Tiffin School Admissions Arrangements

for entry in the Academic Year 2014-15

1. Admission into Year 7 in September 2014

1.1 Admission Criteria

Selection for admission to the School is by ability as measured solely by reference to
performance in the entrance tests. Applicants will be ranked on their scores in the
entrance tests and places will be offered to the highest-performing boys, who have
also requested a place at Tiffin School by naming the School on their Common
Application Form (CAF).

The planned admission number (PAN) for year 7 is 150.

1.2 Testing
The entrance tests are made up of a verbal reasoning test paper and a non-verbal
reasoning test paper. Each paper consists of 80 questions and takes 50 minutes.

The tests are prepared and the results standardised, exclusively for the Tiffin Schools,
by GL Assessment (formerly the National Foundation for Education Research (NFER))

The tests differ from any tests which are publicly available to parents. Past test papers
are similarly not available; however practice papers are produced by GL Assessment
and are widely available at stationers. The tests are not based on any primary school
curriculum, but do contain familiarisation elements which are not marked.

The results of the tests are not comparable to those for other schools entrance tests.

1.3 Method of offering places

The aggregate standardised scores for all candidates who have sat the tests and
named Tiffin School on their Common Application Form are ranked and submitted to
Kingston LA.

Kingston LA will exchange information with other local authorities to identify the single
highest offer available for each eligible applicant.

Offers are made until 150 places have been filled. In the event of a tied score to fill 150
places, applicants on the tied score will be ranked in order of their distance from
school, and the closest applicant offered until the roll reaches 150. The distance will be
the shortest straight line distance from home to the nearest pedestrian entrance of
Tiffin School.

The distance criteria will be administered by Kingston Schools Admissions using their
distance definitions and their computerised Geographical Information System.

The results of the Tiffin tests will be sent to parents prior to the closing date of the
Common Application Form which is 31 October 2013.

The 150 places for Tiffin School will be offered on 1 March 2014 (i.e. letters will be
posted on 1 March 2014). Letters offering a school place will come from your home
local authority. In all cases parents have two weeks to accept an offer.

1.4 Age
Applications for entry to the School in September 2014 will normally be from parents of
boys born between 1 September 2002 and 31 August 2003 inclusive. Applications for
boys outside that age group will be considered according to the individual
circumstances of the case; these parents should write to the Admissions Department
at Tiffin School before registering their son for tests. Boys are only eligible to be tested
once for entrance into Year 7.

1.5 Children with a Statement of Special Educational Needs

There is a separate process for transition to secondary school for children with a
statement of special educational needs. Please contact your SEN case worker or local
authority for further information. Any boy with a statement of special educational needs
who meets the admission criteria will be admitted first.

1.6 Registration Process for the Tests

The first step is to register your son to take the tests. You do this by completing the
Tiffin School Supplementary Information Form on line. This form will be open from 15
April 2013 until Tuesday 10 September 2013. Further details regarding this form are in
Appendix A.

You will be sent detailed information regarding the arrangements for the tests a week
prior to the test date. The results of the tests will be sent to you in time for you to
decide if you wish to apply for a place at Tiffin School. If you do, you must complete
and return your Common Application Form to your home local authority and include
Tiffin School as one of your preferences.

1.7 Late Registration for the Tests

If you miss the deadline for registering for the tests you should write to the
Admissions Department of Tiffin School explaining the circumstances of why the
deadline was missed.

1.8 Waiting list for entry into Year 7 between September 2014 and July 2015
From 1 March 2014, the waiting list will automatically consist of boys, in ranked score
order, who have not had a higher preference school offered to them. Boys who have
been offered a higher preference school will not be included unless parents request it
(in which case they will be added to the waiting list in rank score order). The request
must be put in writing to the Admissions Department at Tiffin School.

The waiting list will be maintained from 1 March 2014 until the end of the Schools
published summer term for the academic year September 2014 to July 2015. During
this period, if the planned admission number falls below 150, offer(s) will be made to
the boy(s) at the top of the waiting list. After this date, there will no longer be a list.
Those who have not achieved the qualifying score (i.e. the lowest score offered a
place in that cohort) and therefore have not been offered a place by that date will not
be considered for a place in Years 8 to 11 at any future time.

