CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Nowadays, it has been noticed that most of the youth are engaging to internet. As a

result, youth are referred as digital natives. The term refers to those who were born in

the presence of internet or those who are exposed to the so called social media. Thus, using

the social media and any form of internet applications becomes usual among todays

generation.

Some people believe that the internet has a positive impact on the student by

providing a variety of resources for their studies. However some people also strongly

disagree with that claim since internet brings some negative effects on the students such as

they become addicted and rely too much on internet with homework.

At first, many students are becoming addicted to the internet. They spend more and

more time on playing computers games or just surfing the net without particular reasons.

The time they spend on study is automatically reduced, which in turns cause the lower

academic achievements. Moreover, some of them go to the extreme, becoming serious

internet addicts and they even refuse to go to school as they cannot escape from the trap of

internet.

Second, internet influences the students from not doing their home works or

assigned tasks by their own. Students can obtain the informations that they need with a

great ease by simply clicking the button. However, this great accessibility to any kind of

information can be abused. For instant, when students are given an assignment, what many

of them do is just go on the website or the blogs where the seemingly needed information

is posted, and simply drag, copy, and paste it without looking the content of what they
2

copy. Some students even just download the material which some else has already done

and submit it as if were their work.

It is clear that internet has serious effect to students. For one thing, students are so

in danger to becoming addicted to internet. Additionally, young students should use

internet with great cautions to prevent any harmful effects.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

According to the study of the Journal of Psychology and Behavioural Science

Sushma Bagavadi Ellore, Suman Niranjan and Ulysses j. Brown, III (2014), the internet is

an integral part of most students of more than 90 percent of the students have access to the

internet. Addiction to the Internet and online social network sites can affect a students

academic performance both positively and negatively. Controlled use of the Internet can

have positive influence on students academic performance. Students influence of the

Internet usage, Facebook usage, online media usage, polychronicity and students interest

on their academic performance and face-to face communication skills in studied. Eight

scales that includes Internet usage, Facebook usage, online media usage for education,

online media use for non-education, polychronicity, academic performance and face-to-

face communication are measured.

According to the study of Nidhi Kakkar, Jyoti Ahuja, and Preeti Dahiya (2015),

internet in becoming a widely accepted channel for information exchange and networking.

It is experiencing tremendous growth and development in its size and numbers of users all

over the world. The benefits of the internet have been widely researched and include

keeping in touch with friends, making vacation plans, managing finances, assisting with

educational needs etc. Despite the positive effects of internet, there is growing literature on

the negative effects of its excessive use.

According to the study of Elizabeth A. Clark, B.A and Deborah Evarhart, Ph.D.

(2008), there is currently an increased interest in the effect of internet use in the students

population; a group that may be particularly susceptible to problems related to online use
6

because of the accessibility afforded them on campuses and due to their developmental

stage of identity formation.

According to the study of Johannesburg (2012), the internet is a technology that has

become a big part of peoples daily living. Through its ability to act as a support medium

in the different functions for which people use it, the internet was introduced to academic

institutions as a tool to enhance students academic experience in the mid-1990s. Today,

the internet plays a major role in the classroom, from course materials being available

online to larger ranges of academic resources being a few clicks away, the influence of the

internet on campus is incontestably felt.

According to the study of Ashrish Kapahi, Choo Siow Ling, Sureswaran Ramadass,

Nibras Abdillah (2013), the internet started as a divine gift to the human society, it was

meant to enlighten the human society by transferring knowledge, making available all the

information needed for human wellbeing, growth and prosperity. But as the internet grew,

it created its own set of problems one of the key ones being internet addiction. According

to Dr. Jerald J. Block, from the Center for internet addiction, Internet Addiction affects

as many as one in the world. Block also defined internet addiction as a compulsive activity

involving excessive use, withdrawal and negative repercussions including social isolation,

lying, low achievement and fatigue. Internet addiction is surfing as a key problem,

particularly amongst the younger generation.

According to the study of KesarapornWanajak (2011), internet addiction (IA) is a

relatively new field of academic inquiry. Empirical studies suggest that IA, like other well

researched addictive behaviors, has an effect on many aspects of a persons life, including

academic/work performance, relationships, and physical and mental health (Goldberg,

7

1996; Young, 1996, 1998). Evidence of IA has been suggested by the finding that some

internet users spend increasingly longer periods of time online and experience withdrawal

symptoms when offline. Those preoccupied with Internet-related activities may neglect

exercise, family and social activities (kim et al., 2010 Nalwa and Anand, 2001; Kang, and

Yom, 2009; S. Yang & Tung, 2007; Young, 1998, 2004).

