The transformer under test must be completely de-energized and isolated from the system.
Follow your own company rules, policies, and government regulations to ensure safety of personnel and
property. The transformer and the M5300 test instrument must share a common ground or earthing point.
Preparing the Transformer
All bushings and windings should be disconnected from any connecting bus and/or insulators. Terminals not under test
should be isolated and floating unless otherwise specified.

Start up the Doble SFRA software. Ensure the cables are connected to the test set following the color coded BNC
connections. A test lead integrity check may be performed if required: see the Doble SFRA User Guide for details.
Connecting Leads to the Transformer and Running Tests
When running a test on a transformer winding, for example H1-H0, attach the Red Lead to the H1 bushing and the Black
Lead to the H0 bushing, as shown in Figure 4.
Note
When connecting leads to a transformer,
ensure that you attach the lead grounds to
a stud or bolt at the base of the bushing,
and that good electrical contact is
established and maintained.
Changing tap position or DETC position or removing core ground connections will give different SFRA results. This means that
where previous results are available, measurements must be made in a manner consistent with those previous results.
Care of Equipment
Follow the points below to take care of your equipment.
Keep test set and test leads in good order.
Do not pull on test leads as they may break.
Support the weight of the test leads where necessary by use of cable ties or similar.
Cables are made of co-ax and have a 2 minimum bend radius (don't bend cable too tightly.)
If a clip repair is necessary through field damage, keep the center conductor separate from the shield.
Typical Results
Correct use of the test set and test leads will result in measurements similar to those given in Figure 5. These plots give the
results for all three phases of an individual transformer.
Test Connections
Make sure good electrical connections are made at bushing terminals and at the base of bushings; clean, file or wire brush
connection points if necessary.
When making short circuit measurements, ensure all three phases are solidly shorted: 1 to 2, 2 to 3, and 3 back to 1.
Test connections are given here for some common transformer designs; red lead is first of the two named terminals. For
further designs, refer to the Doble Test Connections Guide.
