SPECIFICATION

Aluminium Work

ITEM HEADING DESCRIPTION

A Material All aluminium members and materials unless otherwise specified


must be extruded.

All aluminium sections shall be from an aluminium company to be


approved by the S.O. Immediately after acceptance of tender, the
Contractor shall submit the name of said company. The aluminium
section shall have a minimum thickness of 1.2mm.

All aluminium extruded sections unless otherwise specified shall be


an approved Architectural aluminium alloy of either B6063 or KE-45
or its equivalent conforming to the requirements of BS 1470-1475:
1972.

Hardness shall be T-5 conforming to B.S. 1474.

All aluminium members to be fabricated to the best standard or


workmanship under experienced factory supervision and control.

All joints in frames, corners, junctions or intersection shall be


electrically welded.

B Fixing All units shall be properly fixed and installed n the indicated
positions with all necessary lugs, straps, brackets, etc. of the units
as shown on the drawings.

Where couplings are made either direct or with mullions or transom,


joints must be bedded with mastic, couplings must be sealed with
good quality mastic.

Fixing screws, nuts, bolts, rivets and other fastening devices shall
be aluminium, stainless steel or cadmium plated to the Architect's
approval. Where visible, they shall blend with the finish of the
Aluminium extrusions.

All fixing anchors, brackets, attachment used in the erection of


windows and doors shall be stainless steel, galvanised steel or zinc
or zinc-coated steel and be of sufficient gauge or size to withstand
any loading, stresses and the like.

A Finish All aluminium surfaces shall be etched and anodised to a colour to

the approval of the S.O. and shall conform to the requirements of


B.S. 1615 : 1972 or as amended, and the Contractor is required to
submit details of the anodising process after acceptance of the
tender. The anodic thickness of the coating shall be a minimum of
15 Microns and free from alloy defects, dye marks scratches and
other surface blemishes.
The Contractor shall submit duplicate samples demonstrating the
limits of colour range within which the production materials.

B Glass And Glass and the glazing shall be locally manufactured M.S.G. Glazing
Glazing clear float glass or equivalent to be approved by the S.O. and in
accordance with B.S. 952 and free from bubbles, specks all other
defects.

All glass shall be delivered in proper containers with maker's name,


guarantee, type of glass and thickness or weight of glass attached
to the outside of the containers.

Glass to be sized to allow provision for expansion of both glass and


aluminium frames.

C Glazing Fixing of glass shall be with aluminium bead in conjunction with an


Beads approved non-hardening glazing compound and "Neoprene" glazing
gaskets.

Glazing beads shall be of extruded section of the snap on type in


the same finish as the frames.

D Structural All windows etc. shall be designed to withstand loads due to:-
Design
Wind pressure
Dead loads of infill panels etc.
Live loads that may be imposed.

And a guarantee is to be given for the above design requirements if


required.

E Shop The Contractor shall be responsible for accurate site measurements


Drawings for all aluminium work before fabrication.

Dimension given in tender documents are overall approximate sizes


and are not intended for fabrication purpose.

Complete shop drawings of all the work to be furnished will then be


submitted to the Architect for approval not later than two months
after acceptance of tender before factory fabrication.

A Erection All items under this heading shall be set in their correct locations
as shown in the drawings and shall be level plumb and square at
their proper elevation and in alignment with all work.

Site measurement and accuracy of all aluminium works shall be the


responsibility of the Contractor.

All items under this heading shall be installed in openings prepared.


The openings shall be set plump, square level and in exact
alignment with surrounding work.

All joints between metal and masonry shall be fully caulked and
pointed.

B Protection The aluminium frames are not to be allowed to rub or slide against
each other and significant surfaces should be well protected during
transportation. They must be wrapped with stout paper, cardboard
or other protective media which must not be allowed to get damp.

To prevent damage by agents such as contaminated moisture,


condensation, cement and plaster splashes, all exposed aluminium
surfaces shall be protected by non-yellowing transparent lacquers
which weather away naturally in service or strippable tapes which
can be easily removed or wax coating or white grease which can be
removed if desired.

Strippable tapes shall possess bond strength between the tapes


and the adhesive which is greater than that between the adhesive
and the metal surfaces so that it can be readily stripped even after
twelve months or more external exposure, leaving no adhesive
residue. If for any reasons tapes are removed during the building
operations they must be promptly replaced.

C Cleaning The Contractor shall be responsible for the removal of protective


material and cleaning of the aluminium and glass inside and outside
on completion and replace all cracked and broken glass.

The Contractor shall ensure that all aluminium and glass shall be
thoroughly cleaned with plain water or water with soap or household
detergent on completion of the job. No abrasive agents shall be
used.

A General Since the dimension of sections, elevations etc. as shown on the


referred drawings are designed to follow the standard building
module, no deviation from these dimensions are allowed.

to scale dimensions.

Size of panels measured in the Bills of Quantities is only the


approximate size. The Contractor shall take accurate measurement
on site for their fabrication.
