1. Kuna and Reddy Precast India ltd is concerned about its waste in production line for small
precast slabs which are used on railway station and other public places. They sampled their product
waste and record from the past month with the following results:
Number of slabs Discarded During a Shift

2 16 4 12 19 29 24 7 19

22 14 8 24 31 18 20 16 6
Construct a frequency distribution for these data and a relative frequency distribution. Use intervals
of 5 slabs.
(a) One of Kuna and Reddy Precast Indias goals is for at least 75 percent of shifts to have no
more than 16 slabs wasted. Can you determine from the frequency distribution whether this goal
has been achieved?
(b) What percentage of shifts have waste of 21 or fewer precast slabs? Which distribution did you
use to determine your answer?

2. At Dubai Wall Construction LLC, the time required to set up a foam work for one floor of same
size was recorded for 50 times.

(b) Construct a frequency distribution and a less-than cumulative frequency distribution from
the data, using intervals of 0.8 minute.
(c) Construct a frequency polygon from the data.
(d) Construct a less-than ogive from the data.
(e) From your ogive, estimate what percentage of the time the front page can be set in less than
24 minutes.
3. The Nelson Window Company has manufacturing plants in five U.S. cities: Orlando, Minneapolis,
Dallas, Pittsburgh, and Seattle. The production forecast for the next year has been completed. The
Orlando division, with yearly production of 72 million windows, is predicting an 11.5 percent
increase. The Pittsburgh division, with yearly production of 62 million, should grow by 6.4 percent.
The Seattle division, with yearly production of 48 million, should also grow by 6.4 percent. The
Minneapolis and Dallas divisions, with yearly productions of 89 and 94 million windows,
respectively, are expecting to decrease production in the coming year by 9.7 and 18.2 percent,
respectively. What is the average rate of change in production for the Nelson Window Company
for the next year?

4. Pravarthi Building Contracting LLC provides information to its subscribers to enable them to
evaluate the performance of their share market equity. A recent survey of funds produced the
following data on total annual rate of return over the past five years:
Annual return 11.0 12.0 13.0 14.0 15.0 16.0 17,0 18.0
(%) 11.9 12.9 13.9 14.9 15.9 16.9 17.9 18.9
Frequency 2000 2000 8000 10000 11000 8000 3000 1000

(a) Calculate the mean, variance, and standard deviation of the annual rate of return for this sample
of 45000 accounts

(b) According to Chebyshevs theorem, between what values should at least 75 percent of the
sample observations fall? What percentage of the observations actually do fall in that interval?

(c) Because the distribution is roughly bell-shaped, between what values would you expect to find
68 percent of the observations? What percentage of the observations actually do fall in that interval?

5. Jabel Ali cement Factory sells three grades of the cement, distinguished according to the strength
of one cubic centimeter of the block. The state cement testing laboratory has a sample of each grade
of the cement and its test results for the number of cubic block successful out of packages of 100
are as follows:
Grade I (Regular) 88 91 92 89 79
Grade II (Extra) 87 92 88 90 92
Grade III (Super) 90 89 79 93 88

Does Jabel Ali cement Factorys cement grading make sense?

6. The site engineer of a major construction tools & equipment manufacturing company has been
trying to convince the top management to improve the working conditions on the shop floor. He is
convinced that the noise level when the presses machines are running creates unhealthy levels of
tension and anxiety. He recently had a psychologist conduct a test during which press operators
were placed in rooms with varying levels of noise and then given a test to measure mood and
anxiety levels. The following table shows the index of their degree of arousal or nervousness and
the level of noise to which they were exposed (1.0 is low and 10.0 is high).

Noise level 4 3 1 2 6 7 2 3

Degree of arousal 39 38 16 18 41 45 25 38
(a) Plot these data.
(b) Develop an estimating equation that describes these data.
(c) Predict the degree of arousal we might expect when the noise level is 5

7. Al Ghurair Construction - a leading construction company in Dubai, has been significantly involved
in studying the effect of its latest efforts in training for its engineer. Individual chosen at random
were called to response the questionnaire and their learning were scaled out of twenty marks. They
had given a feedback of very good training experience however their learning score are reflected
as below:

X ( Number of days of 3 7 4 2 3 4 1 2
training)

Y ( Score by Engineers ) 11 18 9 4 7 6 3 8

(a) Develop the estimating equation that best fits the data
(b) Calculate the sample coefficient of determination and the sample coefficient of correlation,
Comment on the relationship of their learning score and number of days of training

8. Ms. Jennifer, a Construction site manager, is interested in determining the Load capacity of simply
supported concrete slabs w.r.t its thickness and self-weight. Following data have been observed
with an experiment. With the help of experimented data please answer these queries

Total load ( kN/m2) 45 50 40 53 30 30 68 55 59 45

Thickness (cm) 14 16 17 18 11 15 23 24 14 17

Self-weight ( 10 * Kg/m2) 20 25 24 24 20 29 34 30 23 27

a. Figure out the regression equation which can help the manager to predict the total load bearing
capacity
b. Find out the standard Error Se, Intercept Error Sa and Slope Std. Error Sb1 & Sb2 and comment upon
the fitness of the regression model and strength of relationship it shows
c. Predict the slab load capacity for 32 cm thickness and 350 kg/m2 self-weight of slab and comment
upon the significance of this regression model

9. Rick Blackburn is thinking about selling his house. In order to decide what price to ask, he has
collected data for 12 recent closings. He has recorded sales price (in $l,000s), the number of square
feet in the house (in 100s of sq ft.), the number of stories, the number of bathrooms, and the age of
the house (in years).
