Intention
The present material reflects the educational process and didactic methodology which define the Faculty of
Architecture and Urbanism of the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca. It has been conceived as a support
for analysis and debate, so that it may strengthen the educational philosophy in the years to come, as well as
the longer term strategies.
The evolution of the school has been marked by several important moments:
- The accreditation received from ARACIS from the Ministry of Education in 1994, 2004 and reconfirmed in
2009;
- The creation, since 2002, of the Restoration Studies Post-graduate Academic Formation FESRPA part of
a European consortium, with a Franco-Romanian jury, with a diploma recognized in Walonnie and part of
France;
- The creation of the Post-graduate Urban and Public Administration Academic Formation, since 2005;
- Obtaining the IOSUD qualification (Organizing PhD Studies Institution) in the field of architecture, since
2009, as part of a consortium whose other members are the Ion Mincu University of Architecture, Bucharest
an the A.I. Cuza University, Iasi;
- The recognition of the diploma granted by the Ion Mincu University (by the European Parliament
Commission, in 2008; by the French Ministry of Culture as well as the RIBA), stimulates FAU, through its
close collaboration with the Bucharest University in elaborating its curricula, to attain similar recognition.
In this spirit, based on the recommendations of Directive 36 of 2005 of this commission, architectural
education has been reviewed and restructured, supported by the basic architect formative skills, agreed upon
by the European Commission. This material reflects changes in the traditional structure of the school. Higher
education of architecture is only part of the training, which in a modern sense, is a continuous process. Thus,
the principle elements regarding the architectural formation in Romanian schools are:
I. Education structure: 1st and second integrated cycles, which include the Masters degree ; preparation
spans over 12 semesters and implies acquiring 360 academic credits.
2. Defining the content of the curricula has followed the recommendations stipulated by the UNESCO Chart
UIA and the Directive 85/384/EEC regarding the formation in the field of architecture ; also, Article 46 of
Directive 2005 /36/EC.
3. The organization of the curricula aims to a progressive assimilation of professional abilities and acquiring
the qualifications necessary in the practice of architecture. The education is built upon the idea of a
formative evolution of the student, while permanently updating the objectives and methods.
4. A progressive growth of the complexity of the study problematic, while diversifying the didactic
methodology as well as the professional options, by offering many formative routes.
5. Establishing a balanced ratio among the 18 components of distinct professional fields in the architectural
formation and integrating the education on practice with theoretical thinking in what concerns the object
and phenomenon of architecture.
6. Establishing a sensitive and democratic relation between students and teachers, inside the architecture
studios, during the practical works, the research and PhD studies, so that the professional growth of each
student may be stimulated.
7. Permanently controlling the quality of the academic staff, which are evaluated annually (the didactic,
scientific and academic aspects are considered).
8. Permanently validating the quality of teaching by inviting foreign professionals to take part in the diploma
juries of the faculty, and also through the results obtained by students during scholarships in EU countries.
9. Maintaining an open dialogue with the local, national and international professional organizations.
Continuous post-academic formation of the alumni, through periodical internships and evaluations.
We hope that the efforts to permanently improve the training of architects, reflected in this material may, by
its very nature be completed with suggestions, proposals and recommendations, aiming to develop an
education of high performance and of European compatibility.

