Before the beginning the world modern era, less developed societies were dominated by far superior

and greater societies in terms of economic, resources, political, military, technology and others. Those
superior powers control the less developed people in a form of colonization. Colonizers implement
varying forms of influence and control necessary to attain their end-goals. The Pacific islanders have
been colonized by mainly British and minor part are colonized by Indonesia. The indigenous suffers
and experience the abuse of those in power positions that their very own resistance to higher authorities
further complicate and deteriorate their states. This essay will discuss forms of resistance against
colonial powers and recorded results of such movements that were implemented by those who applied
power relation within the Pacific.
Initially, the West Papuan people experience the brutal form of colonization within their very own
lands. In an attempt to gain their own independence against the exploiting-Indonesians, they undergone
certain strategies in a hope to gain their freedom on their own. For instance, among their possible
actions they make themselves to become more adepts in establishing networks of supports for their
mutual interest. Also they manage to make themselves a group of pro-independence for advocating
their Separatism while Selpius Bobii an independence-related activism leader promote any activities
that lessen the forceful grasp of Indonesians military force have upon them (Web-Gannon, 2013). The
indigenous people of West Papuan people faced hardship unimaginable under the hands of Indonesians
which is the motivating force under their every actions in pursuing their own freedoms.
The Indonesians in return for maintaining their form of power and control over the local West Papuan
people implement further military force. The Indonesians military force further apply physical force
over the locals that impacts negatively the indigenous people effort for attaining their own freedoms.
For instance, the Indonesian rule of their explicit government policies advocates both slow-motion
genocide and genocide that involves the killings, serious bodily and mental harm, forcibly transferring
children of the group, imprisonment and others threating courses of actions (Web-Gannon, 2013). The
main goal of the Indonesians was to establish and maintain complete control over the West Papuan
people for the sole control of locals lands resources.

Secondly, the Indians immigration to Fiji was solely motivated on a basis on freeing themselves form
the indenture state that they faced after the conclusion of the 10 years industrial residence within their
own country. These people were industrious people that were all trying to alleviate the forces of debts
that is the convention of money that is also the creation of the colonizing powers during these times. In
their labors to overcome their debts, many obstacles and manipulations occurred that causes them to
face the leading authorities. For instance, noticing the subtle manipulations of the British colony they
become more difficult in providing their cooperation and become unmanageable to the point that, they
resist any coercive process issued against one of their numbers (Lal, 2000). During their labors, many
of songs been derived that further shows the pain, stress and anxiety they experienced indicating the
negatives influences of debts toward their people.
The British colonization in return further manipulate the migrators via applying the subtle force of
money itself. The British colony knows the short labor need that is caused by the prohibition of
commercial employment of the Fijians by the accumulating costs of the Polynesian labor trade hence
the need for additional is paramount. The first step the British colony takes is facilitating the travel of
indentured Indians to Fiji that is aided by Sir Arthur Gordon and after that they apply subtle ways for
indebted migrators to hardly clear their debts. For instance, the territorial aristocracy British land
policy causes the land lords to rack-rented and evicted their tenants that further put more financial
burden upon migrators whom apparently have no land on Fiji (Lal, 2000). The Indians instead of
finding financial stability from their current labors, it further put financial hardship as the result of their
migration from their home land to here at Fiji during British colony.
Additionally my Kiribati natives resistance toward colonization was slight due to the seductive form of
lifestyle the wholesalers brought into to Kiribati. The wholesalers were both academic and salesmen
who are adept in persuasion especially in attainting the good favors of natives people who starts the
colonization process. Even though Britishs salesmen cannot communicate with Kiribati people but
they understand the language of pleasure, easy with luxurious life plus and of course language of fear
and authority. For instance, previous told stories about sailors arrivals were faced with physical
resistance by my ancestors whom gradually succumbed to them due to their bartering system between
them. What the sailors have to offer such as clothing, tools, tobacco, medicine and others improved my
ancestors life in every way that eventually every new arrivals sailors were welcomed with respect and
celebration (Sabatier, 1977). Whalers may not starts directly the colonization but they implicitly pave
the way for it.
Lastly but not the least, one notable exploitation of colonization on Kiribati is of Banaba Island Story.
A story that is could be named as the Phosphate Story. From what am aware of, The British Colony
were extracting large amount and transport it to their own country and sell it to make more financial
earning from it while the natives are unaware and even have do not any positive spillover from such
transactions. The colonies may have positive intentions toward indigenous people but more negative
effects of their activities are experienced by local people.
To conclude, it is evident that Colonization is the process practiced by those with more and superior
knowledge and power to control weak countries. The natives experienced many negative outcomes of
such process when they resist toward their control. Their movement against colonization further
brought more unfavorable circumstances to the point that frustration is all what natives experience.
The colonizers with their superior power exploits the locals and only concerns with their objectives that
even neglecting the indigenous people and local resources is no major concern. It may be said that
colonizing is negative in nature in the local peoples perspectives, however it be noted as well that it
sparks the modern era for the Pacific people. Thus it can be concluded that the people with power rule
over the less powerful as evident from these three readings with the locals having very little capacity to
overcome it.
