After you complete this learning object, you should be able to:
Define the Avaya Aura solution.
Business Challenges

Notes

Businesses, regardless of size, industry, or location, are striving to maximize their communications. Yesterdays dedicated telepho-
ny system is no longer cost effective. Customers are looking to turn the single-purpose system into a solution that enables them
to deliver all kinds of communication applications (voice, video, screen sharing, conferencing, and messaging) with one integrated
infrastructure over a wide variety of networks.

Many IT organizations are not sure how to go about moving from their old systems to a new one. Not only is cost a factor, but the
risks associated with changeboth for IT and the userare high. In addition, users are demanding the ability to use multiple devices
running on different operating systems for both mobile and desktop purposes. Users want to bring into the enterprise capabilities
that they enjoy personally, such as click-to-video or social networking.

IT must support these demands while securing the environment and protecting the personal data of employees and customers.
Avaya Aura Key Capabilities

Notes

Avaya Aura is considered one of the most unique and valuable solutions in the communications industry because it enables these key capa-
bilities:

It provides flexibility and choice by transforming traditional, single-purpose solutions for voice, video, e-mail and instant messaging into a true
multimedia, multimodal architecture. Avaya Aura Also provides connectivity to any SIP-enabled system.

The Single SIP/session-based infrastructure provides an architecture and platform that allows for:
A high degree of flexibility,
Strong centralized control,
The ability to support the delivery of communication services from business applications, and
The ability to create business workflows that include the automated, dynamic delivery of communication services.

Centralized core services, provide a heterogeneous UC environment that:

Reduces multi-vendor integration complexity, and
Decreases centralized server and networking costs, and administration and management costs.

The centralization of applications and services reduces the total cost of ownership.
Avaya Aura is an Architecture

Notes

As we will discuss in this learning object, Avaya Aura can be defined several ways:
Avaya Aura is an architecture
Avaya Aura is a suite of communication services
Avaya Aura is a set of applications

Here we discuss Avaya Aura as an architecture:

Avaya Aura is the name that Avaya has given to the communications architecture that is specifically designed to offer the flexibility
required by business while providing the resilience, security, and scalability required by IT.

This architecture is defined by three layers or tiers all connected using the industry-standard SIP protocol.

The tiers separate the communications service connections that are needed by applications and the delivery of those services
across networks to the devices or applications that access them.
Think of access as people using phones or PCs or tablets or a Web application.
Think of connections as setting up and executing a video call or a screen share.
Think of apps as any application that wants to use the communication servicessuch as a conferencing or a recording ap-
plication.
Provides User Flexibility and Choice

Notes

The Avaya Aura communications architecture provides user flexibility and choice.

The architecture and platform allow for:

A high degree of flexibility
Strong centralized control
The ability to support the delivery of communication services from business applications and
The ability to create business workflows that include the automated, dynamic delivery of communication services.
Avaya Aura is a Suite of Communication Services

Notes

We will cover these communication services in more detail later on.

Avaya Aura is more than an architecture. Avaya Aura is also a suite of communication services.

Avaya Aura provides all of the core services required to deliver a robust collaboration experience through a variety of modes and
devices. For example, session management is provided by Avaya Aura Session Manager. Many of the core services are grouped
together, as we will see on the next slide.

For now, we want to make the point that communications services are at the center of the architecture and deliver the key capabil-
ities needed by telephony, video, IM, and conferencing applications. These conferencing applications are designed to set up and
deliver voice, video, and Instant Messaging (IM) communications to individuals or groups of people.

In addition, these services are accessed by other applications and can be sequenced into business workflows or used by the feder-
ation service to enable other third-party applications to share these services.
Avaya Aura Solution Components

Notes

Avaya Aura core communication services includes these software applications:

Session Manager
Communication Manager
Presence Services
Application Enablement Services, and
System Manager.

The types of services provided by each application are listed here. The important thing to remember is that all these communica-
tion services work together, and any application named Avaya Aura takes advantage of these services.

For example: Avaya Aura System Manager provides administration and management for all applications that start with the name
Avaya Aura. It also means that they conform to the three-layer architecture that enables them to be centralized but used by any
application in the distributed environment.

These communication services and applications are delivered is through a virtualization platform called System Platform. Avaya
Session Border Controller for Enterprise secures the real-time communications that flow beyond the borders of you internal net-
work.
Core Components of Avaya Aura

Notes

Session Manager is the center of a hub-and-spoke design, with other PBXs and adjuncts (such as voice mail system) and SIP
phones as the spokes. SIP phones can register directly to Session Manager. PBXs such as CM will become known as feature
servers to Session Manager. The other PBXs can come from any other vendor (for example, Cisco, Microsoft, or Genesys). Ses-
sion Manager communicates only in SIP, although it understands a few dialects of SIP. It communicates to PBXs and adjuncts only
over SIP trunks, and to SIP endpoints directly (analog and digital phones will still attach to their native PBX). Session Manager
Replaces the SIP Enablement Server (SES).

Presence Server, collects and disseminates presence information between Avaya and other third-party endpoints. Presence infor-
mation indicates a users availability such as Available, Busy, Away, Do Not Disturb, or On a call.

System Manager is a browser-based console that provides one place for administering and managing multiple instances of Avaya
Aura applications. It provides a single management interface that makes administering and programming all Avaya devices similar
to each other. It also provides a single database of users needed by any and all of the Avaya products.

Communication Manager provides the basic foundation of features needed by many Avaya devices.

Application Enablement Services, provides third-party adjuncts with the ability to control how CM behaves. For example, a telemar-
keting adjunct can use AES to have CM initiate phone calls, and then connect the call to an ACD agent.

The Utility Server is a collection of tools to help analyze, configure, optimize, and maintain the Avaya applications that reside on a
single server.
Avaya Aura Solution for Midsize Enterprise

Notes

Midsize enterprises can also leverage the power of Avaya Aura and gain the same benefits of faster problem resolution, better
customer responsiveness and enhanced business collaboration with an Avaya solution created specifically for enterprises with 250
to 2,400 users. The Avaya Aura Solution for Midsize Enterprise combines the solutions into a single server solution tailored to the
midmarket customer.

Using the virtualization capabilities of System Platform, the single server hardware footprint makes this solution simpler to install,
support, administer, and manage while still offering all the benefits and application possibilities of Avaya Aura.
Avaya Aura Virtual Environment
Avaya Aura core applications take a major step forward in the deployment of real time collaboration with the integration of VMware
virtualized server architecture.

Notes

Traditionally, Avaya Aura has been deployed using an appliance model, on servers tested, configured and provided by Avaya. The
Avaya Aura Virtualized Environment or Avaya Aura VE, offers an exciting, new deployment option. Customers can now adopt the
latest release of Avaya Aura using their own VMware infrastructure. For existing customers who wish to add capacity, VMware per-
mits the flexible expansion of applications like Avaya Aura Communication Manager or Application Enablement Services.
