This operation manual is intended for operating, maintenance and supervisory person-
nel.
This operation manual also describes components, equipment and ancillary units which
are not or only partially included in the scope of supply.
The scope of supply always refers to the Delivery Specication in accordance with chap-
ter 3, Technical Specications.
The Operation Manual must be read, understood and complied with by the operating
personnel. We wish to emphasize that we do not accept any liability for damage and/or
downtime due to non-compliance with the operation manual.
We reserve the right to make any technical changes to representations and data given
in this operation manual that may become necessary to improve the machine/plant.
All information given in this Operation Manual shall take precedence over information
given in the Operation Manuals from subsuppliers (listed in Chap. 9.2 Documentation
from subsuppliers).

2 Safety
2.1 Fundamental safety instructions

2.1.1 Principle
The machine/plant has been built in accordance with state-of-the-art standards and the
recognized safety rules. When the machine/plant is used, the user or third parties may
be endangered and/or damage to the machine/plant and to other material assets may
be caused.
Use the machine/plant only in technically perfect condition in accordance with its des-
ignated use by adhering to the safety regulations and being aware of the risks involved
in operating it. Observe the Operation Manual. Eliminate any malfunctions which may
affect safety immediately or have them eliminated immediately.

2.1.2 Organizational measures


Always keep the Operation Manual at hand at the place of use of the machine/plant.
Observe the applicable legal and other mandatory regulations on accident prevention
and environmental protection and instruct the users/operators in them. These obliga-
tions also concern the handling of hazardous substances or the issuing and wearing of
personal protective equipment.

Spare parts must comply with the technical requirements specied by the manufacturer.
Spare parts from original equipment manufacturers can be relied on to do so. Do not
modify programs of PLCs (programmable logic controllers) without prior consultation with
the manufacturer.
Replace hydraulic and pneumatic hose lines within specied or reasonable intervals even
if no safety-relevant defects are detected.
Adhere to the stipulated intervals or those specied in the Operation Manual for routine
checks/inspections. For the performance of maintenance work, workshop equipment
adapted to the task on hand is indispensable.
Mark the location of re extinguishers. Regularly instruct the personnel in the handling
of the re alarm equipment. Regularly instruct the personnel in the handling of the re
ghting devices.
Pay attention to the possibilities for re alarm and re ghting.

2.1.3 Selection and qualication of personnel Basic responsibilities

2.2.2 What to do in an emergency


In an emergency or in the event of acute danger, press the emergency-stop switch/button
and thus shut down the machine/plant.
Emergency-stop switches/buttons are usually located on the operating consoles and
within arm's reach of the operating consoles.
They are clearly marked: red mushroom head, with yellow background. In the event of
impending danger, anyone could trigger an emergency stop of the machine/plant.
Everyone working on the machine/plant must be briefed about the functioning and the
location of the individual emergency stop buttons.
Check all emergency stop buttons for correct functioning at regular intervals. Observe

2.2.12.3 Safety training


The personnel working on the machine/plant may be endangered during operation of
the machine/plant. The exposure of the personnel to danger can be minimized by cor-
rect behavior. Therefore, instruct and train the personnel working on the machine/plant
properly and repeatedly. This can highly reduce the risk of accidents and injury.

2.2.13 Safety measures taken by the operator


The operator must also make sure that only authorized persons work on the machine/-
plant. S/he is responsible in her/his working area vis--vis third parties.

2.2.13.1 Readiness for starting


Check prior to starting the machine/plant whether the required safety guards are installed
and effective. If the required safety guards are not installed or ineffective, do not start
the machine/plant.
Put the safety guards taken off for set-up and maintenance work back in their customary
positions after completion of this work.

2.2.13.2 Starting
When starting the machine/plant or a machine group, take care that no one is endan-
gered. Make sure that the members of the machine crew are well away from the danger
zones prior to the starting of the machine/plant.
Check danger zones.
When the machine/plant is put into operation, no personnel must be in the area of the
machine/plant any longer. Warn the personnel before the machine/plant is put into op-
eration. Set off the warning signal for starting in order to warn the personnel.
The warning signal for starting (= acoustic signal) must sound for 5 seconds. After a
waiting period of 15 seconds, the machine/plant can be put into operation within the
following 30 seconds. Then the readiness for operation is canceled again.

