User Guide for MPICH2

installation on Windows
 1. Download the latest version of MPICH2 Windows (binary)

Connect to http://www.mcs.anl.gov/research/projects/mpich2/
Click on downloads
Select the [x86] or [x86 64] link of the stable release, depending on whether your Windows
Operating System is 32- or 64-bit

 If you dont know whether your OS is 32 or 64 bit, you may open the Control panel, select
the System item and then check the System type.

2. Install Mpich2
Double click MPICH2, then press Run button.

 Click on the Next button.

Select I Agree and click on the Next button.

 Click on the Next button.

Set the installation folder of MPICH2 and remember to select the Everyone in order to install
it for every user.

 Click on the Next button.

Click on the Close button.

 3. Upgrade the Windows Path (Windows 7) - for Windows XP see point 4

Open the Control panel and select the System item. Then click on Advanced system set-
tings.

 Select the Advanced tab, and then click on the Environment Variables button.

 Select the item Path and click on the Edit button, or simply double click on the item Path.

 Add the installation path of MPICH2 at the begin of field Variable value. Remember to use
a semicolon as separator.
If you installed the program in a different folder, upgrade the Path accordingly.
Then press Ok.

4. Upgrade the Windows Path (Windows XP)

Open Control panel and select the System item. Click on Advanced form and then on
Environment Variables.
Select the item Path and press on the Edit button or simply double click on item Path.
Insert the installation path of MPICH2 at the begin of field Variable value. Remember to use
a semicolon as separator if you installed the program in a different folder, upgrade the Path
accordingly then press Ok

5. Restart the machine

 6. Mpiexec configuration

Type mpiexec on a command prompt to check the installation.

 Register the Windows user to MPICH2 typing on a command prompt: mpiexec-register. You
will be asked a password. The password has to be the same that you use to login. If you dont
have any password or if you login with an empty password, you now have to set one.
N.B Please remember that when you change your login password you have to register again
to MPICH2.

If Windows Firewall asks you to add an exception for mpiexec, please click on Allow ac-
cess.

 7. Install the smpd service (Windows 7) - for Windows XP see point 8

Open a command prompt as administrator, by clicking on the Start button, then type cmd,
press the right button on the first result and select Run as administrator.

 Type the command: smpd -install. You should see an output like the this:

If smpd asks you a secret password or the smpd service does not work, please type the
following command on a terminal smpd -remove and repeat from point 8 of the registration
procedure.
If Windows Firewall asks you to add an exception for smpd click on the Allow access button.

 Type the command: smpd -status. You should see an output like the following:

8. Install the smpd service (Windows XP)

Open a command prompt.

Type the command: smpd -install.
If smpd asks you a secret password or the smpd service does not work, please type the
following command on a terminal smpd -remove and repeat from point 8 the registration
procedure.
If Windows Firewall asks you to add an exception for smpd, please click on the Allow
access button.
