Tutorial 1 INELASTIC BENDING AND TORSION

[ Take E = 200 GPa, = 0.3, y = 250 MPa]

1. The beam shown in Fig. 1 is made of an elastic-plastic material for which y = 250 MPa.
(a) Determine the residual stress in the beam at the top and bottom fibres after a fully plastic moment M p
is applied and then released.
Ans: 43.5 MPa
(b) Determine the locations at which there is no residual stress and plot the residual stress distribution.
Ans: y = 98.0 mm

2. (a) Determine the "shape factor" for an elastic-perfectly plastic beam of circular cross-section under pure
bending.
Ans: (a) 1.7
(b) Determine and plot the moment-curvature relationship for an elastic-perfectly plastic beam of
rectangular cross section under bending.

3. An I-section beam has flanges which are 150 mm wide and 25 mm thick. The total "height" of the section
is 200 mm, and the thickness of the web is also 25 mm. The beam is loaded in pure bending in the plane
of the web until the whole of both flanges only has yielded. Assuming ideal plastic behaviour, calculate the
residual curvature of the beam when the load is released.
Ans: 0.0022 m-1

4. A T-section beam as shown in Fig. 2 is made of an alloy that approximates to an elastic-perfectly plastic
material. Its yield stress both in tension and compression is 250 MPa and its Young's modulus is 200
GPa. The beam is loaded under bending until the top flange has completely yielded, (a) calculate the
applied bending moment; (b) what will be the residual stress distribution after the load is removed?
Ans: (a) 63.0 kNm,Top fibres -5.7 MPa, Bottom fibre -178.2 MPa

5 A 55 mm diameter rod of an elastic-perfectly plastic material is 2500 mm long. If the twist of one end
relative to the other is 20 , what torque was applied to cause this rotation? Assume yield shearing stress
is 100 MPa which first occurs at a (yield) shearing strain of 0.0015. Show the residual stress distribution in
the rod after unloading.
Ans: 4290 Nm; 31.3 MPa & 48.73 MPa at r=27.5 & 10.74 mm

6 The fixed-ended shaft shown in Fig. 3 is made of an elastoplastic material for which G = 80 GPa, and its
yield shearing stress is 240 MPa. Assuming that the angle of twist at step C is 0.2 rad., calculate the
magnitude of the applied torque T.
Ans: 71.58 kNm

7 A solid shaft of diameter 40 mm and length 1 m is made from a material having a yielding shear stress of
100 MPa. Determine the first yield torque Ty and the corresponding angle of twist. What is the angle of
twist if the torque is increased to 1.2 Ty? G = 80 GPa.
0 0
Ans: 1.26 kNm, 3.58 , 4.86