2.2.13.3 Crawl speed


When the machine/plant is at a standstill, certain work cannot be carried out. This work
must be carried out at crawl speed in inching mode.
The following work can only be carried out at crawl speed in inching mode:

In inching mode all other command units for starting must be switched off. Changeover

Take care when spraying down the running machine/plant with a hose. The hose may
very rapidly get caught up by the rolls. Persons may be pulled into the machine/plant.
The machine/plant may be damaged.
Every inrunning nip/wrapping point is a danger zone. No parts of the body or items of
clothing must come into contact with inrunning nip/wrapping points in order to prevent
them from being drawn in. Do not wear any loose clothing which could get caught up in
the roll nip/roll-entry point.
Never put your hand between safety guards and rotating machine parts or climb in be-
tween them.
Do not touch rotating shafts and spindles. Items of clothing, hair or loose paper may get
caught up on rotating parts. Take care that all safety guards are installed at all times.
At swivel arms and moving loading devices, there is a risk of crushing. Take care in the
area of drive shafts and motor couplings. Do not remove safety guards.

2.2.13.5 Work on running machine/plant


Work may be carried out on running parts of the machine/plant only if this is unavoidable.
Persons must not be endangered when working on running parts of the machine/plant.
Always observe the necessary protective measures when threading the paper web.
Wear close-tting clothing. Loose clothing may be caught by moving machine parts.
Use personal protective clothing and equipment.

When work is carried out on drive side or in other areas of the machine/plant which
cannot be observed, inform the chief operator prior to start of work.
Enter conned passages only in unavoidable cases. Inform the chief operator before-

Hand-held compressed-air and uid spraying devices must be tted with sufciently long
nozzle pipes so that danger to the hands is precluded. The actuating valves must close
automatically on release.
Tools which are used while the machine/plant is running may be drawn into the ma-
chine/plant. These tools must therefore have a predetermined breaking point. When
the tool is drawn into the machine/plant, the tool breaks at the predetermined breaking
point. When the tool breaks, the personnel must not be endangered. The handles of
tools must therefore be made of wood, plastic or bamboo, for example. The handles of
tools must have neither ring grips nor thicker parts.
Stop the respective machine group before removing broke that has got stuck. Safeguard
the respective machine group against starting. If required, also stop the adjacent ma-

chine group(s). If required, run the machine/plant at crawl speed in inching mode. There
is a risk of falling in the area of the couch broke chests/broke pulpers. Pay attention to
barriers.
Rolls located on the outside of the machine clothing represent a special danger zone.
These rolls are accessible across the width of the machine/plant. Because of this, these

rolls might cause the operators to remove paper shreds and deposits by hand. This may

2.2.13.8 Safety measures for work during a shutdown


If there is any possibility of danger to persons, stop the machine/plant or machine groups
prior to start of work. Disconnect the machine/plant or machine groups from the energy
supply. Safeguard the machine/plant or machine groups against unintentional starting
by means of a safety padlock and a warning sign.
If persons are also endangered by adjacent machine groups, safeguard the respective
adjacent machine groups in the same way.
Exercise caution when using hydraulic withdrawal and mounting devices for bearings,
hubs, etc. Parts may break loose with great force and at high speed. Provide suitable
anchoring and stops for hydraulic withdrawal and mounting devices. Never use com-
pressed air.
A bursting pressure tube may cause serious accidents. Check pressure tubes for hy-
draulic and pneumatic actuation, pressure cylinders, lifting devices, etc., at regular inter-
vals for:

Ageing
Replace damaged, worn or aged pressure tubes.
When performing any work on hydraulic, pneumatic, steam, water or lubrication con-
nections, turn off and safeguard the respective pressure generators. Also shut off and

2.3 Safety instructions regarding the sensor


The (emergency) stop buttons of the scanners are installed in separate manual controls.
Pushing an (emergency) stop button stops the scanner in a controlled manner
(see scanner operation manual).

