1 Introduction
This document describes the commissioning process for the WALKair™ wideband
Wireless Local Loop (WLL) system. The commissioning process should be performed
after system installation according to the Installation document. The commissioning
process is required prior to system operation.

1.1 Requirements
The commissioning process is performed using a Local Craft Terminal connected to
BU-BSs and BU-TSs via RS232 interface. In order to perform the commissioning
process, you will need the following:
• PC platform as local craft terminal
• Serial cable, TP4 wires, flat with RJ45 to a 9-pin D-type or 25-pin D-type
connectors. Refer to Tab. 1.1 for the cable pin-out.
• Communications software (e.g., ProComm, PCPlus).

1.3 Components Sensitive to Electrostatic Discharge

All units contain components, which are sensitive to

electrostatic discharge!

Fig. 1.1 ESD Symbol

All units that carry this sign contain components sensitive to electrostatic discharge
(ESD); i.e. the necessary ESD regulations must be complied with.
If units carrying the ESD symbol are packed or unpacked, handled, extracted or
inserted, grounding bracelets must always be worn. This ensures that the units are not
damaged.
For this purpose an appropriately labeled grounding socket for the grounding-bracelet
plug is provided on the right-hand securing flange on every subrack.

ESD

Fig. 1.2 ESD Jack

Every PC board has in addition a grounding edge round the outside which is connected
to the "ground" of the plug-in unit and by which the board can be handled. Contact with
the component terminals, the contacts of the SIEDECON connecting strip and the
conductor tracks must be avoided (even if the grounding regulations for personnel
have been adhered to).
When fitting and removing units as part of installation and maintenance work, the
attached insertion and extraction aids must be used.
Units located in shielded, closed housings are protected in all cases.
European standard EN50082-1 provides information on the proper handling of
components, which are subject to electrostatic discharge.

process is comprised of the following steps:
− Attaching the Local Craft Terminal
− Setting Operating Frequency
− Setting IF Cable Gain
− Registering the Terminal Stations
− Defining Services
− Setting Date and Time
− Setting System Synchronization Source
− Enabling the BU

2.1 Attaching the Local Craft Terminal

Attach the Local Craft Terminal to the BU-BS LCI port, using an available COM port
with the following settings:
• 9600 bps baud rate
• no Parity
• 8 data bits
• 1 stop bits.
The LCI software embedded in the BU RAM assumes a VT100 terminal compatible,
RS232 interface.
After making the LCI connection, run the communications software (e.g., ProComm).
Make sure to set the terminal type to ANSI in the communications software.
While the BU-BS is initializing, a number of messages are displayed on the Craft
terminal.
After the initialization has completed, the main menu, shown in Fig. 2.1 and Fig. 2.2,
is displayed on the Craft Terminal screen.
In order to re-display the LCI menu screen, press = <Enter>.
The following lines, shown in Fig. 2.1, are attached to each LCI screen. Each of these

4 Completing the Process

The remainder of the commissioning process at the TS side is carried out automati-
cally by the system. These actions include the following:
− Automatic TS Scanning
− Automatic Distance Measurement
− Equalizer Calibration
− Air Time Slot Allocation
− Service Enabling

4.1 Automatic TS Scanning

The TS starts scanning the RFU for available frequencies, searching for a downlink
transmission (looks for signal above certain threshold):
• When received signal strength is above a certain threshold, the TS tries to
synchronize.
• Upon success, the TS waits for Customer ID Search message, with its customer ID,
in the downlink.
• If the TS customer ID does not appear in the downlink (it appears only if the TS
administrative status was enabled), the TS continues scanning.
• If TS customer ID appears in the downlink, TS stops scanning and waits for EOC
allocation.

4.2 Automatic Distance Measurement

Distance measurement is required in order to calibrate the airframe, for synchronizing
all TS with the Base Station time base. TS is not allowed to transmit before distance
measurement is completed.
• Upon EOC allocation, the TS sends distance measurement sequence, in minimal
power, in order to measure the TS distance from the BS.
• If there is no response from the BS, the TS increases the transmission power.
• If the BS receives the pulse, it takes control of the power calibration, in order to
calibrate all TS to optimal receiving power. At the same time, it continues with
distance measurements.
• Upon completion, the BS sends the TS its distance information, and the TS
calibrates the transmission according to this distance.

4.3 Equalizer Calibration

TS transmits a series of known training sequence that the modem creates. The BS
calibrates the equalizer according to this sequence.

4.4 Air Time Slot Allocation

The Base Station allocates time slots to the TS according to the TS registration order
and service.

4.5 Service Enabling

The BU-BS sends the TS its parameter settings (such as services, etc.) and allocates
time slots according to the service type (Full E1, Fractional E1, etc.). The TS is now
allowed to transmit traffic.
