ABSTRACT:
Experiment No. 5 “Center Of Gravity and Equilibrium” helped us to understand how the weight
of the beam on which the forces act behaves like a force concentrated at the center of gravity of
the beam. It also helped us determine the conditions of the equilibrium for several parallel forces.
Through the use of meter stick, we were able to understand the concept of torque as well. Once
we were able to locate the center of gravity of the meter stick and applying some weights, we
were able to balance the meter stick by adjusting the fulcrum. Once it is balanced, we record the
experimental values, then comparing the results of the computed values.

QUESTIONS AND PROBLEMS:

1. Define the following:
a) the moment of force
The moment of force is the measure of the turning effect, or torque, produced by force
acting on a body. It is equal to the product of the force and the perpendicular distance from its
line of action to the point, or pivot, about which the body will turn.
b) the center of gravity
The center of gravity is usually defined as the center of mass and the acceleration due
to gravity. Thus, the center of gravity is the average position of weight distribution.

2. Differentiate translational and rational equilibrium.

For translational equilibrium, it means constant velocity in a straight line with all forces
balanced to zero (note that v=0 is a constant also, so the body could be at rest, but isn't required to
be) while the rotational equilibrium is accelerating in the rotational frame. Conversely, an object
in equilibrium in the rotational frame of reference with angular velocity not equal to zero is
accelerating in the translational frame of rotational frame of reference equilibrium means that the
angular velocity is constant and all force balance. The difference is that an object in equilibrium
with velocity not equal to zero in the translational frame of reference reference.

3. A uniform rod 1 m long weighs 150 N and is supported on some fulcrum. Weights of 40 N and
50 N are suspended from the two ends of the rod. Find the position of the fulcrum if the system is
in equilibrium.