Important rules
The recognized rules and measures of the national and international safety organizations
such as VDE 0100, VDE 0105, etc., apply for all measurements made using the system
of the Voith Paper GmbH & Co. KG.

Protective equipment and safety guards


Protective equipment and safety guards must be used and maintained according to the
regulations. Any form of misuse and unauthorized removal are prohibited.
Damaged protective equipment must be replaced immediately.

Authorized staff and safety measures


Existing safety devices or measures preventing unauthorized operation must not be mod-
ied or rendered ineffective.
Do not start any maintenance or service works before preparatory safety measures have
been carried out (protection against unauthorized start-up, etc.).
The units may be operated by trained staff only.

2.4 Safety regulations regarding radiation


The aim of this chapter is to provide the radiation protection ofcer on the customer side
with an insight in the radiation protection equipment (shutters and other devices) installed
in the basis weight measuring systems of the Voith Paper GmbH & Co. KG. The radiation
protection ofcer can then instruct the staff accordingly with regard to proper operation
and behavior.
Regulations issued by authorities have to be observed.
The text does not serve to give evidence of expert knowledge in the sense of the Radi-

Both the source and the receiver heads have an air circulation system that will keep the
air behind the external window in rapid motion. An air temperature sensor is located in
the air stream.
The signal coming from this temperature sensor is used to calculate the air density com-

4.2 Operating principle and measurement algorithm

4.2.1 General description


As the radiation penetrates the sheet, it will interact with the charged particles in the
matter in several ways.
Beta rays can lose energy by colliding inelastically with the electrons in the atoms. In this
case the beta ray not only slows down, but it also changes its direction, i.e. it scatters.
A beta particle can also collide elastically with the atomic nucleus, in which case it scat-
ters without a loss of energy. A small amount of a beta particle's energy is also lost in this
case, as the electromagnetic eld around the atoms causes the particles to decelerate
and emit X-rays (Bremsstrahlung).
The absorption of beta energy by matter is generally proportional to the density of elec-
trons in the matter.
For all common elements, with the exception of hydrogen, the mass number of an atom is
close to two times the number of electrons in the atom, so the mass absorption coefcient
for a beta ray with a given energy is almost independent of the element. Hydrogen, of
course, has one electron and a mass number of 1, so any material with a high Hydrogen
content will have a high absorption.
Elastic scattering per unit mass increases with increasing mass number. Even through
there is no energy loss, the elastic scattering increases the average path through the
sheet, and therefore increases the absorption by the inelastic collisions. A beta sensors
ash sensitivity is primarily a result of the increased elastic scattering by the heavier ele-

ments in ash. The sensor is compensated for ash variations by the proper selection of
source and receiver geometry.
Increasing basis weight reduces the average energy of the beta particles; the absorption
coefcient increases with lower energy. This means that if the sensor windows get dirty
thus increasing the total mass, the sensor will become marginally more sensitive requir-

ing a small correction. The basis weight sensor is equipped with an internal standard

Since the beta absorption does not accurately obey Beer's law, the calculation algorithm
used by Voith Paper GmbH & Co. KG is somewhat complex.
The basis weight sensor uses a 3 x 3 detector matrix in the receiver. Corner elements

in this matrix are summed up in the analog electronics, so that there are 6 detector
outputs from the detector. In addition to the detector outputs, both the upper and the
lower air column temperatures are measured and used in the basis weight algorithm. A

gap sensor (z-sensor) with a frequency output is also provided and used to compensate
sensor readings for gap variations. Ratios of signals from individual detector channels
are used to calculate corrections for CD and MD misalignment and sheet utter.

4.2.2 Basis weight calculation algorithm

4.2.2.1 General
Data from the six detector channels is collected at a high sampling rate.
In scan mode the software can either run the complete algorithm for each sample cycle,
or average the data over a prole data box and then run the algorithm with the average
values.
In single point and sample mode the detector signals can be averaged over a predeter-
mined time period and the algorithm is then calculated with the average values.
The rst part of the measurement algorithm calculates a weighted sum of the detec-
tor signals corrected for machine direction and cross direction alignments errors, sheet
utter effects, and errors caused by variations in the gap size.
The second part of the measurement algorithm linearizes this corrected signal and uses
it together with the data collected during standardization to calculate the nal basis
weight. Air column temperature corrections and possible dirt compensation are included
in the second part of the algorithm.

