About FactoryTalk View Machine Edition
FactoryTalk View Machine Edition is software for developing and running human-
machine interface (HMI) applications. FactoryTalk View Machine Edition is designed for
monitoring and controlling automated processes and machines.
For information about using FactoryTalk View Machine Edition to create and run
applications, see the FactoryTalk View Machine Edition Users Guide and Help.
For information about upgrading FactoryTalk View Machine Edition from a previous
version, see the Release Notes.

FactoryTalk View Studio

FactoryTalk View Studio 6.1 is a Microsoft Windows-based software program for
creating machine-level monitoring and control applications. This software runs on the
following operating systems:
Windows 7 Professional with Service Pack 1 (32-bit)
Windows 7 Professional with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3 (32-bit)
Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition with Service Pack 2 (32-bit)
Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition with Service Pack 2 (64-bit)
Windows Vista Business with Service Pack 2 (32-bit)
Windows Vista Home Basic with Service Pack 2) (32-bit)
Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition with Service Pack 2 (32-bit)

FactoryTalk View Studio contains the tools you need for creating all aspects of an HMI
application, including real-time animated graphic displays, trends, and alarm reporting.

FactoryTalk View ME Station

FactoryTalk View ME Station provides the run-time environment for the applications
you design using FactoryTalk View Studio. You can run machine-level applications on
PanelView Plus terminals, on PanelView Plus CE terminals with the Windows CE 6.0
operating system, and on personal computers.

Additional software
The FactoryTalk View Machine Edition CD also includes four additional software
products:
FactoryTalk Services Platform installs software that is shared among the
components of FactoryTalk View. The FactoryTalk Services Platform must be installed
before FactoryTalk View Studio or FactoryTalk View ME Station can be installed.
RSLinx Enterprise is a communication server built around FactoryTalk technology to
assist in developing and running your FactoryTalk View Machine Edition applications. It
is an OPC 2.05 compliant server and will run on a variety of platforms ranging from
dedicated PanelView Plus terminals to desktop computers.
RSLinx Classic is software that provides communications to a wide range of devices,
such as Logix5000 processors. RSLinx Classic is an OPC-compliant data server. RSLinx
Classic is available for personal computers only.
Adobe Reader 9.10.0.1 is software for reading and printing the online FactoryTalk
View Machine Edition UsersGuide. This FactoryTalk View Machine Edition Installation
Guide is also available online. For information about viewing the online books, see
Chapter 5.

FactoryTalk Administration Console

The FactoryTalk Services Platform includes the FactoryTalk Administration Console,
which you can use to set up FactoryTalk Security. FactoryTalk Security is a method for
setting up security for multiple Rockwell Automation products in one place.
FactoryTalk Security is intended to improve the security of your automation system by
limiting access to those with a legitimate need. FactoryTalk Security authenticates user
identities and authorizes user access to a FactoryTalk system. Security services are fully
integrated into the FactoryTalk Directory and are included as part of the FactoryTalk
Services Platform.
You can also set up FactoryTalk Security in FactoryTalk View Studio. For more
information, see Chapter 11, Setting up security, in the FactoryTalk View Machine
Edition Users Guide.

To open the FactoryTalk Administration Console:

On the Windows Start menu, click Programs >Rockwell Software > FactoryTalk

The FactoryTalk View Machine Edition tools

FactoryTalk View Studio tools

These tools are installed with FactoryTalk View Studio:
Application Documenter is software that provides detailed information about
FactoryTalk applications.
Application Manager is software for renaming, copying, deleting, backing up, and
restoring applications.
DeskLock is software that prevents Windows 7 Professional, Windows XP,
Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008 users from
exiting the FactoryTalk View application at run time. You can use this tool to set up a
customized desktop and to prevent access to Windows functions. You cannot use
DeskLock if you are running your application on a PanelView Plus or PanelView Plus
CE terminal.
ME Firmware Upgrade Wizard is software for installing new firmware releases on
an ME terminal.
ME Transfer Utility is software for moving a run-time machine-level application
(.mer file) from the development computer to PanelView Plus or PanelView Plus CE
terminals.
Tag Import and Export Wizard is software for importing or exporting the
FactoryTalk View tag database.
Diagnostics Viewer is used to view FactoryTalk Diagnostics messages using the
Windows Event Viewer.

