Garden in a Garden: Geoffrey Bawa and His

"Homeopathic Design Method"

1)[1]

[ ] Jin Qiuye ABSTRACT

Based on the study of Geoffrey Bawa's designs, this

paper highlights that Bawa's professional career started

and ended with garden representing his own aesthetic
( 100044) life. He seemed to narrow down the concern of modern
architecture on the one hand, giving away the Western
tradition of enlightenment and the ideal of utopian cities,
2017/01/25
and expand the knowledge of modern architecture on

(16YJAZH024) the other, discovering a system of material culture that
speaks to traditional aesthetic life with an emphasis of
bodily perceptions. As such he developed a homeopathic
design method in accordance with topography in general

terms, embodying a superior sense of environmental ethics

through precise material construction and architectural

understandings with considerations of others based
on personal experiences. With his mundane poetry
differing from Western abstract knowledge and pursuit

for geometrical prototype writ large, Bawa inherit the

pragmatic nature and simplistic formal language of modern
architecture.

The Courtyard of Geoffrey Bawa

[ ] Dong Yugan ABSTRACT

This paper attempts to assess the strengths and weaknesses

of three courtyard designs of Geoffrey Bawa using his
3
own architectural criteria, i.e. proper construction through
( 100871) landscape. It also uses the perceptive method suggested
3 by Bawa to scrutinize the gains and losses of bodily
perceptions in the three courtyards.

ABSTRACT

This paper studies Geof frey Bawa's work s from a
perspective of design, with a particular emphasis on roof
amongst many architectural elements. It intends to reveal
a rational undercurrent from restrictions to connections in

architecture by examining the variation and development
of roofs in Bawa's works.

Architecture
is both a medium to express our understanding, critic and hope
of the world around us
and a medium through which we can
engage it, with our own imagination, courage, persistence, and
strategies

The Development on Design as Research in the View
of Environment-Behavior Research in the United
States

1, 2 ABSTRACT
[ ] Lian Fei
3
[ ] Song Yilin This paper conceptualizes the design philosophy of
"design as research" as the process to acquire new

knowledge from environment-behavior research. It
1 ( 150006) , reviews the combination of research and design in
2 different developing phases by studying several hallmark
( 150006) events of the development of architectural design in
3 3
the United States. Based on a model of knowledge of

architectural design on three levels, it elaborates on the
substantial content of design as research, intended to
2016/10/13
provide reference for the scientific and research-based
transformation of contemporary architectural design in

(20132302120050) China.
KEY WORDS

Deduction of Design Teaching: A Case Study of the
Architecture Building at Melbourne University

[ ] Ling Jie ABSTRACT

This paper contends for a special relation between

design teaching and the place of teaching. Except for this

( 210096) relation in general, the place of teaching can also function
as the source of knowledge and a on-site case for design
teaching. Taking the architecture building at Melbourne
2016/09/16 University as an example, it explores new topics and

thoughts of the present design of collegiate architecture

buildings based on an analysis of various modes of the
deduction of design teaching from an angle of multiple
logics.

Between Tradition and Innovation
An Analysis of the Design Process of the Extension of
Banca della Svizzera Italiana in Switzerland

1 ABSTRACT
[ ] Zhang Jie

[ ] Guo Liaohui This paper aims to reveal the design process of the
extension of Banca della Svizzera Italiana, Lugano through

an analysis of a succession of design sketches made by
1 the architect Giancarlo Durisch. It provides an example
2 of how the postwar modernist movement revised the
dogmatic concept of "function" in the face of the historical

environment to keep a balance between conservation

and innovation.

A Comparative Study on the Facilities for the Aged
Between China and the UK

[ ] Mu Jingyi ABSTRACT
[ ] Kang Jian This paper focuses on the comparative study on supply
policy, architectural space model and function of facilities

for the aged between China and the UK. It identifies the
methodological and conceptual differences between
( 150006) the two countries, caused by different values, lifestyles
and ageing processes. It concludes with suggestions

of diversification and rationalization of various types of
2016/11/04
facilities for the aged, an increase of small-scaled facilities,
deinstitutionalization of the spatial pattern, etc.

Synergetic System Design for Sustainable Architecture

Architectural Technology
of the Next Generation

[ ] Arno Schlueter ABSTRACT

[ ] Adam Rysanek 3fo r2 3 This paper summarizes three key design principles of
[ ] Han Dongchen the 3for2 concept, and testifies to the potentials of

sustainable buildings in tropical cities of high density by
3fo r2 an introduction of a 3for2 project at the United World
College of Southeast Asia in Singapore. As such, it argues
synergetic systems design needs to go beyond mere

energy efficiency, and synergetic strategies can provide
( 100084)
economic benefits over the building lifecycle by the
enhancement of spatial quality, design flexibility and

comfort of users.

An Acoustic Study of The Assessment Standards for
Green Buildings

[ ] Dai Jinghua ABSTRACT

[ ] Zhou Dian This paper contends for necessary improvements for
[ ] Zhang Dongdong the current calculation method of indoor noise in The

Assessment Standards for Green Buildings , and offers
an alternative based on delicate analysis and discussion.
According to the basic principles of green building design,
( 710049) it is a normal situation when windows are open, and

indoor noise should be assessed with external windows

open and they could be reduced with technological
2016/09/14 methods in green building design.

An Analysis of the Use of Air Conditioners in Summer
in Beijing

1 ABSTRACT
[ ] Liu Bin
1
[ ] Niu Runping 5 Based on the long-term field measurement of the use of air
2
[ ] Wei Shen conditioners in a residential area of five households in Beijing,

this paper analyzes the bulk of data and discusses indoor and
outdoor temperature, indoor humidity, personal preferences,
1 retention time of Indoor refrigeration capacity amongst other
( 100044) effects resulting from use of air conditioners. It identifies two

2 modes in extremities: the most energy saving one and the most

energy consuming one. By comparing with field measurement
of energy consumption, it contends that the actual energy
2016/11/22
consumption when air conditioners in use is much higher than
the most energy-saving mode, testifying to the possibilities to

reduce refrigeration capacity consumption by adjusting users

behaviors with remarkable significance.

Thermal Comfort of Office Buildings During Transitional
Seasons in Severely Cold Regions

[ ] Xing Kai ABSTRACT

[ ] Shao Yu Based on the field measurement of thermal comfort of an
[ ] Sun Huixuan office unit in the severely cold region during transitional

seasons, the paper uses subjective questionnaires with
M T S whom work in the building. Based on mean thermal
( 150006) PMV-PPD PMV sensation (MTS) derived from the questionnaires and the
correlation coefficient of PMV calculated by PMV-PPD
PMV-PPD
( 150006) model, it verifies the accuracy of the PMV-PPD model

of thermal comfort applied in office buildings in the
severely cold region. Through an analysis of regression,
2016/10/31
it quantifies the impact of air temperature and relative
(51578172) humidity on thermal comfort of office units.
