Homework No. 1
TYPES, PROPERTIES, TRADE NAME AND COSTS OF CURRENTLY AVAILABLE CEMENT IN
THE PHILIPPINES

A cement is a binder, a substance used in construction that sets, hardens and adheres to
other materials, binding them together. Cement is seldom used solely, but is used to bind
sand and gravel (aggregate) together. Cement is used with fine aggregate to
produce mortar for masonry, or with sand and gravel aggregates to produce concrete.

Types of Portland Cement

Classification Application
Type I General purpose General construction (most
buildings, bridges, pavements,
precast units, etc)
Type II Moderate sulfate Structures exposed to soil or water
resistance containing sulfate ions
Type III High early strength Rapid construction, cold weather
concreting
Type IV Low heat of hydration Massive structures such as dams.
(slow reacting) Now rare.
Type V High sulfate resistance Structures exposed to high levels
of sulfate ions
White White color Decorative (otherwise has
properties similar to Type I)
Trade Names
Northern Cement Corporation
1. NCC Maxplus (Cost Range: 210-220 Pesos per bag)
- Designed to suit cement requirements from concrete
foundations, house construction, concrete hollow
blocks and decorative bricks, masonry works and with
improve durability characteristics.
- Designed for general construction needs. It is a
blended Portland cement and highly cementitious
pozzolanic materials. Also available in 40 kg bags and
in any hardware stores in Region 1, 3 and CAR.
Northern Type 1P exceeds PNS Requirement PNS 63;
2006 and ASTM C595.

2. NCC Supreme (Cost Range: 205-215 Pesos per bag)

- Considered the best in terms of workability, excellent
performance and strength, preferred by the established
and elite circle in the construction firms.
- Supreme is used for high strength cement requirement
from high rise buildings to roads, bridges, dams, tunnels
and airport. Available in 40-kg bags, bulk and tonner
bags. Widely accepted by major contractors because of
its excellent workability, superior strength and admixture compatibility and
surpasses standard PNS 07; 2005 and ASTM C150.

3. NCC Master Palitada (Cost Range: 205-215 Pesos per bag)

- Masonry cement is specially designed and
manufactured for hollow blocks laying and filling,
plastering and finishing.
- Master Palitada Type N is specially manufactured for
plastering works, hollow block filling and laying and
finishing. Master Palitada consists of Portland cement
and special ingredients to enhance plasticizing
properties and improve functional areas of
workability, durability, strength and magnificent
finish. It tops PNS ASTM C91 requirements.
Eagle Cement Corporation
1. Eagle Cement Advance (Cost Range: 205-215 Pesos per bag)
- For general concrete construction and concrete
products.
- Exceeds the high level of compressive strength
required by the Philippine National Standards
(PNS) and American Society for Testing Materials
(ASTM).
- Enhances concrete workability; allows easy
application; provides superb finish for masonry,
improved strength and long-term durability.
- Type 1P blended cement composed of clinker, gypsum and highly reactive
Philippine tuff material.
- Available in 40-kg bags.
Republic Cement Group
1. Republic Portland Plus (Cost Range: 210-220 Pesos per bag)
- This special mix of ingredients is made of smaller particles that
fill in concrete voids making concrete more compact. This
minimizes possible water and chemical penetration that may
cause rusting and expansion of steel bars that may result to
cracking and other concrete deterioration.
- A Tibay Test was conducted based on ASTM standards to assess
the durability of the three leading cement brands in the country.
Three mortar bars, each made from a different cement brand,
were placed in an NaOH solution at 25 Celsius. This is
equivalent to 25 years of concrete exposure to different elements. Because the
REPUBLIC mortar bar was more compact, it was not easily penetrated by water
and chemicals. Thus, results show that the REPUBLIC mortar bar has the least
chemical reaction.
- Some features of the cement is denser concrete with reduced permeability, better
concrete cohesion, lower water requirement, improved workability.
2. Republic Fortune (Cost Range: 200-210 Pesos per bag)
- It is a blended cement that uses high quality fly ash to
enhance its workability and long-term durability. A
study conducted by WWF-Philippines shows that the
total environmental burden, which includes carbon
emission, from manufacturing blended cement is one-
fourth lower than in producing OPC.
- Some features are lower water requirement than
Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), denser concrete,
better concrete cohesion, improved workability,
improved flowability.

3. Republic Wallmaster (Cost Range: 205-215 Pesos per bag)

- It is a Type N masonry cement that fully complies
with the requirements of Philippine National
Standards (PNS) and American Society for Testing
and Materials (ASTM) C91 standards.
- True to its name, it is the master in all masonry
applications such as Plastering, Laying of concrete
hollow blocks and various masonry units, Filling of
concrete hollow blocks, Spraycreting, Floor Topping.

4. Republic Rapidset (Cost Range: 195-210 Pesos per bag)

- Rapidset is a high performance Portland cement
(Type 1) that guarantees high early strength and
shorter drying time. Rapidset Cement is
recommended for precast and hollow block making.
- Some features are , High early and final day strength
and faster setting time, high performance,
consistent strength and compatibility to most
chemical and mineral admixtures.
5. Republic Kapit-Balay (Cost Range: 200-215 Pesos per bag)
- KAPIT-BALAY has special-formula proprietary
cement with fly-ash for strength and durability. It
has structural strength proven for 1-2 storey
homes and meets American and Philippines
standards for Type P compressive strength. It
possesses good workability to allow new disaster
resilient designs and faster construction of
communities. It was used in construction and
rehabilitation projects for communities in Bohol,
Cebu, Iloilo, Leyte, and Samar.

6. Republic Mindanao Pozzolan Premium (Cost Range: 190-205 Pesos per bag)
- Mindanao Pozzolan Premium is high quality
pozzolan cement with Philippine tuff that makes
concrete continuously gain strength over time.
Mindanao Pozzolan Premium is available in Visayas
and Mindanao.
- Some features are lower heat of hydration, denser
concrete with reduced permeability, longer board
life, Improved workability.
