond what is predictable.

Aesthetic is of the major principle of Architecture that architects and

designers have to worship and now it the era to design beyond the periphery and
create structure to serve as icons of Architecture.

DESIGN CRETERIA AND PARAMETERS

The thesis proponent are given the following list of design parameters and
incorporate these in their chosen proposal. Theseparameters should provide
adequate foundation for the title/proposal.

GENERAL DOCUMENT FORMAT

Correct format is a critical piece of presenting the thesis to the committee. Be

sure to follow the format conventions below:

Short, substance 20 or 24 bond paper

NOTHING is written in the margins
NOTHING is written in the margin
-point Times font for body text, captions, and labels on visuals

not listed as i, following numbers (ii, iii, etc.) at bottom center of pages
, starting with the number 1
on the first page of Chapter 1
-oriented pages

; one double space only between

paragraphs
chapters and sections (1.0, 2.0, 3.0) used in place of chapters. Begin
each major section on a new page.
-sided pages, 1.5-spaced, except the items below:
Preliminary pages (acknowledgements, single items requiring more than
one line in the table of contents, list of figures, list of tables, or list of
nomenclature).
Glossary entries
Tables within the text.
References, Definitions, Bulleted Items, and Footnotes (singlespaced
within, 1.5-spaced between entries)
CHAPTER 1 : INTRODUCTION
The thesis should use headings to indicate major sections. Any heading should
provide at least a full sentence of text before leading to another heading. Left justify
headings, and format them according to the following conventions:

A uniform pattern for the cover of the Thesis Book must be

followed. The cover shall also be in portrait format using the text font and
sizes as indicated in Figure-
