Jason Pagara, Arthur Villanueva
added to Pinoy Pride 42 in Cebu

Jason Pagara and Arthur Villanueva will be seeing action at
Pinoy Pride 42 in Cebu this September
Aside from the IBF light-flyweight headliner between Milan Melindo and Hekkie Budler,
and the IBF super-flyweight title eliminator between Johnriel Casimero and Jonas
Sultan, a number of exciting matchups have been added to the upcoming Pinoy Pride
42 card in Cebu this coming September.

Making his long awaited return to the ring will be number three-ranked WBO super-
lightweight contender Jason "El Nino" Pagara as he faces Ghana's Richmond
Djarbeng.

Pagara (40-2-0, 25 KO) will be eyeing his 14th straight victory, while former UBF African
welterweight champ Djarbeng (28-3-1, 22 KO) tries for his tenth consecutive victory.

Also, a pair of Pinoy former world title challengers collide, as "King" Arthur Villanueva
meets Richie "Magnum" Mepranum.

Villanueva (30-2-0, 16 KO), a former IBF super-flyweight and WBO bantamweight title
contender is coming off a loss to reigning WBO bantamweight king Zolani Tete and will
be looking to bounce back, while Mepranum (31-6-1, 8 KO) will look to halt a two-fight
losing skid.

ALA Boxing young guns Kevin Jake "KJ" Catara, Virgel "Valiente" Vitor, Kenneth
Gentallan, and Jeno Macapobre were also added to the stacked card.

Pinoy Pride 42 takes place on Saturday, September 16th at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino
in Cebu.

Mayweather and McGregor will

fight in smaller gloves
By ABS-CBN Sports on Aug 17, 2017 08:48 AM

By Tim Dahlberg, Associated Press
LAS VEGAS (AP) Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor got their wish to fight
in smaller gloves, but not before being chastised by a Nevada boxing official for using
the issue to hype their fight later this month.

Nevada boxing regulators on Wednesday gave the two fighters an exemption to a rule
requiring 10-ounce gloves for fights at 154 pounds, approving 8-ounce gloves for the
Aug. 26 bout. Representatives of both fighters appeared before the Nevada State
Athletic Commission to request the waiver.

Commissioners also approved veteran referee Robert Byrd as the third man in the ring
for the fight.

Commission Chairman Anthony Marnell said he was comfortable with the fighters using
smaller gloves, but unhappy that they used the issue to sell the fight on social media.
"I do not like the Nevada State Athletic Commission being used as a pawn in a social
media battle," Marnell said.

Under Nevada regulations, 10-ounce gloves are required in fights above 147 pounds
and the bout is set for 154 pounds. But Mayweather has worn 8-ounce gloves most of
his career, and McGregor has worn 4-ounce gloves in his UFC fights.

McGregor said the gloves will only speed up the end of the fight, which he earlier
predicted wouldn't last four rounds.

"I believe now that gloves are eight ounces I don't believe he makes it out of the second
round," McGregor said. "I do not see him absorbing the blows in the first two rounds."

Mayweather's promoter, Leonard Ellerbe, said his fighter is also more comfortable in
smaller gloves and would use them to stop McGregor.

"The fight is going to end in a knockout, I'm very confident," Ellerbe said. "And it will
probably be early."

McGregor will be in a boxing ring for the first time as a pro when he takes on
Mayweather, who is coming out of retirement for a fight that will make him tens of
millions of dollars. They will fight under boxing rules, which will be enforced by Byrd, a
veteran of many championship fights.

"The referee makes a big difference in this fight, which is the specific reason I chose
Robert Byrd," said Bob Bennett, the commission's executive director.

Commissioners also approved Burt Clements and Dave Moretti of the United States and
Italy's Guido Cavalleri as judges for the bout. McGregor's camp had asked for an
international judge among the three.

Byrd will be paid $25,000 for the bout, while the judges will make $20,000.

The glove issue took up much of the commission meeting, though in the end all voted in
favor of the smaller gloves. There was also discussion about the padding in the gloves,
with both sides agreeing to be bound by Nevada boxing inspectors approving the foam
padding.

Mayweather has fought 46 of his 49 fights with 8-ounce gloves, including his last six.
McGregor has never boxed before, but quickly agreed to Mayweather's challenge on
social media to fight in smaller gloves.

UFC chief Dana White echoed McGregor in saying the smaller gloves will make a
difference in the fight.

"It affects the fight big time," White said. "When we were in our original negotiations it
was something they would not even talk about. I don't know what changed but I'm glad
it did. It makes it so much more fun."
Commissioners said they struggled with making an exception to regulations in place
since 2006, but decided to approve the waiver because of the unusual nature of the
event.

"The fight is not normal," said commissioner Sandra Morgan.

John Hornewer, an attorney for Mayweather, said the unbeaten boxer would likely not
be at the 154-pound limit at the fight weigh-in anyway.

"He'll be 150 pounds. That's his best weight and there's no reason to put on extra
weight," Hornewer said.

A McGregor representative said his fighter has been about 160 pounds in training camp
and would likely enter the ring somewhere around that weight after making the 154-
pound limit the day before.

