Matter, Atoms, and Molecules

What is matter?
Any substance that has mass and takes up space
States of Matter
Solid, Liquid, Gas, Plasma
Plasma- like gases, but the atoms free electrons and ions
Properties of solids
Molecules packed tightly together
Molecules vibrate
Will keep their shape and volume
Properties of liquids
Molecules less packed
Can move past each other
Take on shape of container
Will keep the volume, but not the shape
Flows
Properties of gas
Molecules spread apart
Constantly moving and bumping into each other
Take on shape of container
Can change shape and volume
Flows
Changes in state
Deposition
Freezing Condensation

Melting Boiling

Sublimation
What is an atom?
The defining structure of an element, that cannot be further
broken down by chemical means
Valence electrons?
Structure of an atom
Protons, neutrons, electrons
Protons- + charge
Inside the nucleus
Neutrons- neutral charge
Inside the nucleus
Electrons- - charge
Surrounds the nucleus
# of protons = # of electrons
Chemical bond
An attraction between 2 atoms that creates chemical substances
What is a molecule?
Two or more atoms joined together chemically
Water
Hydrogen (H2)
What is a compound?
Molecule that contains 2 or more elements
All compounds are molecules, but not all molecules are
compounds
