year, with only Research in Motion (46.2% growth) joining Apple in outperforming the industry.

Apple's share of the market continues to climb and is edging close to rival RIM, while market leader Nokia continues its slow decline
according to the latest data from market research firm Gartner.

The big winners in smartphone market share are Apple and RIM. Both companies had nearly 50 percent year-
over-year growth in unit sales, and both companies posted their highest share of the smartphone market. RIM is
doing well with 20.8 percent share, while Apple is quickly closing the gap between the two with 17.1 percent.
HTC managed a whopping 60.6 percent year-over-year growth in unit shipments, though the Taiwanese
company isn't going at anywhere near the pace that Apple is. The iPhone's higher margins and its fast-growing
sales volume are the factors that made Apple the most profitable mobile handset maker this past quarter as well.
(Apple's worldwide smartphone share reached 17 per cent as iPhone sales totalled 7 million units in
the third quarter of 2009 following the continued rollout of the iPhone 3GS in new countries. Its ASP
is holding steady and sales in the fourth quarter should be even stronger as Apple starts selling in
China, through one additional carrier in the UK, and in an additional 16 countries.

Overall, the mobile phone market experienced only 0.1% growth over the year-ago quarter, but
smartphones continued their strong performance, growing 12.8% year-over-year.

Apple's share of the smartphone market has fluctuated significantly since the device's 2007
introduction as purchasing patterns have been affected by the company's product release cycle,
seasonal variations in the industry, and introductions into new countries or wireless carriers. The
general trend, however, indicates that Apple continues to outperform its competitors in the mobile
phone industry as it builds market share in the fastest growing segment in the industry.)
However, smartphones—essentially pocket computers that on occasion are used to make phone calls—sold 33
million more units in 2009 over 2008. "In 2009, smartphone-focused vendors like Apple and Research In
Motion successfully captured market share from other larger device producers, controlling 14.4 and 19.9 per
cent of the worldwide smartphone market, respectively," said Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi in a statement.

Apple almost doubled its share of the smartphone market over the last year, up from 8.2 in 2008. Its 14.4 percent share is
enough to move it past Windows Mobile globally. Android had the biggest improvement year-over-year, though, posting a
seven-fold increase to 3.9 percent. RIM gained a few points by selling an extra 11 million Blackberrys year-over-year,
capturing 20 percent market share
