Helmi: Ok.greetings.My name is Mohd Helmi; I am from UiTM Shah Alam,

from FSPU. Today I will conduct a survey, regarding, emm.. “Why you quit
your previous job”…Ok, emm.. Can you please.. (the interviewee giggles)…

Wei Liam: Ok, so my name is..aaa… Wei Liam..Wei Liam aa…What do you
want me to..

Helmi: Ok, aaa…your academic qualification, please?

Wei Liam: I’m a…I’m a QS..

Wei Liam: from TAR Collage..

Helmi: 1998..Ok..Now you are working at UEM Construction Sdn. Bhd…is it

Wei Liam:Ya..

Helmi: Ok, thank you. Ok, the original professional training..aaa…still quantity
surveying..then..ok…we move to multiple choice questions, that is the

Wei Liam: So..my last, previous company was IJM Construction Sdn. Bhd.

Helmi: Ok..IJM Construction. The..aa..can you tell , elaborate a little bit more
about the last project that you have conduct?

Wei Liam: My last project is mostly aa..commercial building..

Helmi: Commercial building..such as?

Wei Liam: ..Like aa..resort..resort..cost around..RM200 Million..

Helmi: Where are the location of the resort?

Wei Liam: ..Bukit Tinggi..Colmar Village and French Castle..

Helmi: The resort been constructed by IJM?

Wei Liam: Ya…(Smiles)

Helmi: Ok…The reason of your quitting previously is..about salary.

Wei Liam: Mostly about salary laa..Salary..salary…

Helmi: Can you..because this is for academic purposes, can you reveal
..aaa…what is your previous salary that make you not satisfy with the
aa..previous salary?

Wei Liam: My previous salary..ok..the…err..because of, first of all I’m the

assistant QS when joining IJM so my salary a bit low laa ahh…a bit low..
(asking surrounding colleague for opinion)..around RM 950 per month.

Helmi: Aaaa…How many years you stay with this salary?

Wei Liam: Because …aaaa…I have to …aaaa…gain experience with the

company…(lost of his words)

Helmi: After work around 3 years at IJM..

Wei Liam: Yes, my salary increase maybe around RM 1500..

Helmi: And then, when you work at this IJM company, did you directly work at
UEM or you got another company?

Wei Liam: I got another company..

Helmi: Ok, what is the name of the company?

Wei Liam: Jet Concept. (Spelling the company’s name) J.E.T Concept. Sdn,
Bhd.

Helmi: Basically..it’s a…

Helmi: The salary?

Wei Liam: The salary aah? Around RM3000…plus…

Helmi: How many years you work with this company?

Wei Liam: Hmmm.. 2 year plus.. 2 year plus..

Helmi: Then, aaa…. Where this Jet Concept Sdn.Bhd. located?

Wei Liam: ..in Kuchai Lama..

Helmi: ..in Kuchai Lama..the procjects conducted?

Wei Liam: Mostly, they are the main-con..main contractors doing housing
projects. Housing project for this government..aaaa…many for low cost,
medium cost double storey..

Helmi:..The PPRT one? The tall…

Wei Liam: Yes.. yes…

Helmi: The location of the PPRT if you don’t mind…

Wei Liam: Around Klang Valley..

Helmi: (Repharase the words) .. Around Klang Valley.. Ok, umm.. then,
aaaa… did you , ummm… face any problems when working at IJM or at the
Jet Concept? First I want to ask when you work at IJM. Any problem you
face?

Wei Liam: Only salary laaa… Environment is very ok, bonus ok, every thing is
ok..only salary…

Helmi: ..the colleague?The..the…

Wei Liam: very cooperative..they treat me very well…

Helmi: And then at Jet Concept, the main con of the..of the.. PPRT
development around Klang Valley..Did you face any problems?
Wei Liam: Jet Concept. Ok, First of all , having 20-30 projects per year, so,
that company only employ one QS, …

Helmi: Fuhhhh! (shocked)

Wei Liam: one QS, one account, one purchasing, two supervisors, one PM,
to run the whole job. So, very long, long working hours..

Helmi: and then you stressed out?

Wei Liam:..yes..yes..

Helmi: because all the load on your shoulder right?

Wei Liam:..yes..yes..

Helmi: Apart from this heavy work load, ok, what the other problems that you
face when working at Jet Concept?

Wei Liam: I think that’s all..very heavy working load..

Helmi: Ok.. After…As you working at IJM and Jet Concept where did you
gone after that?

Wei Liam:at UEM..

Helmi: Straight to UEM?

Wei Liam:Yes ..UEM..

Helmi: Can you reveal, not the exact figure, the round ..the range..the
approximate ?

Wei Liam: 5-10 (laughing with the colleagues).

Helmi: Seems that you happy working here..because you constantly smile
while working..ok..As the salary, did you satisfy with the salary, so far?

Wei Liam: So far, so good..

Helmi: And then, workload here?

Wei Liam: Workload here not much..

