7 Main Body of the project -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. Based on the 3DeBook in the DVD, answer the following questions:
1. What is CE and PLM? CE is concurrent engineering, which means to bring all relevant
Aspects of the orgsnizatioo to gerther for product offerings. PLM is Product Life Cycle
Management, which deals with the beginning, life and end of the products offerrings.
2. What is the difference between CE and PLM? CE deals with the product offering, PLM deals
with the costs associated with the product offering.
3. What is green sustainable PLM? Green sustainable product lifecycle management is
Being aware of environmental effects of production, use, and disposal of the products with an
emphasis on managing the resources, wastes involved with products as they are reused,
recycled, and remanufactured; instead of ending up in a landfill.
4. What is digital design & manufacture and why is this such a huge opportunity?
This is the use of CAD & CAM throughout the process. It allows the organization to eliminate
Waste, and save time & money.
5. How is digital design integrated with digital manufacturing in PLM?
This is the use of CAD & CAM throughout the process.
6. What is frontloading, and why is it critical to understand this process?
Frontloading is the process planning and design up front as opposed to the end of the process
through prototyping and other concepts. This critical step early in the design phase will enable
the company to lower cost; compared to doing it later in the design process.

7. Read Chapters 1, 2 and 3 of the 3DeBook. Find 5 questions in EACH of these Chapters and
answer them. Each answer should be min. 3-4 sentences long, but it's really up to you if
you want to write more... and even add figures, photos, etc. You are free to explore.

Chapter 1
Q1.3: Why is it important to create and offer 'quality product', 'quality process', 'quality service'?
This is the key aspect to product and company success, as has been the case with Toyota.
Q1.4: Try to explain why working in the digital domain first can save huge amounts for all involved...
By proving product digitally there is no wasted material, reduced costs and flexibility.
Q2.1: What is TQM in the product, process, service system design context?
Total quality management (TQM) the process of improving processes, products, and services
throughout the organization to satisfy customer expectations. To achieve this there must
be open communication throughout the customer and the. TQM needs to be clearly
defined continuously measured and improved.
Q2.2: What is TQC? Total Quality Control (TQC) managed through SPC statistical process control.
The process of examining products for defects.
Q2.3 List, and explain the various dimensions of design quality, with examples.

Chapter 2
Q1.1: Organizations depend on their customers, and therefore should understand their current and
future needs, as well as should meet customer requirements, and strive to exceed customer
expectations. What does this quality principle mean, and how could you implement it?
Q1.2: Leaders establish unity of purpose and direction of the organization. They should create and
maintain the internal environment in which people can become fully involved in achieving
the organization's objectives. What does this quality principle mean, and how could you
implement it? What are the key characteristics of quality leaders?
Q2.1: Identifying, understanding and managing interrelated processes as a system contributes to
the organization's effectiveness and efficiency in achieving its objectives. What does this
quality principle mean, and how could you implement it in a product / process design
framework?
Q2.3: The continual improvement of the organization's overall performance should be a permanent
objective of the organization. What does this quality principle mean, and how could you
implement it?
Q2.5: Even if an organization and its suppliers are interdependent, a mutually beneficial relationship
enhances their ability to create value. What does this quality principle mean, and how could you
implement it?
Chapter 3
Q3.1 What are three of Demings 14 Point?
- Institute modern methods of training and education on the job.
- Focus on leadership and supervision to help people to do a better job.
- Eliminate fear. Encourage open, honest, constructive communication between the
workforce, the management, the designers, and all key roles.
Q3.2 Name the key points of Design for Manufacturing Strategy.
- Market and design strategy for the product as well as the processes involved.
- Clearly understand all processes involved from market analysis, customer requirements to
- design, manufacture/assembly, test, packaging and maintenance.
Q3.3 List three basic rules for component, product and manufacturing/assembly system design
used by the Concurrent Engineering team?
Q3.4 Define Sustainability: an eco-friendly state, or process that can be maintained over time, for a
very long time.
Q3.5 What are some of the visible benefits to reducing the number of parts in any product design
Inventory holding costs of parts and sub-assemblies (e.g. fasteners).
Reduced:
Work-in-progress inventory and material handling costs.
Manufacturing and assembly costs.
Maintenance costs, the Cost of testing, quality control,
Cost of reuse, recycling and remanufacturing, and others.
