10th World History

Objective: Students will evaluate ways in which globalization is necessary and helpful, and ways in
which it may be harmful to local economies and cultures by creating advocacy projects. Students
choose between creating awareness blogs, OC Register submissions, or presentations to Rep. Royce.

Directions: Go to/click on the links, read/watch and then answer the questions in the box
following that link. All of the links are building toward a culminating project, so be mindful of
that as you proceed. Have fun!

Children From Around the World with Their Most Prized Possessions
What are the countries represented? Are there any you hadnt heard of before?

What do you notice about the amount and types of toys from the different countries?

Which childs toys looks most similar to your own? Does that surprise you?

Where Children Sleep: A Round-the-World Tour of Bedrooms

Which bed/room strikes you the most in this article? Draw it and explain why.

Draw your own bed/room. Compare and contrast the bed/room you chose from the article to
your own.

One definition of GLOBALIZATION: The world is becoming increasingly interconnected through
economic, political, and cultural change.

Globalization
From the list below, circle those which are examples/products of globalization?

Coca-Cola TV Quinoa Your pillow case

Dubai Airlines Skateboards McDonalds Skype

iPhones NAFTA BBC HOCO dress

What stuck out to you as the most positive aspect of globalization? Why?

What stuck out to you as the most negative aspect of globalization? Why?

Lets think about one product: The iPhone.

(There are 7.5 Billion people on the planet and there have been 800-850 Million iPhones sold
to date. That is almost 1 Billion iPhones!)
If you had to guess (and you do), where would you say the iPhone is made? _______________

Where is the iPhone Made?

Where are iPhones manufactured?

Where are iPhones assembled?

What are your reactions?

WATCH: Crash Course: Globalization - Trade and Poverty
Now that we know where Apple manufactures and assembles their products,
what do you think the impact might be on:

a) The seller (Apple), as opposed to manufacturing and assembling in the U.S.? (Think: What is
the incentive for a company to outsource any aspect of their business to another country?)

b) The buyer? (Think: Is the buyer of the iPhone getting is cheaper because Apple has
outsourced their manufacturing and assemblage to these countries?)

c) The economy where the manufacturing and assembling is taking place? (Think: What does
it do for the local economy when more money is circulating?)

d) The local people who are doing the manufacturing and assembling? (Think: The creation of
new jobs but also the treatments of workers? Are there laws protecting workers? How much
are they getting paid? What are the trade-offs?)

Globalization through technology, communication systems, corporations, international treaties, and
more have made us more interconnected than ever. This has some positive effects and some negative
effects. In order to hit this point home one more time. Look at this last article with photos from
classrooms around the world to see the similarities and differences between us:

Classrooms Around the World

It is not hard to see, even from these photos, some disparities (differences, inequalities) that exist.

Think: What would YOU be willing to give up? Would you sacrifice cheaper clothes for better
treatment of workers in another country? Would you boycott a company if you found out they
were outsourcing to a company or government in another country that was mistreating their
workers? If you knew that employees were being hurtor committing suicidebecause working
conditions were that bad, would you say or do anything? What if you looked on an exploitation
list and found a company that you shop from on there? What would you do?

Here is an article that came out in 2016 entitled 10 Companies That Still Use Child Labor.
Of course, there are always two sides to every story, and we must fact check. For the purpose of this
assignment, lets assume this is true (and still true) of these companies. Notice the iPhone is on
the list! Choose either the iPhone or another company and pick one of the following:

1. Create an awareness blog post on our History is Fun! class

blog, educating the public about exploitation, child labor,
and/or forced labor.

2. Write a piece for submission to the Orange County Register.

3. Create a presentation that you would present (if given the opportunity) to
your United States Representative. Representative Royce happens to be
the Chair of Committee on Foreign Affairs which handles issues of
international human trafficking and exploitation.

*All of the pieces must include at least one image and be a minimum of 300 words.
Your projects will be presented to parents at Open House.

Directions:
1. Give details: The who (company), where (which countries are they in), what, why (why
are you outraged, calling for action, etc.), etc.
2. You must analyze the implications of how this companys presence in the country it is in
might be benefitting the local economy and people. Juxtapose that with how its presence
might be hurting the local people.
3. What changes would you suggest in order to bring justice, if any is required.
4. What action are you calling your friends, Americans, your Representative, etc. to take?
Be specific.
