Self-Employed Architects- normally organize and keep their own profession practices. They are
most often alone and in most cases, work in a specific field with certain skills.
Project Architects- make most of the design decisions and coordinate consultant activities.
Almost always are they workings with the client or contractor on the delivery of the project.
Education Requirement
Most states require architects to have a degree from a National Architectural Accrediting Board
school.
Most architects receive a five-year bachelors degree and three additional years of experience
before taking their licensing exam.

American Architectural Foundation- Nonprofit organization that helps the community
understand the architectural process.
American Institution of Architects- group of online services designed specifically for architects.

Civil Engineer- deals with the design, construction, and maintenance for the physical and natural
environment
Transportation Engineer- handles design, construction, and maintenance of railroads, airports,
harbors, sea ports, and highways
Geotechnical Engineer- deals with engineering of earth materials and use principals of soil and
rock mechanics.
Structural Engineer- make sure buildings can stand, help with the projects and take into account
the structural integrity of the building before breaking ground.
Constructional Engineer- cross between architect and civil engineer and deal more with building
than engineering and designing the structure.
Education Requirements
Must have at least a 4 year bachelors degree
Most have a degree in civil engineering which includes classes in math, design, physics, and
engineering.
Professional Organizations
ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineering)- founded in 1852 and represents about 140,00 civil
engineers. It is the oldest civil engineering society in the country.
EERI (Earthquake Engineering Research Institute)- researchers, professionals, teachers, building
code regulators, and government officials who work to build buildings that can sustain
earthquakes.

Aerospace industry- researches, designs, manufactures, operates and maintains aircraft.
Automotive industry- designs, manufactures, distributes and markets motor vehicles.
Chemical industry- covers oil companies, chemicals, manufacturers, and the business that
support them.
Education Requirements
Requires at least a bachelors degree which provides instruction in various system components
and cover technical subjects.
Professional Organizations
American Association for Wind Engineering- considers problems related to wind and associated
water loads and penetration for buildings and structures.
American Concrete Institution- involved in concrete design, construction, and materials.
Association of Energy Engineers- mission is to promote the scientific and educational interests of
those engaged in the energy industry and to foster action for sustainable development.
