Procedures:

Wash the pipette, Erlenmeyer flask and burette with distilled water. Rinse the pipette with a
few mL of ammonium iron (II) sulfate solution and rinse the burette with a few mL of potassium
permanganate solution, and then discard the washings. By using a funnel, fill the burette with
the potassium permanganate solution, KMnO4. Make sure that the part below the tap is filled
before adjusting to zero. By using a 10mL pipette bulb, fill the pipette with 25cm3 of 0.10
moldm-3 ammonium iron (II) sulfate solution, (NH4)2Fe(SO4)2 6H2O. Transfer the contents to
the conical flask. Read the initial volume from the calibration scale on the burette. This reading
and all other burette readings should be estimated to the nearest 0.01ml. Put the Erlenmeyer flask
on the white tile and start to titrate the iron (II) solution in the flask with the solution from
burette. Swirl the flask continuously and occasionally wash down the walls of the flask with
distilled water by using a wash bottle. The pinkish colour produced by the first drop of
excess KMnO4 solution signals the end point for the titration. Obtain the final volume reading
from the calibration scale on the burette. Repeat the titration process twice. The volume
of KMnO4 solution used should agree with the first titration within 0.25mL. Calculate the
average titre value and the exact concentration of the KMnO4 solution.

Precaution:
Rinse the pipette with ammonium iron (II) sulfate solution and the burette with potassium
permanganate solution to remove water present inside the pipette and burette to ensure that the
solutions will not diluted by the water in the process of titration. While filling the burette with
KMnO4, drain out enough so that the liquid level is just below the upper calibration mark and the
burette tip is full. Place eyes at the same level as the meniscus to obtain accurate readings.
