Developmental Lesson Plan

Teacher Candidate: Kayla Kish Date: Day 2

Group Size: Whole Class Allotted Time 45 min Grade Level 3rd

Subject or Topic: The Moons Surface

Common Core/PA Standard(s):

S3.D.3.1.2

Describe the predictable patterns of change that occur over time in the observable shape of the
Moon.

3.3.3.B1 -Relate the rotation of the earth and day/night, to the apparent movement of the sun,
moon, and stars across the sky. Describe the changes that occur in the observable shape of the
moon over the course of a month.

Learning Targets/Objectives:
The students will demonstrate their knowledge of how the moon developed craters
with 90% accuracy.
The students will develop testable predictions using the inquiry sheet with 100%
accuracy.

Assessment Approaches: Evidence:

1. The inquiry sheet 1. The students will fill out the inquiry sheet
2. Surface worksheet and will hand it in to be checked.
3. Picture definition 2. The students will match the correct picture
. and name to the definition. This will be
handed in.
3. The students will be given a packet of the
pictures. They will write the definitions of the
object next to the corresponding picture.

Assessment Scale:
The students will fill out the inquiry sheet as they do the experiment. They will make
predictions, and then will test their predictions to see if they are correct.
The students will complete their surface worksheet and then hand it in to be checked
for correctness.
The students will complete their picture definition packet.

Subject Matter/Content:
Prerequisites:
What the moon is.
What an inquiry sheet is and how to fill it out.
Key Vocabulary:
Moon: the natural satellite of the earth, visible (chiefly at night) by reflected light from
the sun.
Crater: Large circle-like indents in the moons surface caused by an explosion or
meteoroids and asteroids impacting it.
Maria: Large dark spots on the moon cause by ancient volcanic eruptions.
Asteroid: A small rocky body orbiting the sun.
Meteorite: A small rocky body in the solar system. Debris from asteroids and comets.
Content/Facts:
The students should know that meteoroids and asteroids create craters on the moons
surface.
The maria on the moons surface is the dark spots on the moon. They were created
from the lava drying.

Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies:
To introduce the moons surface, we will play the game two truths one lie. The
teacher will tell the students 3 statements. Two of the statements will be true, and one
of them will be a lie. Two rounds of the game will be played.
Development/Teaching Approaches
Discussing the introduction:
1st round:
o The moon has a light gray shade to it. (True)
o The moon has a dark gray shade to it. (True)
o The moon has green on it. (False)
2 round:
nd

o We can live on the moon. (False)

o We can see the moon from Earth. (True)
o The moon is smaller than the Earth. (True)
Discussing the picture definition packet:
The students will be given a packet of the pictures. The students will also be given
definitions that have been previously cut out. As we go through the pictures the
students will glue the correct definition to the corresponding picture.
This will be done together on the Doc Cam.
First, the teacher will show the students a zoomed in picture of one of the objects that
are listen above. She will ask the class if they know what it is, or if they think they
would like to make any educated guesses. Once the students get a chance to share their
ideas the teach will pull up a zoomed out picture of the object. Next to the object the
students will glue the correct definition next to the picture. This will be repeated for all
of the above objects.

The inquiry sheet:

The students will be given an inquiry sheet to fill out while they are doing the
experiment.
Next the students will be asked to take out their inquiry sheet. The teacher will go over
the worksheet and discuss what should be done.
The inquiry sheet has three parts.
o 1st part: What I Predict
The teacher will tell the students to either write or draw what they
predict will happen in the experiment.
o 2nd part: What Happened
The teacher will tell the students to either write or draw what happened
during this experiment.
rd
o 3 part: What I Learned
The teacher will tell the students to either write or draw what they
learned from the experiment.
After the teacher explains the inquiry sheet, she/ he will introduce the experiment.
The Experiment:
The teacher will start off by explaining the experiment.
The students will be given a container, flour, a cup of cocoa powder, and multiple
rocks that are various sizes.
Next, the teacher will explain that the students will put a generous amount of flour at
bottom of their container.
The teacher will then go around to check to see if they have enough flour in each
container.
After that, the teacher will instruct the students to sprinkle their cup of cocoa powder
on top of the flour.
The teacher will then inform the students that they will be dropping the rocks into the
flour, which represents the moons surface.
Next, the teacher will explain that in the prediction area of the inquiry sheet the
students should either write or draw pictures of what they think is going to happen
when they drop the rocks into the moons surface. They will also note what rocks they
think will make bigger indents.
The teacher will go around making sure that the students are doing what was asking
and will be checking to see if they need any help.
After the students are done with the experiment, they will be given time to fill out the
rest of their inquiry sheet.
When they finish filling out their inquiry sheet, the teacher will go around and collect
them, they will be handed back tomorrow after the teacher reviews them.
The surface worksheet:
The students will be given a worksheet that has the photos on it. It will also have the
name of the object. The students will match the picture and name of the object to the
correct definition. Once they finish the worksheet they will hand it in.
Closure:
Two truths, one lie questions:
1st round:
o Meteoroids create craters on the moons surface. (True)
o Maria on the moons surface was cause from lava. (True)
o The only object that can create craters are meteoroids. (False)
2 round:
nd

o The sun is extremely hot. (True)

o We can visit the sun. (False)
o The sun is what heats up our planet. (True)

Closure/Summarizing Strategies:
To close, we will play the game two truths one lie. The teacher will tell the students 3
statements. Two of the statements will be true, and one of them will be a lie. Two
rounds of the game will be played. One round will be about the sun, which is what will
be taught tomorrow.

Accommodations/Differentiation:
Instead of writing the definitions the students are given typed definitions that they will
be gluing next to the pictures.

Materials/Resources:
The inquiry sheets
Surface worksheet
Picture definition packet
4 rocks in various sizes
Flour
A cup of cocoa powder
Container
Doc Cam