4.2.2.2 Alignment and sheet utter compensation


Alignment and sheet position corrections are based on the measurement of radiation
beam shape using a multi-element detector array and combining this data with the output
of an inductive gap size sensor (z-sensor).

6.2.1.5 Dynamic Sample mode


This mode is used to determine grade-dependent slopes and offsets by comparing sen-
sor readings at a selected location to a reel sample taken from that same location.
The Dynamic Sample mode is similar to the Fixed point mode ( Page 6-2, Chap-
ter 6.2.1.4).
The two modes differ in the fact that the Dynamic Sample mode allows short mini-
scans that are used to measure an average value over an area that is used for cutting a
laboratory sample from the reel.
The average basis weight during the sampling time is displayed, as well as basis weight
variations.

6.2.1.6 Sampling / verication mode


This mode is used to verify the sensor function, or to recalibrate the sensor with standard
samples outside the sheet.
Typically this is done with the scanner in the home position (garage).
Other positions may also be needed, the sample position must therefore be pro-
grammable
After the user has set the sample mode, the scanner is moved to sample position and
the sensor is standardized.
As the sample position is not necessarily the same as the home position, utter and

6.3 Conguration

6.3.1 Standardization
The sensor is standardized in the garage position at three positions (open, closed, inter-
nal standard) according to programmable intervals.
The sensor always returns to the sheet after being off sheet.

The standardization interval is specied in the system as a set-up data item.

During the standardization, open, closed and internal standard readings are taken for
the six detector signals.
Upper and lower air column temperature signals as well as the output frequency of the
z-sensor are also recorded.
The software provides a suitable settling time before these readings are taken.

6.3.2 Measurement sequence


Procedure
1. Wait for 2 seconds after closing the shutter before taking any data. Check shutter
status signal and alarm if shutter is not closing.

2. Collect and average signals from the six detector outputs for 5 seconds, store as
background values (Vb3, Vb22, Vb12, Vb23, Vb32, and Vb21). These background
values are saved and used for on-sheet calculations.
3. Open the shutter but keep the ag still in (active shutter drive, inactive ag drive) and
wait for 2 seconds. Check shutter status signal, alarm if the shutter is not opening.

Initial start-up is carried out by Voith Paper GmbH & Co. KG service personnel.

6.4.1 Correlation

6.4.1.1 Overview
This procedure is intended to provide a basis for establishing consistent and veriable
measurement with the basis weight sensor in the mill environment.
The correlation describes the interrelation of two characteristics, events or states. In
sensor-related applications we differentiate between static and dynamic correlation.
The static correlation is used to monitor the factory-provided calibration of the sensor
and thus the repeatability of all measured basis weight values.
This method allows to detect malfunctions of the sensor or other factors affecting the
quality of the measurement at an early stage.
Dynamic correlation means the collection of grade-specic slope and offset values based
on dynamic sampling, i. e. the ne adjustment of the sensor to the corresponding paper
grade.

The sensor is supplied with a set of calibration constants.
These calibration constants are based on laboratory standards and best available infor-
mation on the customers paper ash composition.
These standards must be measured with the corresponding sensor at regular intervals
to ensure that the repeatability of all measured values is guaranteed.

1. Press the Off-sheet push-button.
2. Wait until the scanner has stopped completely.
3. Check the radiation warning lights.
4. Open coupling.
5. Push the heads apart to provide access to the measuring gap.

6.4.1.3 Dynamic correlation


This procedure is based on single point measurement / miniscan of the sensor on a
selected location on the sheet, where both CD and MD variations are small, logging the
data just before the reel turn up and the cutting of laboratory samples from the reel at
the selected location.
For the best accuracy it is important to time the sampling precisely and to work speedily;
this ensures that the lab samples are measured with the smallest ambient inuence
possible.
As paper immediately adjusts to the ambient climate, the only way for the lab to calculate
the exact basis weight is to use the moisture value and the value of the corresponding
dry weight of the sample.

