Question1: Give the equations of two lines passing through (2, 14). Calculate how many more
such lines are there also give reason?

Solution:

The equations of lines are, y = 7x and x + y = 16. When we put x = 2 and y = 14, it satisfies both
the equation.

There are infinitely many lines possible as there are infinitely many linear equations, which are
satisfied by the coordinates of the point (2, 14).

CBSE Class 9th Mathematics Solved Practice Paper

Solution:

In the given question, AB is a chord of a circle with centre O and OM AB .

Now we have to prove that OM bisects AB or AM = MB

In AMO & BMO , we have .

OA OB [radii of a circle]
AMO =BMO [each 90o ]
OM = OM [common]
BMO = AMO [by RHS congruence rule]
Then, AM = MB [by congurence parts of conguent triangles]

Question6: Find the area of a quadrilateral given below.

Solution:

In the given figure, ABCD is a quadrilateral where, AE = BC = 8 cm, CD =17 cm & DE = 8 cm

Now, in right angled CED,

CD2 = CE2 + DE2 [by Pythagoras theorem]

(17)2 = CE2 + 82

Question7: PQRS is a parallelogram, whose area is 180 cm2 and A is any point on the diagonal
QS. The area of ASR = 90 cm2. With reason state if it is true or false.

Solution:

Here, PQRS is parallelogram

Areas of PQRS =180 cm2

Now, QS is its diagonal which divides it into two triangles of equal areas.

Area of RQS = PSQ = 90 cm2

Now, A is any point on QS.

Question10: Three equal cubes are placed adjacently in a row. Find the ratio of total surface area
of the new cuboid to that of the sum of the surface areas of the three cubes.

Solution:

Let a cm be the edge of three equal cubes.

As, surface area of a single cube = 6 (Edge)2

= 6a2 cm2

Sum of the surface areas of the three cubes = 6a2 + 6a2 +6a2 = 18a2 cm2

Then, ABCD is a trapezium.

Question13: A square is inscribed in an isosceles right angled triangle, so that the square and the
triangle have one angle common. Show that the vertex of the square opposite the vertex of the
common angle bisects the hypotenuse.

Solution:

Let the triangle be ABC in which A = 90

and AB = AC.(i)

Let ADEF is a square, therefore,

AD = AF.(ii)

From equations (i) and (ii), we get

AB AD = AC AF

BD = CF ...(iii)

In, CFE and EDB,

CFE = EDB = 90

BD = CF [from Eq(iii)]

DE = EF [sides of a square]

Therefore, by SAS congruence rule, CFE = EDB

So, CE = BE

Hence, vertex E of the square bisects the hypotenuse BC.

Question14: Let y varies directly as x. If y = 12 when x = 4, then write a linear equation. What is
the value of y, when x = 5?

Solution:

Here, y varies directly as x

y x y = c x ... i

Where, c = arbitrary constant

Given, y =12 and x = 4

Then, from equation (i), we get 12 = 4c

c3

On putting the value of c in equation (i), we get

y = 3x is the required linear equation.

When x = 5, then y 3 5 15 .

Let PQ be the diameter of a circle C (O, r) and PRQ is an angle in semi-circle.

Now we have to prove that PRQ= 90

We know that, the angle subtended by an arc of a circle at its centre is twice the angle formed by
the same arc at a point on the remaining part of circle.

So, POQ = 2 PRQ

180 = 2 PRQ [ POQ is a straight line]

PRQ = 90

Question16: The floor of a rectangular hall has a perimeter 250 m. If the cost of painting the

four walls at the rate of Rs. 10 per m is Rs. 15000, then what is the height of the wall.

Solution:

Suppose, the length of the rectangular hall = l , breadth = b and height = h

Cost of painting the four walls 15000

Now, area of four walls = 2
1500 m 2

Cost of painting per m 10

According to the question,

Perimeter of the hall 2 l b 250 m ... i

Also we have area of four walls 1500 m2

ABC, E and F are the mid-points of AB and AC, respectively.

1
Now we have to prove EF BC and EF BC.
2

Through vertex C, draw CD AB and let it meet extended EF at D.

Now, in AEF and CDF,

AFE = CFD [vertically opposite angles]

AF = FC [since, F is mid-point of AC]

and EAF = FCD [alternate angles between parallel lines AB and CD]

AEF = CDF [by ASA congruence rule]

Then, AE = CD and EF = FD(i) [by CPCT]

Also, AE = BE (ii) [since, E is the mid-point of AB]

From equations (i) and (ii), we get

AE = BE = CD (iii)

Also, BE CD

Now, one pair of opposite sides is parallel and equal

So, BCDE is a parallelogram.

ED BC or EF BC and ED = BC

Now, BC = ED = EF + FD = 2EF

Therefore, the line segment joining the mid-points of two sides of a triangle is parallel to the third side
and equal to half of it.

Question23: Prove that a cyclic parallelogram is a rectangle.

Solution:

Suppose, PQRS is a parallelogram inscribed in a circle

CBSE Class 9th Mathematics Solved Practice Paper

We have to prove that PQRS is a rectangle

Since, PQRS is a cyclic quadrilateral.

P + R =180(i)

But P = R ...(ii) [opposite angles in a parallelogram are equal]

From equations (i) and (ii), we get

P + P = 180 2 P =180 P = 90 P = R = 90

Similarly, Q = S = 90

Thus, each angle of PQRS is 90.

Hence, PQRS is a rectangle.