Helmi: Not much..now you are working on, aaa, Bank Rakyat ..Tower..You
are allocated at this site only?

Wei Liam:Yes..

Helmi: You are not sending at other site?

Wei Liam:Yes..

Helmi: That mean you can concentrate and..

Wei Liam: Just one project..

Helmi: Just one project..?

Wei Liam: One project..

Helmi: And the quality is more better..You don’t have any problem..ok.. How
many years you working here?

Wei Liam: Aaa…Five years..

Helmi: You starting around, 2005? Before or after the inception of Menara
Bank Rakyat?

Wei Liam: Before this project laa (Bank Rakyat)..This is not my first project,
Third project at UEM..

Helmi: The previous project at UEM?

Wei Liam: First Semi-D Linked House, at Taman Desa.

Helmi: And then you move to ..

Wei Liam: Exhibition hall for MARDI , Serdang..

Helmi: In MAEPS?

Wei Liam: Near UPM..

Helmi: Yang ada biru..dia punya bumbung biru.. Only the building or..the
whole facilities?

Wei Liam:Yes..
Helmi: the whole MAEPS been constructed by UEM?

Wei Liam:Yes..

Helmi: We got ten more minutes.. Ok…Then we move to aa…” The reason
you quitting” ok…number two.. You want to get more experience and
knowledge. As you been working 11 years, ok, what drives you to come to
work every day? Apart from gaining experience..

Wei Liam: What car I drive to work everyday? (Laugh). Money.Money…

Helmi: Money is the object lah? Money is what you target?

Wei Liam: yaa…

Helmi: You already told me about the previous experience.. What is the most
unforgettable moments or projects, or problems that you faced throughout
your 11 years of working? The most problematic…The problems that you
cannot forget..I mean, the BQ didn’t finish on time..

Wei Liam: Ugut by samseng!

Helmi: Uiyyo! Can I ask how could that happen? If It is personal..

Wei Liam: Its personal…

Helmi: owh..sorry..sorry..And then the knowledge, as you gain more

knowledge, did changing the company or doing the projects really gain your
knowledge about this quantity surveying or job? Did changing the company or
doing the projects make you understand what is QS all about?

Wei Liam: (Giggles) First aa..all my previous company is a contractor

company..i’m a QS on the behalf of the contractor company. So I’m doing
mostly the contractor works , not only my QS work, but get experience to build
houses.

Helmi: You mean you are not just do what you learn college..

Wei Liam: I learn extra by builing the houses.

Helmi: Then obviously that’s a added value In your CV, that mean if you
leave, you want to move to the next company, you think you can easily get a
new job with better salary?

Wei Liam: I don’t think I have to move to other company..

Helmi: Because you satisfied with this ..

Wei Liam: if I want to move, I want to set my own company.

Helmi: You mean you want to set your own company?

Wei Liam: Yes I always want..

Helmi: you mean, that’s your target now? How many years you will achieve
the target?

Wei Liam: Very soon… Very soon…(laughing)

Helmi:Ok, that’s a hint..We got four more minutes because this interview
will..will take about 20 minutes, as I said earlier..Ok..at this multiple choice
questions, picking the number 3 ranking is “non flexible hours”. Can you, from
your point of view , describe the non flexible hours.

Wei Liam: For my duty as a QS for the contractor, so usually at the end or
beginning of the year, there are lot of tenders coming in. Maybe 3 or 4 tenders
to be submit in 7 days.
Helmi: You mean do all the costing..

Wei Liam: All the costing..all the pricing..

Helmi: In 7 days for how many tenders?

Wei Liam: Around 4-5 tenders. Very heavy, very burden I need a lot of time..

Helmi: because at the previous company you was the only QS and you have
to do all the works by your ownself..

Wei Liam: yes..

Helmi: ok.. That leads you to come early to the office and go back very late?

Wei Liam: Go back very late, around 3-4 a.m. every day.

Helmi: Everyday?

Wei Liam: Everyday.

Helmi: For the sake of finishing the tender?

Wei Liam: Yes..

Helmi: this make you wan to leave the company?

Wei Liam: Yes..

Helmi: when you face that short period of time to finish the tenders, what did
do to ensure all the things submit on the time? You join venture with other
QS?
Wei Liam: Most of all is “tembak”. Maybe I have 5 tenders , I had done 2
calculated tenders, on the exact figure, and the rest I just “tembak”
(laughing) .

Helmi: Just cincai aa?

Wei Liam: Just cincai..No time to complete it at a good manner.

Helmi: Ok then, this burden, leads you to do the works not in appropriate
way? Are you agree with that?

Wei Liam: Yes..(nod his head).

Helmi: Because you the only one QS in the company,you are given all the
tenders to finish , and you have short period of time to complete that..This
leads to your efficiency and quality of work, I mean, when you got short
period of time, so many..

Wei Liam: It affected efficiency..

Helmi: Because you know you can do better than that?

Wei Liam: Yes..(nod his head).

Helmi: ok.. non flexible hour.. ok..thank you Mr Wei Liam for attending this