To start the tools:

On the Windows Start menu, click Programs > Rockwell Software > FactoryTalk
View > Tools, and then click the tool to start.

To start the Diagnostics Viewer:

On the Windows Start menu, click Programs > Rockwell Software > FactoryTalk
Tools > Diagnostics Viewer.

These tools are also available from the Tools menu in FactoryTalk View Studio.

FactoryTalk tools
FactoryTalk tools are installed when you install FactoryTalk Services Platform. They are
available from the Windows Start menu.

To start FactoryTalk tools:

On the Windows Start menu, click Programs >Rockwell Software >FactoryTalk
Tools, and then click the tool to start.

FactoryTalk Activation Manager

FactoryTalk Activation Manager is installed when you install FactoryTalk View, if you
choose to install the FactoryTalk Activation Manager. It is available from the Windows
Start menu.

To start FactoryTalk Activation Manager:

On the Windows Start menu, click Programs >Rockwell Software >FactoryTalk
Activation > FactoryTalk Activation Manager to start..

System requirements
To run FactoryTalk View Studio, the recommended requirements are:
Personal computer with an Intel Pentium 4 processor (2 GHz or faster
processor recommended).
Memory (RAM). 1 GB (or more).
Hard disk space. Minimum 100 MB.
Operating system. One of:

Microsoft Windows 7 Professional with Service Pack 1 (32-bit or 64-bit).

Microsoft Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3 ( 32-bit) or later.

If you are planning to upgrade your operating system from an earlier version to
Windows XP Professional, see Answer ID 29104 (previously Tech Note
#P88739858) for information about how to perform the upgrade. If you do not
follow the recommended procedure, you will no longer be able to create or use
FactoryTalk View applications.

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard edition (or Standard edition

terminal server) with Service Pack 12 or later(32-bit or 64-bit).
Microsoft Windows Vista Business with Service Pack 2 (32-bit) or Windows
Vista Home Basic with Service Pack 2 (32-bit)

FactoryTalk View Studio is tested and supported on operating systems installed from
original Microsoft media only.

Floppy disk drive. Activation keys for upgrades to RSView Machine Edition
products are supplied on a floppy disk. FactoryTalk View Activation does not
require a floppy disk drive, although you can use floppy disks or other removable
media to transfer activations from one computer to another.

Installing
The steps below explain how to install FactoryTalk View Studio, FactoryTalk View
ME Station, FactoryTalk Services Platform, FactoryTalk Activation Manager, and
RSLinx software from the FactoryTalk View Machine Edition CD to your computer.

Required user rights

The installation process creates program folders and modifies registry entries. To make
these modifications, the user that is currently logged on must have administrative rights
on the personal computer on which FactoryTalk View is installed (for example, the
Windows 7 Professional Administrator account has these rights).

To start installation:
1. Close all open Windows programs.
2. Place the FactoryTalk View Machine Edition CD in your CD-ROM drive. The CD
should start running automatically.
If the CD does not start automatically, run D:\Setup.exe, where D is the drive
containing the CD.
When the CD window opens, these options are displayed:

The gray text pane on the right provides information about the options on the left. When
you move the mouse cursor over an option on the left, the text on the right describes what

selecting the option will do. You can also exit the installation CD from this window.

Opening installation instructions

Click Open Installation Instructions to perform these actions:
Open FactoryTalk View Installation Guide This FactoryTalk View Machine
Edition Installation Guide is available on the FactoryTalk View Machine Edition CD,
and can be opened and read using Adobe Reader. If you do not have Adobe Reader,
you can install it from the CD.
Install Adobe Reader Click this heading to install Adobe Reader software on your
computer. Use Adobe Reader to read this FactoryTalk View Machine Edition
Installation Guide and the FactoryTalk View Machine Edition Users Guide included
on the CD. To install Adobe Reader, click this heading and follow the instructions on
the screen.

