THE INFLUENCE OF USING AUDIO VISUAL TO THE

STUDENTS MOTIVATION ON LEARNING ENGLISH


(AT SDN PULOGEBANG 04 PAGI GRADE FIVE)

CHAPTER I
INTODUCTION

1.1 Background of Study

At the present, English is an international language that learned in indonesia

from kindergardens until universities, course intitutions, even in the companies.

But, when the students learn english in the school espesially elementary students ,

the students are usually still difficult to learn English well if it is not suitable with

their willings. They think that English is difficult for them. Perhaps the methods

that used by the teachers are not interesting for them.

A creative teacher will find a way to create a positive learning atmosphere in

order that the students are not bored to listen to the teacher explanation. It is clear

that one of the problems faced by the teachers in teaching is how to motivate the

students through an efective way. One of the way to motivate the students in

learning is teaching through audiovisual. Audiovisual will make th`em motivated

in learning.

The main determinants of english language learning is only when students

have motivation. According to H. Douglas Brown(2000:33) says that One of the

more comflicated problems of second language learning and teaching has been

defining and applying the construct of motivation in the classroom. It means that

the biggest problem in learning teaching process espesially english is there is no

motivation to make the students feel interested in learning english.


Using audiovisual media in language classroom, the teacher becomes creative

in making the material for teaching english. According to The Turkish Online

Jurnal of Educational Technology by Dr Ismail Cakir says that audio-visual

materials are a great help in stimulating and facilitating the learning of a foreign

language. It means that teaching through audio visual can make the teacher has

way to make the student feel their interest quickly when language is experienced

in a lively way. The combination of moving pictures and sound can present

language more comprehensively and realistically than any other teaching medium.

In Teaching learning process, especially for the students , there are two important

things to motivate the students in learning english. for example methods and

medias that is used in learning English and the purpose is to make learning

English easier and interesting for the students and to atract the students in learning

English especially by using Audio Visual Media. Because if teacher does not use

a good material like audiovisual media, it will make the students not focus on

their lesson. They just talk with their friends, look around, and play something.

In this writing, the writer wants to reserch wheather Audio Media Visual can

be influence to the students motivation on learning English at fifth grade of the

elementary school

So that is way, the writer interests to reserch about the influence of using

audio visual to the students motivation on learning english at SDN Pulogebang

04 Pagi grade five.


1.2 Identification of the Problem

According to the background of the influence of Audio Visual Media, the

writer identifies the problems, there are :

1. Are there any influences on learning english using audio visua?

2. What are the influences of audio visual media to the result of learning

English?

3. How much the persentage of the students who can be motivated to learn

English by using audio visual medias?

4. How much persentage of students who get scores more than eighty after

learning it by using audio visual media?

5. How to teach english using audio visual?

1.3 Limitation and the Formulation of the Problem

The writer limited the reserch on the influence of using audio visual media to

the students motivation on learning english for elementary school grade five, and

the the formulation of problem are :

1. Are there any influences on learning english using audio visual ?

2. how much is the students persentage who can be motivated after learning

English by using audio visual medias?


1.4 Objectives

The purpose of this reserch are :

1. to know wheather audio media visual can be influence to the students

motivation on learning English at fifth grade of elementary school

2. How much is the students percentage who can be motivated after learning

English by using audio visual medias?

1.5 Significance of study

Theoritical significance

The theoritical significance of the study is to improve the the students

knowledge about english

Practical significance

1. For students :

The students who susually get bored and do not have any motivation in

learning english, the writer hopes that reserch will broaden their sight that

learning english is an enjoyable learning activity.

2. For resercher :

a. To know the benefit of audio visual media on learning English

process.

b. To know how big is the influence of audio visual media on learning

English process.
c. To know the percentage of the students who motivated after learning

English by using audio visual media.

d. To know the persentage of the students who have result more than

eighty after learning by using audio visual media.

3. For School

Teaching english by using Audiovisual Media could motivate the

students.