GAB, DOH agree on free medical

examinations for professional
boxers
By ABS-CBN Sports on Aug 16, 2017 12:46 PM
Save

According to the latest statistics from the Games and
Amusements Board, there are 1,054 registered professional
boxers in the Philippines.
Some good news from the world of Philippine boxing, as the Department of Health
(DOH) and the Games and Amusements Board (GAB) have signed a Memorandum of
Agreement (MOA) to offer free medical examinations for applicant and professional
boxers in selected DOH-accredited hopitals all across the Philippines.

The MOA was signed on Tuesday, August 15th.

Depending on the need or situation, the coverage includes neurological tests, MRI and
CT scans, ECG, X-Ray, Hepatitis screening, drug testing, complete blood counts,
urinalysis, and others.
The MOA also states that additional services such as eye exams, HIV screening, and
neurological clearance may also be provided to boxers who are competing for world
championships, should the need arise.

DOH secretary Paulyn Ubial confirmed that the budget will come from the DOH's
medical assistance fund.

With around 1,054 professional boxers in the Philippines according to the latest data
recieved from GAB, this breakthrough will be a big help, provided that not a lot of these
professional pugilists are well off, and as GAB Chairman Baham Mitra pointed out, the
battery of tests required by these prizefighters can prove costly.

Aside from the medical requirements, GAB Chairman Mitra is also appealing to the
Department of Tourism to help the country's boxers by waiving their travel tax, have
shorter cues in Immgration, and allow one representative from the Philippine Embassy.

This will also help greatly, given that many of the country's professional boxers also
compete outside of the Philippines.

Pinoy boxers Johriel Casimero,

Jonas Sultan engage in social

Well, this is interesting. (Photo from Edito Villamor on Twitter:

Pinoy Pride 42 this coming September in Cebu is shaping up to be one of the most
exciting cards of the year, with IBF light-flyweight champion Milan Melindo defending his
championship against South Africa's Hekkie Budler in the main event.

Another highly-anticipated matchup however, is the co-main event, a super-flyweight

title eliminator match between former world champion Johnriel Casimero and ALA
Boxing up-and-comer Jonas Sultan. The winner gets a shot at reigning IBF super-
flyweight king Jerwin Ancajas.

With such a big prize at stake, it looks like the two Pinoys can't wait to get at each
other.

In a post from ALA Boxing head coach Edito Villamor, Casimero and Sultan have
already engaged in a little social media banter.

The photo on the left is Casimero flexing and showing off his physique for the fight, with
the caption "Homanda ka na..."

The photo on the right, appears to be a response in jest from Sultan, which shows the
ALA boxer with a pair of fake shades and fake tattoos on, obviously taking shots at
Casimero's ink. The post is accompanied by the caption "Nakahanda na!!!!"

While this is likely just some good-natured banter between the two, it still surely makes
for an interesting build-up for to fight.

in Cebu.

Gavin and Joe Maloof are so confident Floyd Mayweather Jr. will beat Conor McGregor
that they bet $880,000 on it.

And if the Maloof brothers are big winners along with Mayweather on Aug. 26, they are
giving the proceeds of their whopping wager to charity.

The wealthy entrepreneurs and former Sacramento Kings owners revealed their
extraordinary bet to The Associated Press on Sunday, two days after they placed the
wager at the South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The bet is thought to be the
biggest yet made on the fight, which is expected to be Vegas biggest spectacle in
recent years.

The Maloofs will make a $160,000 profit if Mayweather a minus-550 favorite Friday
remains unbeaten against McGregor, the UFC champion making his pro boxing
debut.

Mayweather promoter tired of talk

about ticket sales

LAS VEGAS (AP) Sixty-million dollars sounds pretty good to Leonard Ellerbe.

Dressed dapper in a white shirt and slacks, topped with a navy pinstriped blazer, the
CEO of Mayweather Promotions flashed an occasional smile while addressing the
media Thursday at Mayweather Boxing Club.

That was until he was questioned about slow ticket sales for the upcoming fight
between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor on Aug. 26 at T-Mobile Arena.

"I'm actually tired of hearing that question," Ellerbe said, as the smile disappeared.
"Right now, we have over 60 million dollars in the box office. What part of that remotely
looks like ticket sales are slow? This isn't a damn Rolling Stones concert. That's the
only thing that sells out in seconds. We're talking about tickets that go from $500 to
$10,000. That's an expensive ticket."
As of Thursday evening, a general search for two tickets on Ticketmaster's website
showed 536 pairs available, ranging anywhere between $1,682.50 to $35,010.09 per
ticket.

And with thousands of seats still available, and the fight two weeks out, some believe
the next sporting event that will sell out in that venue will be a Vegas Golden Knights
game, when the newest NHL expansion team opens the 2017-18 season. Critics also
believe with some second-tier seats carrying a five-figure price tag, the pay-per-view fee
of $99.95 seems like a bargain.

"We're going to blow past our own record of $72 million; this fight is massive," Ellerbe
said.

Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao's "fight of the century" saw live gate receipts produce
more than $71 million in revenue at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, easily surpassing
the previous live gate record of $20 million, for Mayweather-Canelo lvarez.

Mayweather reiterated Ellerbe's thoughts.

"We're doing crazy numbers, forget what you all (are) hearing. We're doing crazy
numbers," Mayweather said. "Our fight is doing unbelievable numbers. The pay-per-
view numbers are going to be unbelievable and we will have a sold-out crowd. I'm not
worried about that."