INTRODUCTION
The higher education of architecture date back in Romania to the year
1892, when it was set up as a private school. In 1897, the first state school of
architecture was established as a department of Belles Arts of Bucharest. Until
1970 the Institute of Architecture Ion Mincu was the unique forum of education
field in Romania.
In 1970 other three new architectural education centers were established in
Cluj-Napoca, Iasi and Timisoara which curriculum referred to a three year long
study. The students received a first diploma (B. Sc. Degree) but about 60% of
them went to complete studies and graduated this second stage in Bucharest.
In 1983 this three sections of architecture were arbitrarily abolished and
until 1990 Bucharest remained the unique center of architecture education in the
country. In 1990, after many memorandums and letter sanded to the Ministry o
Education, this Ministry admitted the opening of former schools of architecture in
the three regional centers of Romania. At the beginning the status of these three
schools was as Section of Faculties of Civil Engineering of Technical
Universities.
In 1998 the School of Cluj obtained the status of Faculty of Architecture
and Urban Planning as a nine faculty of Technical University. In the last years the
other two schools of architecture from Timisoara and Iasi obtained the same
status.
During the last two decades, the evolution of the Faculty of Cluj has been
marked by several important events like:
- The ARACIS accreditation from the Ministry of Education in 1994, 2004 and
reconfirmed in 1998.
- The creation in 2002 of the Restoration Architecture Studies as a Deep Academic
Post-Graduate Program FESPRA part of an European consortium with a Franco-
Belgium-Romanian jury and European diploma
- The creation of Post-graduate Deep Academic studies of Urban and Public
Administration since 2005
- Obtaining the IOSUD qualification ( Organizing PhD studies Institution) in 2009
part of many Romanian Universities.
The Technical University of Cluj-Napoca (UTCN) is one of the four
universities with a technical profile in Romania, qualified in the category of
Advanced research and education universities. For the quality of the education
provided, UTCN has been accredited on a national level by ARACIS as highly

CURRICULA DESCRIPTION
FIRST YEAR
MATHEMATICS
The mathematics course develops the study of spatial geometry and calculus problems
that can be applied in the field of architecture.
CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS
The course consists of an introduction into constructive thinking. It discusses the
interrelation between architecture and materials, taking into account more than just the
technical aspects (production processes, physical and mechanical properties, technical
matters or long term behaviour). Several architectural highlights throughout history
show each materials structural purpose, underlining fundamental values which never
age. Studied materials: wood, natural stone, clay, ceramics, binder, concrete, metal,
glass, plastic materials.
DESCRIPTIVE GEOMETRY 1, 2
The Descriptive Geometry Course and its seminary work are presenting problems of
bi-dimensional representation of architectural forms using a cylindrical projection
method. Through the course of the first semester, the students are familiarized with the
methods of representation of the main geometric elements (point, line, plane, volume)
their different positions in space, their sectional cuts, intersections and scaling.
15
THE FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN PLANNING - UT CLUJ
BASIC DESIGN 1, 2
The study of composition and its basic rules and types is accomplished through a
series of studio exercises that alternate different graphic rendering techniques. The
studio work is done under the supervision of both graphic artists as well as architects.
ARCHITECTURE STUDIO 1, 2
The architectural design studio objectives are focused on the ability of the students to
produce mainly conceptual projects with small and basic functions, (at least three per
semester) which address the problems of space, form and use.
URBAN EVOLUTION
The second semester of the first year continues the introductory notions in Urbanism
with historical aspects of the development of urban settlements. Presenting the various
urban patterns and mutations specific to geographical, social, cultural, economical and
political determinants in a historical growth, the main purpose of the course is to
assure a cultural background for understanding the making of urbanism along the time
and synthesize the necessary conditions for the generation of theories and urban
principles.
CONSTRUCTION ELEMENTS
Being initiated in the logics of construction, while using construction materials, the
student can understand, explain and draw in detail different types of construction
schemes. Several aspects of construction theory (classifications of structural shapes
seen from a stress distribution point of view), construction physics (the influence of
aggressive natural agents), technological requirements, help in understanding the
composition of constructive elements specific to different structural systems (bearing

