Charlemagne's father was Pepin the Short. Pepin had made himself king by throwing out the
last of the Merovingian rulers.

Charlemagne came to power on Christmas day in 800. He ruled for 47 years.

Charlemagnes biography was the first biography of a medieval person who was not a saint or
otherwise connected with the Roman Catholic Church.

because he succeeded in bringing about a rebirth of learning and arts.
