Problem 1

Design a rigid cast iron muff coupling to transmit 25 kW at 300 rpm. The
ultimate tensile strength is 200 MPa and safety factor of 6 and yield strength
330 MPA safety factor of 4. Use 30C8 steel for the shaft, compressive
strength of 500 MPa and safety factor 5.

Given

Muff coupling
Power P = 25 kW
n = 300 rpm
ut = 200 MPa nfu = 6
y = 330 MPa nfy = 4
Shaft material 30 C8 steel
c = 500 Mpa nfc = 5

Tangential force on key

Find
Dimensions of Muff coupling

Answers
Width of key =14 mm against shaft diameter 50 mm p 5.16.
Torque

Induced shear stress in shaft Thickness of key from crushing strength

Or read height of key from data book on p5.16 and check for
Shaft diameter as it is subjected to twisting moment only. crushing strength
h = t = 9 mm
c = 76.698 < 100 MPa. Safe.

Exercises

(1) For pressure for pin is 0.3 the fitting of the shafts in problem 1 if
the protected type of flange coupling is used, find the dimensions of
flanges and bolts.

(2) Design a split muff coupling for the data given in problem 1.

(3) Design a bushed pin type flexible coupling to connect the motor
shaft and pump shaft of 50 mm and 50 mm diameter respectively
when 15 kW power is to be transmitted at 1200 rpm. The
permissible bearing pressure for pin is 0.3 MPa. Note: the bolts are
subjected to initial tightening and shearing due to torque. So consider, for the bolt,
the safe stress due to shear as 30 MPa.