Installing FactoryTalk View Machine Edition

To successfully upgrade from RSView Enterprise 4.00 to FactoryTalk View 5.00 or later, it is essential
that you follow these steps in the order they are listed.

Click Install FactoryTalk View Machine Edition to perform these installation steps:

1. Install FactoryTalk Services Platform

This step installs FactoryTalk Services Platform. If your computer has previous version of
FactoryTalk Services Platform, you are asked to uninstall the previous version.
The FactoryTalk Directory is installed and set up automatically during the installation of
FactoryTalk Services Platform. Existing FactoryTalk Directory settings, if any, are
retained on the computer.
If your operating system is Windows 7 Professional, Windows XP Professional, Windows
Server 2003, Windows Vista, or Windows Server 2008, the Windows Firewall
Configuration Utility is also installed automatically.

To install FactoryTalk Services Platform:

1. In the FactoryTalk View Machine Edition page, click Install FactoryTalk Services
Platform.

2. If you are upgrading from a previous version, you are asked to uninstall the previous
version of Services Plactform, as the following illustration shows.

Click Ok to uninstall the previous version of Services Platform.

3. Follow the on-screen instructions.
A dialog box notifies you that existing FactoryTalk Directories (if any) have been
backed up, and gives the location of the backup files.
The FactoryTalk Services Platform is installed.

4. Click Ok when you see the following window.

When the FactoryTalk Services Platform installation finishes, the wizard closes and
you are returned to the Install FactoryTalk View Machine Edition page.

2. Install FactoryTalk View Machine Edition (complete)

or

Install FactoryTalk View Machine Edition Station

This step involves installing FactoryTalk View Studio and installing FactoryTalk View
ME Station. You can install FactoryTalk View ME Station only, or install both products at
the same time.
This step also optionally installs these software products:
Microsoft SQL Server (only installed if you install both FactoryTalk View Studio
and FactoryTalk View ME Station)
RSLinx Enterprise(optional)

FactoryTalk ActivationFactoryTalk Activation Manager

To install one or both FactoryTalk View Machine Edition products:

1. Do one of the following:
To install both products, click Install FactoryTalk View Machine Edition
(complete).
To install FactoryTalk View ME Station only, click Install FactoryTalk View
Machine Edition Station.
2. You are warned that the installation will terminate all Rockwell Automation software
processes. Click Yes to proceed with the installation.

The FactoryTalk View Machine Edition Installation (InstallShield) Wizard opens.

3. If you are upgrading from a previous version, you are asked to uninstall the previous
version of FactoryTalk View, as the following illustration shows.

Click Yes to uninstall the previous version of FactoryTalk View.

4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

5. To install RSLinx Enterprise, leave the checkbox for that item selected. If you choose
not to install the RSLinx Enterprise software now, you can install it later. To activate
FactoryTalk View products, FactoryTalk Activation is defaulted to be installed on
your computer.
6. Click Finish.You are also given the opportunity to install the FactoryTalk Activation.
You must upgrade FactoryTalk Activation software to version 3.30 or later in order to
acquire new activations or use borrowed activations.
Do one of the following:
If activation is present from a previous installation, or you do not intend to use
FactoryTalk Activation on this computer, clear the check box, and then click
Finish. Previous activations cannot be borrowed.
If you removed a previous activation, or if you are installing FactoryTalk View
Machine Edition for the first time, or if you intend to borrow activations, leave the
check box selected, and then click Finish.
If you choose not to install the FactoryTalk Activation software now, you can install it
later.