masonry, traditional and modern wood structures, reinforced concrete and metal
structures). The course comprises two semesters.
PRACTICE 1
The practical work credits are awarded for participation in workshops, training camps,
study trips, and special extracurricular activities. These activities are a add-on to the
curricular subjects and are a means of experimenting with real life situations, building
materials and construction sites. The first year practical work consists of a study trip in
which observation drawing is encouraged.
SECOND YEAR
PERSPECTIVE
The Perspective Course is dedicated to the problems of representation of architectural
forms in a conic projection system. It is a follow up of the Descriptive geometry and
Geometry of Form lectures of the first year. The course establishes the ground rules of
technical perspective drafting, using correct measurement methods. As it is based
strictly on geometrically determined drafting, rather than free hand drawing, it serves
as an initiation in the later CAD 3D modelling lectures.
MECHANICS / STATICS
The study of mechanics and statics is aimed at developing a set of basic skills
necessary for architects when negotiating with structural concepts. Thus to better
understand the way structures work, basic calculus is done for simple elements. The
students are familiarized with the basic rules of static dimensioning and material
strength, notions that are essential for further use within the practical field of
architecture.
and "Genius Loci" are approached critically in their historical dimension, as connected
to the precise moments of (post)modernity that generated or reclaimed them, then put
into the context of contemporary debates on globalization. Between the two opposite
points of view - architecture as a purposeful resistance in face of an all-destructive
globalization, on the one hand, and architecture freed from any local limitation, on the
other hand - the course tries to induce to the students the desire for a personal and
open point of view.
CONSTRUCTION ELEMENTS 2
This course that spans for the entirety of the second year has a formative/informative
subject matter that primarily presents the different building parts and the constructive
relationships between them. It touches on both structural al non-structural building
elements, and highlights the link between building function, structural system,
architecture, and material and erection technology.
BASIC DESIGN 3, 4
In the first semester the Basic Design Studio is dedicated to modelling and the study
of three-dimensional compositional rules. Following a Bauhaus work model students
are experimenting within the framework of several small-scale models different spatial
definitions and the relationships between objects in space. Attention is given to
regulatory paths, orderly structures, hierarchy, collision, tension, intersection, grids
and patterns, etc. The studio is co-ordinate by a mixed team of architects and artists.
The second semester is dedicated to the study of specific architectural forms and their
specificity within a particular program. Special emphasis is put on the influence of the
structures generated by nature through parametric repetition, and their applicability
within the stages of concept design.
ARCHITECTURE STUDIO 3, 4
The second year Architectural Design Studio is focused on projects based on the
theory of housing, thus introducing for the first time specific functional requirements.
The first semester is dedicated to an individual house in a natural site, thus studying
18

the relation between object and context, between the living space and its surroundings,
climate, and orientation. Students are presented with real sites around the city, usually
scarred by various ecological problems and degradation that has to be addressed in the
proposed solutions. The second semester introduces an urban context in which the
design has to relate to existing buildings and architectural morphologies. First notions
of urbanism are presented within the analysis phase of the project.
The studio work is further linked to Theory of Architecture, Form Study Studio,
History of Architecture, Basics of Civil Engineering, and Structural Mechanics.
URBAN DWELLING
This course presents the development of urban settlements throughout history
differentiating between various growth patterns and mutations specific to
geographical, cultural, economical and political determinants.
ARCHITECTURAL DETAILS 1
This course, that spans two semesters, being linked with the design studio, aims in
presenting the student with the different types of architectural finishing, their
technologies and specific details. It is backed by seminary work in which the
theoretical aspects are studied and applied through case exemplifications, drafting,
modelling and site visits.
PRACTICE 2
The practical work credits are awarded for participation in workshops, training camps,
study trips, and special extracurricular activities. These activities are a add-on to the
curricular subjects and are a mean of experimenting with real life situations, building
materials and construction sites. The first year practical work consists of a study trip in
which observation drawing is encouraged.

THIRD YEAR
ARCHITECTURAL PROGRAMMES
The course treats the following main subjects: understanding the term USE in a
perspective of necessity, commodity, comfort, ergonomics, economy, physiology,
psychology, sociology; understanding the importance of the theme as generator of
strategy and project; analyzing different types of buildings.
CONSTRUCTION INSTALLATIONS
The goal of the lectures is to provide the student with sufficient technical knowledge
about the basic concepts and rules of HVAC design as to be able to lead a technical
project as chief of design, as well as to ensure a successful collaboration with the
dedicated engineers. The course is again directly linked with the architectural design
studio.
ARCHITECTURAL DETAILS 2
The continuation of the previous year course, aims in presenting the student with more
types of architectural finishing, their technologies and specific details. It is backed by
seminary work in which the theoretical aspects are studied and applied through case
exemplifications, drafting, modelling and site visits.
AMBIENT
The project is intended for the practical exercise of functional and aesthetic knowledge
in shaping an interior space, using the specific course information, and also the
gradual development of the students creativity and taste, artistic individuality. The
course and its seminary is further linked with the optional interior design project.