According to the study of Arumugam Balasubramanianand Amrita Vishwa

Vidyapeethem (2013), internet today is widely recognized not only as a means of

communication but also as a powerful tool. It is seen as the most influential and the most

important technology in this sense (Leivrouw2001: 22-23, Dickson 2000). Internet usage

among students involves not only the use of leisure time, but also their community

involvement and social networking. Student Communities are mow facing major social

issues like isolation, thus pulling down their cultural values by accessing the virtual sites

as well as pornography sites.

According to the study of Dr. Scott B. Wegner, Dr. Ken C Holloway, Edwin M.

Gartoon (1999), the practice of using technology to deliver coursework in higher education

has seen a veritable explosion. The use of technology has not only created new

opportunities within the traditional classroom but has also served to expand learning

experiences beyond the popular nation of classroom. Indeed, distance learning,

especially utilization of the Internet, is becoming a widely used delivery alternative at

universities nationwide. In many instance the change to an internet based delivery system

has been instituted with little or no consideration of the impact on student learning. The

role of technology in the delivery of instruction at schools has been truly explosive. While

relatively unheard of just ten years ago, a key word search of the internet today using
8

Internet-based distance learning yields literally hundreds of sites devoted to the subject.

Opportunities to receive coursework via the internet exist routinely at most schools while

the opportunity to pursue an entire degree program is becoming a reality at more and more

institutions worldwide. The prognostications made just a few short years ago, that the

Internet would soon be as common as the telephone or television as a means of

communication have rapidly become a reality. Indeed, use of internet to delivery of

distance of education is active at all levels of educational hierarchy and look to maintain a

general upsweep.

According to the study of Noreen Akhter (2013), internet is becoming a widely

accepted channel for information exchange and networking. It is experiencing tremendous

growth and development in its size and number of users all over the world. The benefits of

the internet have been widely researched and include keeping in touch with friends, making

vacation plans, managing finances, assisting with educational needs etc. Despite of the

positive effects of internet, there is growing literature on the negative effects of its

excessive use (Chou and Hsiao, 2000; Frangos and Frangos, 2009). Internet addiction is a

rather new research area, which has less than ten years history.

According to the study of Awais, Bilal, M Usman, M Waqas, Sehrish, the internet

was initially developed by the US Defense Department and was at one time only popular

within the research community. Its ability to share information across organizations and to

interact with people at low cost has gradually enticed other sectors to explore its use.

Today, the Internet has an impact on every facet of our life including business operation,

education, communication, entertainment, social activity, shaping and so on. Many

universities around the world are expanding their investment in information technology
9

(IT), and specifically the internet, and are actively promoting internet use. From the

students perspective, learning using online tool in multidimensional. It may entail a

multitude of variable such as prior student knowledge of IT, experience in its usage,

perception of IT usage, Computer competencies, and background demographics.

According to the study of Peter M. Ogedebe(2012), internet plays a fundamental

role in organizations and society. The basic fact justifies the information revolution that

has been taking place across the globe in recent times. The term Internet according to

Cawkell in Ogedebe (2004, p. 152) is a large computer network formed out of some

thousands of interconnected networks, and its supports a whole range of service such as

electronic, file transfer protocol, database access and many others. It is therefore not

surprising the success story behind the advent of internet. This is why today; the internet

has linked thousands of nations and enterprises across the world. Hence, the world which

appears physically large has been made to be too small by internet and reference to it as

global village.

According to the study of Dr. Mohammand Al Muhtadi, as technology grows, there

are many ways that it can be applied to different things. Education is no different. There

are many technological advances that have changed the world of education in the 21st

century. Knowing about these advancements and the impact they have on education around

the world can will show just how essential technology is to education. These different

technology uses is the class room have a vast impact on the overall education of students

around the world which will be shown. The impact for this technological advancement is

on more than just a grade school level though. Today just about any high school class that

a person could want to take can be done online. Many people earn a degree online today.
10

In fact in 2011, University of Phoenix gave out 6,000 online degrees. This is monumental

when you compare it to other schools. For instance, Arizona State University, which is

known for having a high number of students, only gave out 2,075 degrees that year, all of

which were from on campus education. This has become the ideal way for many people to

earn an education. Single parents and those who must work and go to school find that this

form of education is more suited for their needs. This is because it can easily be worked

around the schedule of the students. While there are times that a student may need to be

online, such as for required online discussion boards, tests or submitting the assignment,

overall it is easier to fit into ones schedule than driving to a classroom at a specific time.

