3.1.4 Interview
In the interview, all agreed that they experienced pedestrian traffic. They have
not noticed any changes in pedestrian conditions during their stay in Saint Louis
University. According to their experiences, the most common problem that was
caused by pedestrians were their slow walking pace and groups of people
loitering along the roads. We conclude according to the interview that SLU is
indeed overpopulated even if k-12 is currently implemented and in the future,
SLUs condition will worsen as they accommodate more students from the k-12
program.
All of them stated that traveling around the campus is hazardous because of the
pedestrian and vehicular circulation layout in SLU is not separated even if there is
a speed limit. One interviewee even had an experience of getting bumped by a
taxi on the way to his class. Aside from human and vehicular obstructions some
specified other factors affecting their pedestrian experience. This include
weather, ongoing constructions, unclear way finding, and various things
impeding the pathways such as posts, trash bins, etc.
All said that they have classes from different buildings. The SEA interviewees utilizes
Otto Hann, Silang, Mount Mary, and HD. The SON interviewee travels from Silang
to Adenauer. STELA interviewee uses Perfecto building and DH or PE building and
the SNS interviewee uses Rizal and Silang buildings. The gates they pass through
as they enter and exit the university was mostly Main gate, followed by gate 5,
gate 6 and gate 4.
We conclude from the interview that creating a skywalk in SLU will greatly aid in
reducing the problems concerning pedestrian traffic though some stated
negative effects in its implementation such as during construction phase and, in
the long run, the skywalks being congested with students as well. Most of them
agreed to have the skywalk same as SLUs Bauhaus style but some disagreed
because according to them SLUs architectural style is old and seem to be unsafe.
They agreed in adapting green architecture in the creation of the skywalks
accepting minor changes to the style it opted to have. See Appendix X for

YES NO
75% of the total respondents experienced delay in their travel time due to the
pedestrian traffic inside the SLU main campus. The most significant reason of their
delay is the difficulty in walking through crowded area and the least reason is that the
person ahead of them is walking slowly because he/she is carrying heavy loads. Base
from the observation of the researchers, overcrowding are mostly caused by limited
space of an area and lounging students along the hallway. In conclusion, there is a
need for a lounging area where students can stay instead at the hallways.

Based from the survey conducted, majority of the respondents are in their third and fourth year in SLU main campus
due to the K-12 implementation. The researchers correlates the truth validity of the respondents answer in the
questions Have you ever experienced being delayed in your travel due to pedestrian traffic inside SLU main? & Do
you believe that SLU main campus has ever been overpopulated?
to the number of years they have been staying in SLU main already. The researchers as primary observers and as
students themselves who have been in SLU for atleast 4 & years agreed that they have indeed experienced
overpopulation and delay in travel due to pedestrian traffic in SLU. The researchers implied that the No percentage
came from the younger student levels today. The lower year levels today may have not experienced the same
overpopulation that existed before due to SLUs adaption of K-12 program.

76% of the respondents agreed that SLU main campus is overpopulated, and 79% of them
believe that over population is indeed one of the factor why theres a pedestrian traffic
inside the campus. SLU made a calendar shift a few years ago in order to adapt to the
k-12 program. The program had resulted to the significant decrease of faculties and
students. Currently, there are no regular first to 2nd years undergraduate students which is
one of the reason for the decrease of the SLUs population today.
Graph #: Top 5 Effects of Having the Same Road Access of Vehicles and
Pedestrians
In SLU main, how does having the same access of road with vehicles while walking affect
you as a student or employee?
RANKING REASONS MEAN RANKS
R1 It delays my travel time. 2.73

R3 It limits my comfort in walking. 2.96
It compromises my safety & convenience while
R4 3.15
walking.
It negatively affects my health because of air &
R5 3.26
noise pollution.
Vehicles and pedestrian have the same road access in SLU main campus. This greatly
affects the pedestrians travel time inside the campus resulting the delayed in their
designation. The air and noise pollution is their least concern in this circumstance. In
conclusion, a separation of vehicular and pedestrian access is needed.

mainly because of obstructions such as posts signage, road elements, and trash bins.
Some also considered parking as their obstruction in walking and some said that
students in general are the obstruction itself.
Objective 2: To identify the role of skywalks in a university setting.

Based from the survey conducted, protection from external weathers while
travelling from building to building was ranked 1 as the respondents theoretical
