FIRST DATA LAUNCHES “FIRST ALERT” IN EUROPE
First Data, Europe’s leading card
transaction processor, announced the
launch of “First Alert”, a new fully
automated power-agent for fraud
detection developed by First Data and
Adeptra, providers of two-way real-
time alerting technology.
Card fraud cost the UK £411.4 million in
2001 – a figure that is rising by 30%
annually. First Alert has been developed
in response to these figures and the
urgent need for earlier detection of
payment card fraud. The system is
already in production with First Data
customers in the US and is now
available to First Data customers in the
UK and Europe. The First Alert system
automates the contact strategy and
repetitive tasks of a card issuer’s fraud
agents by automatically telephoning
cardholders in suspected fraud cases
and trying all their contact numbers in
turn based on rules set by the issuer.
Once cardholders are located by the
system, the very latest natural
language speech technology
authenticates them, and then asks
them to verify the suspect transactions.
The First Alert system allows card
issuers to detect more fraud, earlier in
the cycle, at lower cost and with fewer
referrals at point of sale. Should the
cardholder not recognize the
transactions, the system automatically
transfers them to an agent for further
investigation. On the contrary, the
system automatically releases the case
and updates the account memo.

product family, the Authenticator. The
reader, extremely thin, lightweight (40g)
and durable, is suitable for mobile use
and in line with the eCode concept: no
need for personalization of the reader,
as the confidential data is in the smart
card. This makes the readers easy to
distribute in large numbers. The
Authenticator is also future and
backward compatible, as the firmware
is independent of changes in EMV or
other smart card specs. The large, 14
character display allows for long one
time codes and signatures.

Datakey announced its comprehensive
solution for simplifying access and
identity management throughout large
and medium-size enterprises, Datakey
Axis. The system addresses key
challenges that many organizations
face when managing how users log-on
to corporate resources like their
network, company applications, a VPN
or protected web site. Datakey Axis
consolidates all credentials (passwords,
certificates, shared secrets, biometric
templates) on one smart card and
automates user access to corporate
applications through a single smart
card sign-on. For the administrator,
Datakey Axis automates policy,
credential and desktop management
through a Management Center, making
it easier to configure and deploy smart
cards for a complete range of corporate
resources – without touching the
infrastructure or requiring any changes
to existing applications. Administrators
can enforce strong password policies
and automatically push updated
credentials to user smart cards without
the user knowing the password or
taking any action.
