A flat furnace wall is constructed of a 4.5 in layer of Sil-o-

cel brick, with a thermal conductivity of 0.08 Btu/ft-h-0F
back by a 9-in layer of common brick, of conductivity
0.8 Btu/ft-h-0F. The temperature of the inner face of the
wall is 1400 0F and that of the outer face is 170 0F. (a)
What is the heat loss through the wall? (b) What is the
temperature of the interface between the refractory
brick and the common brick? (c) Supposing that the
contact between the two brick layers is poor and that a
contact resistance of 0.50 0F-h-ft2/BTU is present,
what would be the heat loss?

Heat Conduction Through Concentric Cylinders
A tube of 60-mm (2.36-in.) outer diameter is
insulated with a 50-mm (1.97-in.) layer of silica foam,
for which k = 0.032 Btu/hr-ft-F, followed by a 40-mm
(1.57-in.) layer of cork with k = 0.03 Btu/hr/ft/F. If
the temperature of the outer surface of the pipe is
150C, and the temperature of the outer surface of
the cork is 30C, calculate the heat loss in Btu/ft-h.
What is the temperature at the interface between
the silica and the cork?

Seatwork
A thick wall tube of stainless steel having k =
21.63 W/mK with dimensions of 0.0254 m ID and
0.0508 m OD, covered with 0.0254 m layer of
asbestos with a k = 0.2423 W/mK. The inside wall
temperature of the pipe is 811K and the outside
surface of the insulation is at 310.8K for a 0.305
m length of pipe. Calculate the heat loss and also
the temperature at the interface between the
metal and insulation.
