4 Basic requirements
4.1 Hazardous materials
Compliance with the regulations on hazardous materials according to SN 200-1 shall be ensured. Manufacturers who are not
bound by Directive 2010/75/EU can also use coats which contain solvents.

4.2 Component surfaces in stainless and acid-resistant steel

Component surfaces in stainless and acid-resistant steel are usually not provided with corrosion protection.
Annealing colours, annealing scale, dirt, dust, oil, grease, cooling lubricants etc. shall be removed from the component
surface by pickling and/or blast cleaning (e.g. with glass beads)..
Pipelines, vessels and pipe fastening elements in stainless and acid-resistant steel shall be pickled, blasted or brushed to
remove scale layers or annealing colours and to ensure the formation of a passivation layer. Scale and dross shall be
completely removed.
Annealing colours are acceptable up to colour scale brown; refer to DIN 25410:2012-07, Annex F (for information), annealing
colours 1 and 2.

4.3 Component surfaces in steel, cast steel and cast iron

Unless otherwise specified in the manufacturing documents, all surfaces in steel, cast steel and cast iron shall always be
provided with permanent corrosion protection as described in section 5.1.
To allow the tracing back of the various (base, intermediate and cover) coats, the coats shall be in different colours.
An exception applies to parts screw-fastened to and protruding into vessels, contact and functional surfaces on components
and to components intended for intermediate storage or for early shipment. These parts shall always be provided with
temporary corrosion protection as in section 5.2.
Note:
Contact or functional surfaces are surfaces of a component which act together with other component surfaces or which are
relevant for the function of the component. Contact surfaces and functional surfaces are surfaces produced either by
machining and/or by bright drawing.

4.4 Surface preparation

4.4.1 Preparation grade

The surfaces of the component to be coated shall be prepared according to DIN EN ISO 8501-3:2007-10 as follows:

P2 Thorough preparation: Most imperfections are remedied.

In addition to the specification made in DIN EN ISO 8501-1:2007-10, table 1, section 2.2, all workpiece edges shall at least be
free from burrs as described in SN 200-5.

4.4.2 Level of cleanliness

Before the coating system is applied to the component surface, annealing colours, rust, slag, rolling skin, mill scale, dirt, dust,
oil, grease, old paint, cooling lubricants etc. shall be removed from the surface.
Machined surfaces to be provided with permanent corrosion protection shall be cleaned from grease. Such cleaning can be in
the form of e.g. a phosphoric acid bath or by blasting, depending on what is needed for the coating system, and in complying
with the respective standard cleanliness level according to DIN EN ISO 12944-4:1998-07; see table 1.
For pipelines and vessels without manhole (no inspection opening), cleanliness level Be as in table 1 is required.
Pickling is followed by flushing and passivating. Pickling residues shall be removed by blowing out with compressed air.
For central and oil film bearings, water and compressed air systems, cleanliness level Sa 2 according to table is required.
Hydraulic tanks need cleanliness level Sa 3 according to table 1.

Notice:

Pickling and passivating shall not be carried out on:

- Piping made with precision steel tubes according to DIN EN 10305-1 to 6 which have undergone neither welding nor
heat-treatment (e.g. lines in conjunction with cutting ring couplings or similar methods, e.g. WALFORM, see SN 888).
- Piping on which welding or heat treatment is carried out with specific protection against oxygen from the air (e.g. by
means of forming gases) and on which no oxidation or buildup of scale has occurred.

4.4.3 Blast-cleaning abrasive

For blasting, the following or an equivalent metallic chill-cast cleaning abrasive with sharp-edged grain shall be used:

Blast-cleaning abrasive M/CI/G70 DIN EN ISO 11124:1997-10

When this abrasive is used, the specified centerline average roughness of Ra = 12,5 m shall not be exceeded.
In blast cleaning in continuous-flow systems or with abrasives other than those specified, the centerline average roughness of
Ra = 12,5 m shall be ensured.

4.5 Coating

4.5.1 Permanent corrosion protection

4.5.1.1 Prime coat

To avoid penetration of cooling lubricants in the material during machining, the surface shall always be provided with a prime
coat.
Depending on the degree of damage to the prime coat caused by finish-machining or welding, the prime coat shall be
repaired or newly applied. The weld areas shall be thoroughly cleaned to remove the alkaline or acid constituents of the filler
metals and to avoid their destructive effects.

After preparation of the component surface, the first prime coat shall be applied within 6 hours to avoid new formation of rust.
When the surface is prepared by pickling in a phosphoric acid bath, the coat shall be applied not earlier than after 48 hours to
avoid chemical changes of the coating material.

The external coats of follow-up spares, spares for hydrostatic oil film bearings, pipings and vessels shall be only in the form of
a prime coat according to table 2.

Pipings are not provided with internal coats. At the fitting ends of pipings 200 mm shall be left without corrosion protection
coat.

4.5.1.2 Cover coat

The cover coat shall be applied only after completion of assembly, functional testing or acceptance inspection of the machine
and if the prime coat has been properly applied.

Before final assembly, areas which are not accessible after assembling shall be provided with permanent corrosion protection
consisting of prime coat and top coat.

4.5.2 Temporary corrosion protection

Blast cleaned or pickled surfaces shall be cleaned before temporary corrosion protection is applied. To avoid rusting under
the coat, corrosion protection coats shall be applied only on dry surfaces.
Temporary corrosion protection of component surfaces shall be applied only after completion of assembly , functional testing
or acceptance inspection of the machine or components.
