Advanced Highway and Transportation Engineering
(Answer should be explained with sketches wherever applicable)

1. Explain the coning of wheels with appropriate diagrams. What are its advantages?

2. Using the sleeper density of M+5, find out the number of sleepers required for constructing a
railway track (B.G) 640 meters long.
3. Explain full cloverleaf interchange with layout diagram.
4. What are the different types of sleepers available as per material used in construction? What is composite
sleeper index (CSI)?
5. Calculate the maximum permissible train load that can be pulled by a locomotive having four pairs of
driving wheel carrying an axle load of 24 tonnes each. The train has to run at a speed of 80 kmph on a straight
level track (B.G). Also calculate the reduction in speed, if train has to climb a gradient of 1 in 200. If train
climbs the gradient with a 2 curve, then what would be reduction in speed?

6. Calculate the maximum permissible speed on a curve of high speed B.G. track having the
following particulars.

i. Degree of the curve = 1

ii. Amount of super elevation = 8.0 cm.
iii. Length of transition curve = 130 m.
iv. Maximum speed of the section likely to be sanctioned = 153 kmph.
7. What are Check Rails and Fish Plates?
8. What are the necessary applications of traffic assignment in transportation demand analysis?
9. Mention the factors affecting modal split.
10. Discus various types of traffic signs as per IRC standard.
11. Define Time mean speed and Space mean speed.
Twenty spot speed observations were taken on a State Highway and are as follows: 50, 40,
60, 54, 45, 31, 72, 58, 43, 52, 46, 56, 43, 65, 33, 69, 34, 51, 47 and 41.
Calculate: (i) Time mean speed (ii) Space mean speed and verify the relation between the two.

12. Discuss about the fundamental diagrams of traffic flow showing relation among the parameters-
speed, flow and density.

13. The 15- minute traffic counts on cross roads 1 and 2 during peak hour are observed as 178 and
142 vehicles per lane respectively approaching the intersection in the direction of heavier traffic flow.
If the amber times required are 3 and 2 seconds respectively by the two loads based on approach
speeds, design the signal timings by trial cycle method. Assume average time headway as 2.5
seconds during green phase.