THE FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN PLANNING - UT CLUJ
THEORY OF STRUCTURES 1
The lecture familiarizes the students with the specific technical skills necessary for
architects in order to correctly use the basic structural concepts, useful for the
dimensioning of bearing elements sections of brick and reinforced concrete. It teaches
the basic concepts of Civil Constructions, Constructions of pre-stressed reinforced
concrete, necessary for the training of future architects. The contribution as percentage
of the discipline to cultivate the competence lines of the field of specialization in
Architecture is about 20%.
ARCHITECTURE STUDIO 5, 6
The 3rd year architecture studio mainly focuses on two issues: the urban
relationships of architecture and defining the concept in the project.
These issues are addressed in the case of two very different programs: a flexible,
open and quasi-public program (a student centre), which allows the focusing on
the urban relationships and the design quality of architecture; a collective housing
program, in which other difficulties add to the proposed issues, such as: the serial
character, bigger size development, functional complexity of a mixed
development.
The relationship between architecture and the city is, in a certain amount,
synonymous with the relationship between the private and the public space. The
architecture project is second to the urban situation; the idea of urbanity itself
supposes that the private space is secondary to the public one. However, urban
limitations are abstract enough for leaving to architecture a substantial margin of
action. The main 3rd year studio's objective is the understanding of how the
precedence of urbanism over architecture works, but also by which means
architecture can be creative nevertheless in the condition of urban constraints.
SPECIAL DESIGN 1, 2
This practical seminary attempts to create the opportunity for students to get familiar
with small scale projects having a well defined degree of specificity. During the first
semester, the project developed is a furniture and interior design one, while during the
second semester, they deal with technical problems inside a building.
21

in training, because it offers the possibility to use the computer and increase the work
capacity of the architectural designer.
FURNITURE DESIGN -
The course aims to present the basic notions regarding the function, dimension, and
structure in furniture design, and to highlight the aesthetic aspects, the connection
between material, structure and aesthetic expression, and also the relations between
furniture and the space in which it is located.
PRACTICE 3
Third year practical work is done in specialized workshops, organized mainly on
construction sites focused on heritage and traditional building techniques.
FOURTH YEAR
22
THE FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN PLANNING - UT CLUJ
SOCIOLOGY (elective B)
The course is focused on the relation between space (natural and artificial
environment), places - constituted be architectural and urban design, social practices -
on one side, and society as outcome of social relations and interactions. The main
question is: is an ecologically constituted space/place inducing an ecological
equilibrium at the level of human urban communities? To answer this question the
course offers on overlook of ecological approaches dedicated to city and urban
settlements, starting with the human ecology (Chicago school), social ecology (A
Hawley) the role of politics and economics in shaping the urban landscape (Castells
and Levebvre) and the urban ecology as way of thinking and solving not only
technical problems of different forms of pollution but also preventing ecological
damages through careful design and respect to environment.
CONSTRUCTION PHYSICS 1, 2
The scope is to give adequate knowledge of physical problems and technologies of
buildings in order to provide them with internal conditions of comfort and protection
against climate factors and noise exposure. Thus it teaches the necessary design skills
so that the future architects are able to respond with efficiency to the constraints
imposed by energy factors and building regulations.
THEORY OF STRUCTURES 3, 4
The lecture further familiarizes the students with the specific technical skills necessary
for architects in order to correctly use the basic structural concepts, continuing the
approach of the third year.
solutions, a sustainable, ecologic, and economic design process that is based on the
application of advanced technologies.
SPECIAL DESIGN 3, 4
The projects developed in each semester of the fourth year of study, has the main
purpose to exercise basics of urban planning, functional requirements and
compositional aspects specific in a small dwellings neighbourhood. The project
focuses specific technical aspects of urbanism.
RESTORATION OF MONUMENTS
The course discusses conservation form a historical and theoretical point of view.
Post-modernism is discussed as a concept of conservation, international charts and
guidelines are analyzed, as well as world heritage politics and attitudes, aiming at a
sensitive formation in the field of architectural heritage and its theory.
CONTEMPORARY TOWN
The course focuses on urban patterns and meanings in urban planning through the
XXth century. Developing a critical approach of planning strategies, in a comparative
discourse referenced to historical models, the main purpose of this course based on
24
THE FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN PLANNING - UT CLUJ