Procedure
1. Select a location on the sheet where the basis weight is relative stable in MD and
CD direction.
2. Measure the distance from the sensor window centerline to the edge of the sheet.
3. Log the measured value.
4. Make sure that the necessary equipment is available.
5. Ensure that the machine operator is ready to take a sample from the reel.
6. Just before taking the sample, set the scanner to Dynamic sample mode at the
selected location.
7. Perform a single point measurement / miniscan at the selected location just before

changing the reel.


8. Mark the outer layers of the reel with color.
9. After the reel change quickly remove the outer layers until reaching the marking.

10. Cut out samples from several layers at the selected location of the reel.

New slope and offset values are calculated by rst graphing the laboratory data for a
given grade as a function of the sensor readings and by nding the best t straight line
for the points on this graph.
The most convenient way to determine slope and offset is to use a suitable spreadsheet
program such as Excel, and use the spreadsheet tools to t a linear trend line to the
data.
The graph below ( Page 6-9, Fig. 6-4) was made using Excel. Slope and offset of this
line are then used to determine the new calibration data.
The data must cover a wide range of basis weight values within a grade with good re-
peatability before both slope and offset can be determined.

problem, even though the actual basis weight readings may not initially change.

A signicant rapid drop (>15%) in the open sensor signal is often caused by dirt build-up
on the windows.

Other causes may be faulty sensor electronics, a loose connection, or a shutter that is
not opening fully.
A change in the ag (internal Mylar standard) reading is also normally caused by dirt on
the windows. It can also be an indication of dirt build-up on the ag itself due to dirty
purge air.
Other causes can be malfunctioning ag valves, ag actuator cylinders, or the ag drive
system.
A large change in the closed sensor signal is caused either by an electronic failure or, if
there is a problem with the purge air, condensation or oil inside the sensor.
A malfunctioning detector temperature controller can cause signicant daily variations
in the closed sensor signal that follows ambient temperature variations, or it can be an
indication of a detector element that is starting to fail.
A malfunction of the shutter or the ag in the upper head can cause signicant changes in
the standardization values. The minimum air pressure required for the reliable operation
of the shutter and ag actuators is 400 kPa (4 bar).
The shutter warning light remaining red indicates this condition. A shutter that opens
only partially also causes the shutter warning light to come on.
A red shutter warning light means not fully closed.
The red light cannot be relied upon as an indicator of a properly functioning shutter as the
light turns red even when the shutter moves just slightly off from the fully closed position.

WARNING
Danger of body parts being crushed when moving the sensor carriage.
The following works may only be carried out when the sensor carriage is in garage
position.

6.8.1 Sensor surfaces


The sensors are installed in the lower and/or upper sensor carriage.
It depends on the physical values to be measured and on the customer which sensors
are used.

NOTICE
Basis weight and ash sensors come with very thin protective lms that are easily dam-
aged. In the case of sensors with windows made of glass, the glass can get scratched.
Defective membranes falsify the measured values and may damage the sensor electron-
ics.
Scratched glass windows can falsify the measured values.
Mechanical damage of the sensor surface due to unsuitable cleaning agents and aids
must be avoided by all means.
To clean the sensor surface, only use a soft cloth and methyl alcohol or soap sud if

To ensure optimum product and plant availability, repairs and maintenance measures
have to be performed by Voith or by a specialist company authorized by Voith.
Regular maintenance work necessary for operation as well as minor repairs are excluded
( Chapter 7 Maintenance).
Spare parts must meet the technical and design requirements stipulated by Voith. This
is ensured by original Voith spare and wear parts or spare and wear parts released by
Voith.

Do not attempt to replace the window unless shutter indicator shows that it is safe to do
so!
Always check the radiation warning lights.
If lights indicate that the shutter is still open, send the heads off sheet and call for
service.
Procedure
1. Press the Off-sheet push-button and wait until the scanner has stopped completely.
2. Check the radiation warning lights.
3. Open coupling.
4. Push the heads apart to provide access to the window.
5. Undo the screws of the window assembly.
6. Replace window assembly and membrane for the Pm147 receiver.
7. Position the upper head back in place correctly.
8. Close coupling.

Only a person with appropriate training and a written authorization is allowed to replace
the array detector unit.