7. If you previously selected the option to install RSLinx Enterprise, the RSLinx
Enterprise Installation Wizard starts, follow the on-screen instructions to finish.
8. At the end of the RSLinx Enterprise installation you are given the opportunity to view
the RSLinx Enterprise Release Notes. Make your choice, and then click Finish.
9. If you previously selected the option to install FactoryTalk Activation, tThe
FactoryTalk Activation Server Installation Wizard starts automatically.
a. Follow the on-screen instructions.
b. When you are notified that the FactoryTalk Activation Manager setup completes
successfully, click Finish.
10. At the end of the FactoryTalk View installation process you are prompted to restart
your computer. Do one of the following:
If you are not installing any other software, click Yes to restart your computer.
If you want to install RSLinx Classic, click No, and restart later.

Installing Optional Components

Install RSLinx Enterprise (optional)
RSLinx Enterprise is required for run-time communications. RSLinx Enterprise is
recommended to install after the FactoryTalk View Machine Edition installation is
complete. If you have installed RSLinx Enterprise, you can skip this step.
If you do not install RSLinx Enterprise during the FactoryTalk View Machine Edition
installation, but later decide you want to use RSLinx Enterprise, you can install it
separately.

To install RSLinx Enterprise:

1. Click Install RSLinx Enterprise (optional).
2. Follow the on-screen instructions. Click OK when you are notified RSLinx Enterprise
setup completed successfully.
3. You are given the opportunity to view the RSLinx Enterprise Release Notes. Make

applications to FactoryTalk View.

To install RSLinx Classic:

1. Click Install RSLinx Classic (optional).
2. Follow the on-screen instructions.
3. At the end of the installation you are given the opportunity to restore a previous
RSLinx Classic configuration. To do this, click Restore, and then follow the on-screen
instructions.
4. You are given the opportunity to view the RSLinx Classic Release Notes. Make your
choice, and then click Finish.

Install Rockwell Automation Faceplates and AOIs (optional)

Rockwell Automation Faceplates and AOIs provide users with content that can help them
implement applications more efficiently.
The content delivered includes faceplates and associated AOI instructions for I/O
diagnositics, Rockwell Automation Drive control and diagnostics, and Network
diagnositics.

To install Rockwell Automation Faceplates and AOIs:

1. Click Install Rockwell Automation Faceplates and AOIs (optional).
2. Rockwell Automation Faceplates is installed automatically.

Activating
FactoryTalk View Machine Edition uses activation files to activate its software packages.
Without activation, FactoryTalk View Studio runs for a grace period of seven days, and
then runs in demo mode, allowing two hours of use and no more than five displays
(including the three default displays).
Without activation, FactoryTalk View ME Station also provides a seven-day grace period
before running in demo mode on personal computers. Activation is not required for
PanelView Plus and PanelView Plus CE terminals.
You can activate FactoryTalk View Machine Edition by using FactoryTalk Activation
software to download and transfer activation files.

FactoryTalk Activation
FactoryTalk Activation provides a secure, software-based system for activating Rockwell
Software products and managing software activation files. With FactoryTalk Activation,
there is no need for a physical master disk or any physical media; instead, activation
files are generated and distributed electronically.

Installing FactoryTalk Activation software

You are given the opportunity to install FactoryTalk Activation software at the end of the
FactoryTalk View Machine Edition installation process. If you did not install FactoryTalk
Activation at that time, you can install it separately.

To install FactoryTalk Activation software manually:

1. Click Install FactoryTalk Activation (optional).
Follow the on-screen instructions.
2. If Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 is not installed on the computer, you are

Using the FactoryTalk Activation Manager

The FactoryTalk Activation tool is used to obtain the activation files needed to activate
your software. It can also be used to borrow activations from servers having available
activations, return activations back to servers, re-host activations, etc..
The FactoryTalk Activation Manager guides you through the process of obtaining
activation files.

To open the FactoryTalk Activation Manager:

On the Windows Start menu, click Programs > Rockwell Software > FactoryTalk
Activation > FactoryTalk Activation Manager.