Fourth year practical work is done in specialized workshops, usually dedicated to
urban planning and analysis workshops. Students are encouraged to take part in
international events and the school and its external collaborators usually offer several
such extracurricular opportunities.
FIFTH YEAR
LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE
Landscaping and site design are integral part in the design process of either grass field
projects, large-scale urban planning schemes or damaged sites regeneration strategies.
Students are familiarized with specific knowledge from the field of landscaping, from
both an aesthetic/ stylistic perspective as well as a technical applicative one. Seminary
work is dedicated to landscaping solutions based on the main architectural design
studio work.
DESIGN
Aiming to develop a creative thinking of the architectural object, the course
approaches design form a historical to a methodological point of view, stressing
problems such as perception, psychology, marketing, social ethics, kitsch-art.
SPECIAL STRUCTURES
Aiming to prepare students for complex buildings with larger structural spans, the
course is an introduction towards types of structures which pose specific bearing
problems and the way this can be reflected in the objects form.
25
THE FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN PLANNING - UT CLUJ
URBAN ECOLOGY
The course aims at approaching the urban space as an open, complex and integrated
system which comprises the sustainable development component in the planning
process. It aims at creating a theoretical basis for structuring a plan of action for
specific urban problems.
URBAN REGULATIONS
The course explores the legal foundations of planning in Romania. Case studies and
legal readings provide the foundations to understanding zoning, environmental law,
aesthetic regulations, and housing policies. Major changes in urban law in Romania
and their implications for urban planning and development will be introduced and
discussed.

COMPARATIVE ARCHITECTURE
This set of optional lectures and seminary work creates a bridge between Romanian
and universal architecture following a chronological timeline, placing local
architectural discourses and schools within a wider European context.
27
THE FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN PLANNING - UT CLUJ
CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT 1, 2
In the advent of the new severe economic crisis that faces Europe, and the ever
diminishing financial resources, cost effectiveness is becoming a paradigm of modern
architecture. Thus the management course highlights the constraints imposed by cost
factors and building regulations on the final architectural product, presenting the
different project and building management systems, as well as cost control and
efficiency within the design and building phases. Within seminary work student are
taught the basis of cost estimation calculus, and the means of optimization from the
earliest design stages, by applying cost effective architectural solutions
SPECIAL DESIGN 5, 6
The theme of this project in the first semester of the fifth year is based on a specific
need: a new public space in our town, Cluj-Napoca. Erected in de-structured areas,
from both point of view of landscapes and buildings, this urban space must recreate
the sense of a community and also a strong landmark for the town. The project focuses
on analyzing and understanding, creating specificity, proposing the functional
requirements and achieving the necessary technical aspects to restructure a site.
The second semester aims at developing a complex structural project in relation with
the design studio, teaching the students both notions of calculus and structure
dimensioning and the collaboration architect-civil engineer.
URBAN COMPOSITION
This course aims through presentations and case studies from the traditional,
modern, and contemporary practice - at studying the elements that form the city as
well as the way in which they interact. The course has in view the achievement of a
specific professional culture to offer the students both a coherent system of analyzing
the urban form, and a theoretical platform for the competent approach of the exercises
proposed in school and met in professional practice.
AESTHETICS
This discipline contains mostly theoretical philosophical aspects of architectural
training and aims to achieve the acquisition of the following knowledge and skills:
adequate knowledge of the history and theories of architecture and the related arts and
human sciences, knowledge of the fine arts, understanding of the profession of
architecture and the role of the architect in society. It encourages a critical discourse,
through a phenomenological study of the problematic of architecture and the culture
industry in general.
28
THE FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN PLANNING - UT CLUJ
CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY
The Technology lecture aims to achieve the acquisition of the specific knowledge and
skills that are required at project level, to solve the technical problems generated by
the non structural components of the building: the envelope, partitioning, flooring,
ceiling, etc. These aspects are studied both globally through comparisons and case
studies as well as in detail highlighting their specificity.
PRACTICE 5
Practical work for this year is done in architectural offices, as a method of direct
application of the learned skills within the context of real architectural practice.