1.9 Appeals
Parents of boys who are not offered a place may appeal. Details of how to appeal and
a timetable for appeals will be on the School website from 28 February each year.

2. Casual Admission into Years 7 to 11 after the start of term in September 2014

2.1 From September 2014 onwards, any application for a school place for Year 7 to 11
should be made directly to the School. In addition, a Common Application Form must
be completed and returned to your home LA. This form may be downloaded from their
website.
Only when there is a vacancy in the relevant year group will all applicants be invited to
attend for testing. For Year 7 the tests will consist of a verbal and nonverbal reasoning
test.
For Years 8 to 11 they will be English and Maths tests.
Tiffin School will notify the applicants parents and Kingston LA of the outcome of the
application.

2.2 Children with a Statement of Special Educational Needs

If your son has a statement of special educational needs, please contact your SEN
case worker or local authority for further information regarding changing schools during
years 7 to 11.

3. Admission to Year 12 in September 2014

3.1 Admission Criteria:

The student must achieve at least 4 A grades and 2 B grades at GCSE including
English Language and Mathematics. He must have a grade A, or A* in three of the
subjects he wishes to study in the Sixth Form and at least a grade B in the fourth.
If the student wishes to pursue any of the courses listed in section 3.5 he must also
meet their specific requirements.
Students must be 16 on 31 August 2014. Applications for boys outside that age
group will be considered according to the individual circumstances of the case;
these parents should write to the Admissions Department at Tiffin School.

3.2 All boys in the current Tiffin Year 11 who meet the admission criteria will have priority
for Sixth Form places. A minimum of 40 places will be filled by external applicants to
the Sixth Form; final numbers will vary depending on combination of courses and
availability of spaces.

3.3 Application Process for External Applicants

To apply, the applicant should download and complete the application form from our
website. Students are entitled to apply in their own right.
All application forms must be completed and returned by 20 December 2013. A
copy of the students end of Year 10 and most recent school report must be
included with the form, for the application to be accepted. Competition for places is
strong, and late applications might not be considered.
Based on the evidence available from the application form, report, information from
the current school and predicted grades, applicants who are considered most likely
to best satisfy the admission criteria will be invited for a meeting to discuss subject
options, and may subsequently be made an offer of a place at the School. Meetings
normally take place in the Spring term, and it is expected that a parent/guardian will
attend this meeting with the prospective student.

A reserve list will also be kept in case the number of successful candidates after
GCSE results falls below the number we aim to admit.

3.4 Oversubscription criteria for external candidates:

A candidate who is a Looked After Child (i.e. a child who is looked after by a public
authority and is in public care) or a previously looked after child who was adopted,
or subject to a residence order, or special guardianship order immediately following
having been looked after, and who has met the entrance criteria, will be offered a
place before other candidates. Applications made under this criterion must be
accompanied by details of circumstance and professionally supported evidence
(e.g. from a social worker).

For all other candidates, places will be offered depending on the following criteria:

Assessment of predicted GCSE grades, other appropriate grades and information

based on professional judgement of staff at Tiffin School and the professional
judgement of staff at the candidates current school, to determine which applicants
are most likely to best satisfy the admission criteria.
The demand for places in each of the 4 subject areas the candidate chooses to
study.
Staffing constraints in A level subjects at Tiffin School.

3.5 Special Course Requirements:

For all foreign languages, and mathematics, at least a grade A in the relevant
GCSE is required.
For all sciences, at least grade A in the relevant science, or grade A in Additional
Science, is required.
For students wishing to study all three sciences, having followed a Science and
Additional Science Course, grade A* will be required in Additional Science.
For Further Mathematics, a minimum of a grade A* at GCSE mathematics is
required, as well as evidence of success beyond GCSE. Evidence of success would
normally be a higher level maths course, eg GCSE Additional Maths, AS C1,
IGCSE Further Maths. If your school does not offer one of these courses, please
contact us for further advice.

3.6 Children with a Statement of Special Educational Needs

Please contact your SEN case worker or local authority for further information
regarding the transition to sixth form.

3.7 Appeals
Parents and students are able to appeal jointly or separately against a decision
refusing a student admission and, where they appeal separately, the appeals will be
heard together.