To use the FactoryTalk Activation Manager:

1. In the FactoryTalk Activation Manager, click the Home tab then click Get New

Protecting activation files

Activation files are simple text files that must have a .lic extension.
As long as the .lic extension is retained, you can copy or rename an activation file without
harming it. However, tampering with text inside the activation file can disable your
Rockwell Software products.
If an activation file is damaged or deleted, contact Rockwell Automation Technical
Support.
For safekeeping, keep an original set of your activation files on backup media. Use
descriptive names for the files, so that you can identify them later, and copy them back to
the appropriate computers.
Activation files are locked to the Host IDs of the computers (or dongles) that need them.
Activation will fail for Rockwell Software products on a computer where the specified
Host ID is not recognized by the activation file.

Getting activations that can be borrowed

If you are upgrading from FactoryTalk View 5.10 or earlier, the FactoryTalk View Studio
activations you have already purchased cannot be borrowed. You can replace these older

activations with newer ones free of charge by a process called rehosting, or you can add
new activations. In either case, FactoryTalk Activation software must be upgraded to
version 3.30 or later to allow borrowing of activations.

installation package.

Using borrowed activations

FactoryTalk Machine Edition 6.1 supports borrowed activations for development
computers. A borrowed activation is retrieved from a pool of available activations on the
activation server, and expires after a specified length of time. Once a borrowed activation
is checked out to a particular computer, the computer can disconnect from the network.
When the time limit expires, the associated software on the computer is no longer
activated, and the activation automatically becomes available again from the servers
activation pool. A borrowed activation can also be returned to the activation server
manually before the time limit expires.

To borrow activations from a server:

1. Connect your computer to the network where the activation server is located.
2. Run the FactoryTalk Activation Manager and then click the Manager Activations
tab.
3. Click the Manage Activations tab, and then click Borrow Activations tab.To borrow a
single activation, click the checkbox that corresponds to the activation you want to
borrow, and then click Set Borrow Term. To borrow more than one activation, click
additional checkboxes for the activations you want to borrow and then click Borrow.
If you do not see the activations you want to borrow, click I Dont See My Activation
Here. The Activations in gray may not be selected as they are already borrowed by
your computer.

4. In the Set Borrow Term window, set the time of the return by entering a calendar date,
net number of days, or approximate hours (shift). The default Calendar date is the
maximum borrow term for the activation or group of activations.

To return a borrowed activation before it expires:

1. Connect to the network and run the FactoryTalk Activation Manager.
2. On the Manage Activations tab, click Return Activations, select the borrowed
activations you want to return.

Using the Activation disk

The Activation disk (also referred to as a Master disk) activates FactoryTalk View
Machine Edition products using the EvRSI activation method. This method is available

The Activation disk contains:

one or more activation files.
The activation file is the software key that activates your FactoryTalk View
Machine Edition product. Depending on what you purchase, your Activation disk has
one or more activation files. For example, if your company purchases four
FactoryTalk View Studio installations, you require four activation keys.
Multiple copies of the same software require activation keys with matching serial
numbers. All of the activation keys can be on the same Activation disk.
a program called EvMoveW.exe that moves activation keys to and from computers.
a program called ResetW.exe that reactivates a damaged activation key.
You can move activation keys to and from the Activation disk. The programs
EvMoveW.exe and ResetW.exe always stay on the Activation disk.

To add FactoryTalk View Studio to the Startup folder:

The path is \Program Files\Rockwell Software\RSView Enterprise\Launcher.exe.
2. Right-click the Launcher file name, and then click Create Shortcut.
3. Cut and paste, or drag and drop, the Shortcut to Launcher into the Startup folder.
The path in Windows XP, and Server 2003 is:

The path in Windows 7 Professional, Vista and Server 2008 is:

The Help index is similar to an index in a book, listing keywords for topics in Help. To
see and search the index, click the Index tab.

To open Internet support pages from FactoryTalk View Studio:

Click Help > Rockwell Automation on the Web, and then click the name of the web
page to view.
To use Rockwell Automation on the Web, you must have a web browser installed on your
computer, and you must have an active Internet connection.

of support information for all Rockwell Automation products. It also includes online