According to the study of Camilla Brndstm (2011), the internet plays a significant

role in the lives of young people today. Previous research points to advantages as well as

disadvantages of the use of the internet in a formal educational context. The aim of the

current study was to investigate the influence of the use of the internet on planning and

instruction. Five upper secondary school teachers were interviewed face-to-face. Five

recurrent themes were identified in the interview data: General Opinions on and experience

of the Internet, attitudes to teaching and learning, opinions on the use of the Internet as a

planning and teaching resource, effects of the use of the internet on students and teachers,

and drawbacks of the use of the Internet in the school. It was found that the teachers think

that the internet is a valuable source of information and an important additional teaching

tool. The Internet can e.g. motivate the students, make teaching more fun, and allow

variation in teaching. Four major drawbacks of the use of the Internet were reported by the

teachers, viz. Students cheating, unreliable information, technical problems and students

extracurricular activities during lessons.

11

According to the study of Mr.K.V.Deore (2012), internet is defined as a collection

of various services and resources. Although, many people still think e-mail and World

Wide Web as the principle constituents of Internet, there is a lot more in store than e-mail,

chat rooms, celebrity web sites and search engines. Internet makes easier to teach nay

content using LCD player it become visually as well as auditory effect. It has also become

the best business tool in the modern scenario. Today, Internet has brought a globe in a

single room. Right From getting news across the corner of the world to accessing

knowledge resources to shopping, everything is at your fingertips. Internet has tremendous

potential and a lot to offer in terms of services. However, like every single innovation in

science and technology, Internet has its own advantages and disadvantages.

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary of the study, the conclusions drawn from the

findings and the recommendations suggested by the researchers.

SUMMARY

The general objective of the study was to describe the positive and negative

effects of internet to the secondary students of Pontevedra Christian School, Inc. S.Y

2017 2018.

Specifically, it sought to answer the following specific questions:

4. What is the demographic profile of secondary students of Pontevedra Christian School,

Inc. Pontevedra, Capiz in terms of:

a. Age

b. Sex

c. grade level/section,

d. daily allowance;

5. What is the extent of positive effects of internet to the students of Pontevedra Christian

School Inc., Pontevedra, Capiz?

6. What is the extent of negative effects of internet to the students of Pontevedra Christian

School Inc., Pontevedra, Capiz?

The respondents of the study are 188 selected secondary students of Pontevedra

Christian School. The instrument used in data gathering was survey questionnaire.
21

All collected data were subjected to computer processed statistical analysis using

the frequency count and percentage.

The following were the findings of the study:

The respondents have the mean age of 14.62, which implies that their ages are just

right for typical secondary students. As to their sex, females (111 or 59.04 %) outnumbered

the males (77 or 40.96%). Most (30 or 15.96%) of the respondents came from grade 10

Philip, while grade 7 James had the least number of respondents (18 or 9.57%). Almost (87

or 46.28 %) of the respondents have 51.00 100.00 daily allowance, (80 or 43.09%) of

the respondents have 1.00 50.00 daily allowance, (11 or 5.85%) of the respondents

have 101.00 150.00 daily allowance, (5 or 2.66%) of the respondents have 151.00

200.00 daily allowance and (5 or 2.66%) of the respondents have 500.00 and above daily

allowance.

As an entire group, the respondents rated their positive effects of internet as very

influential having the mean of 4.01.

As an entire group, the respondents rated their negative effects of internet as very

influential having the mean of 3.69.

CONCLUSIONS

Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusions were arrived at:

The secondary students of Pontevedra Christian School was dominated by females

whose mean age is 14.62. This implies that their ages are just right for typical secondary

students. Their daily allowance ranges from 51.00 100.00.

22

There is a very influential positive effect of internet usage among the respondents.

This implies that using the internet may help enhance the academic performance of the

respondents as it allows them to have an easy access to information.

However, there is also a very influential negative effect of internet usage among

the respondents. This implies that since there is an easy access to information, the

respondents may tend to use their internet skills to harm others as to commit cyber-

bullying.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Based on the findings and conclusions of the study, the researchers have drawn

the following recommendations:

1. The school may provide internet services among its students, specifically in the

library which can be used by the students during their research works. However,

policies on its utilization may be provided as precautionary measures that will

result to the positive academic performance of the students.

2. The teachers and the parents shall guide their students and children on the proper

usage of the internet which is beneficial to enhance their academic performance.

3. Similar studies shall be conducted to other colleges to affirm or reject the findings

of this study.
