Critical Reflection

For the TSL 3113 subject, Developing and Using Resources in the ESL Classroom, we
have been given a assignment that is separated to four parts which involves individual and pair
work. For the first task, I collaborate with Khavitraa Simmathiri d/o Appanah to review and adapt
the English KSSR textbook. For this task we need to adapt one of the materials in the textbook
and justify the rationalities for the changes made by referring the ten factors in selection and
evaluation that we have learnt. We have a few options to pick from the textbook and we have
finally decided to adapt some exercises on prepositions from the Year 3 KSSR textbook. We
made some adaptations to the exercises from the textbook by turning it into a worksheet. Some
of the improvements that we did are the presence of illustrations, guidance, simplification on the
text structure and bigger fonts for better viewing.

At first, we thought that we need to totally change the whole exercises to a new one but
still focus on preposition. Fortunately, we did quite a few consultations with Madam Azlinda Abd
Aziz, our subject lecturer and it seems that we need to redo our work as we are only need to
make a few alterations without changing the content of the materials. From here, we are aware
the importance of consultations in order to avoid any misunderstandings and seek some
advices from the person with experience.

For the second task, the trainees need to do it individually where we have to plan and
write a 60 minute lesson plan based on the KSSR syllabus and present the teaching and
learning materials that we adapt and exploit in the lesson plan in seven minutes. I decide to use
one of my own lesson plans that I did during my first practicum last semester. By using the Year
4 lesson plan for the topic Care for the Sea under the theme World of Knowledge, I decide to
adapt one of materials that I have used during my lesson, theTyphoon Board. I made some
upgrades to the board to make it more durable, utilized and easier to be handled in the class. In
this task, the trainees are also need to present orally in front of the lecturer about the teaching
and learning materials. With the help of my slide presentation and some demo of the Typhoon

Board, I manage to explain the reasons for my material selection and adaption and the process
undertaken to produce the materials.

From this task, I manage to improve my way to design lesson plans that meet the
requirement needed especially by considering the factors of materials selection and the
students level and abilities in learning English subject .I never thought that teaching and
learning materials can be a big impact during the lesson that can totally change teaching and
learning style. I always thought that the purpose of having material for a lesson is to add a fun
and more hands on experience to the learning before. I am confident that this material can be
used in different kind of topics or situations and can last for a very long time.

The third task requires the trainees to design a checklist that is specifically to evaluate
the teaching and learning materials for our lesson plan that we presented for the second task
mentioned earlier. This task needs to be done individually which quite challenging for me to
carry out. Yet, I am able to go on with the task by referring to the examples given by the
lecturers and some researches in the internet.

The last part of the assignment is writing a critical reflection in about 1000 words which
require 2 pages that contains the experience and value of the whole assignment. The selection
of teaching and learning materials is an integral part of curriculum planning and delivery in
schools. Children and students come into contact with a vast array of print, visual and
multimedia materials in their daily lives. Educators have a duty of care to ensure that the
teaching and learning materials with which children and students are presented, or towards
which they are directed, are appropriate to their developmental growth and relevant to the
achievement of appropriate learning outcomes.

As a conclusion, I have learned that we need to consider that selecting and adapting
teaching and learning materials should be taken more seriously. The uses of teaching and
learning materials are the best teaching aids which can help our pupils to understand what we
are teaching. The ten basic elements in selecting and adapting teaching and learning materials
should not be taken lightly in order to get the best materials for the class.
