Deflections Determined by Three-Moment Equation

Summary of key points

1. The three-moment equation can be applied at any three points in any beam. It will determine the relation among the moments at
these points.
2. The terms 6Aa/L and 6Ab/L refer to the moment diagram by parts resulting from the simply supported loads between any two
adjacent points described in (1).
3. The heights h1 and h3 from the equation

6A1 a1 6A2 b 2 h1 h3
M1 L1 + 2M2 (L1 + L2 ) + M3 L2 + + = 6EI ( + )
L1 L2 L1 L2

refer to the respective vertical distance of points 1 and 3 from point 2. The height h is positive if above point 2 and negative if below
it.

Problem 859
Determine the value of EI under P in Fig. P-859. What is the result if P is replaced by a clockwise couple M?

Solution 859

| h3 | = 3

6A1 a1 6A2 b 2 h1 h3
M1 L1 + 2M2 (L1 + L2 ) + M3 L2 + + = 6EI ( + )
L1 L2 L1 L2

h3
0 + 2(P b)(a + b) + 0 + 0 + 0 = 6EI (0 + )
b

6EI h3
2P bL =
b

EI h3 = 2P Lb /3
2
the negative sign indicates that point 3 is below point 2

Thus,
EI 3 = P Lb /3
2
answer

If P is replaced by a clockwise couple M

M1 = 0

M2 = M

M3 = M

h1 = 0

| h3 | =

6A1 a1 6A2 b 2 h1 h3
M1 L1 + 2M2 (L1 + L2 ) + M3 L2 + + = 6EI ( + )
L1 L2 L1 L2

h3
0 + 2(M )(a + b) + (M )(b) + 0 + 0 = 6EI (0 + )
b

6EI h3
2M L M b =
b

6EI h3
M (b + 2L) =
b

M b(b + 2L) = 6EI h3

EI h3 = M b(b + 2L)/6 point 3 is below point 2

Thus,
EI 3 = M b(b + 2L)/6 answer