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

3.1 Description of Theories


A. The Definition of Media
Association of education and communication technology (AECT)
Media is a channel that is used by many people to deliver masseges
and informations
National Education Association (NEA)
Media is the types of communication as a text or audio visual and
the equipment. Media must be able to be manipulated, heard, seen,
and read (Sadiman. Education, understanding, improvement, and
utilization media. Jakarta : CV Rajawali. 1984 : Hal. 6
Hamalik (1994)
Education media is an equipment, method, and technique that is
used to make the communication more efective and make
communication between teacher and students in learning process in
school.
B. The definition of learning
According to Darsono (2002: 24 25) generally he explains that the
definition of learning is an activity that uses by the teacher to make the
students behavior change to be better.

B.1 learning Theories

Especially, learning can be deciphrable are :

Behaviorism theory
Learning as a teachers effort to form the behavior by giving
stimulus
Kognitif Theory
Learning as the teachers way to give opportunity to the students to
think in order to be able to know and understand what is learning.
Gestalt Theory
Learning as a teacher effort to give learning materials to make the
students easier to organize to be a gestalt ( the meanings matter)
Humanism Theory
Laerning give fredom to the students to choose the lesson and the
way to learn based on their proctivities and abilities.
B.2 The characteristics of learning
Darsono (2002: 65) mention that the characteristics of learning are :
Doing consciosly and planned systematicly
Can sprout the attention up and students motivation in learning
Can prepare the laerning materials that is intersting and
challenging for the students
Can use hand out for learning proverly and fun for the students
B.3 The Goal of learning
Goal is a comperhansion things about the result of education that is
wanted.
The goal of learning is to make students to get many experiences and with
those experiences, the behavior from the students can be better as a quality
or quantity. The behaviors involve knoledge, skills, score or norm that the
function is for holding the students behaviors (Darsono ,2002 : 26)

RESERCH METHODOLOGY

3.1 Place and Time Schedule

In this reserch, the writer will do the observation in the field by giving
Quesioner study after watching an english movie to the students that will
be reserched about 10(ten) questions to the 30 % samples to the students
in Pulogebang 04 Elementary School.

All of the reserch activities will be arranged on the bable below

3.2 This reserch is descriptif reserch.

Descriptif reserch is a reserch methodology that is done and the


main purpose is to make an image in a condition objectively.
(Notoatmodjo,2005 : 138 )

3.3 Population and Sample


3.3.1 Population

Population is all of the reserch object taht will be reserched


(Notoadmodjo, 2005 : 79)

The population that will be used in this reserch is 30 % from the


students in Pologebang 04 morning Elementary School is 40
students.

3.3.2 Sample

Sample is partly from the objects that reserched and they are
representatives from all of the populations (Notoadmodjo, 2005 :
79)

In this reserch the population that will be reserched is 40 students.


So to detemine the pattern of the sample is

3.4 Techniques of Collecting Data
3.4.1 Techniques
In this reserch, the techniques of collecting data that is used are:
Observation
Observation is the technique which is the resercher notes
the informations like their watch during observing. (Golo,
2005 : 116)
Quastion lists (Quesioner)
The questions that arranged in introgative form. (Golo,
2005 :116)
3.4.2 Data Source
The collecting data that in needed in this reserching is primer data
and secunder data.
Primer Data
Primer data is all of the datas or informations that taken
direct from the source by resercher.
Secunder Data
Secunder data is supporting data that taken from the files
that have collected and arranged by the other resercher.
(Marzuki, 2005 : 28)
3.5 Techniques of Analyzing Data
According to Setiadi (2007 : 188) analyzing data basely is a process to
get data or the summery of the data based on the goup of uncomplete
data by using a pattern so that produce information needed. In the
process of analyzing there are some ways to take are :
3.5.1. Editing
Editing is checking the answer lists that have given by the
resercher.
3.5.2. Coding
Coding is clasifying the answers from the respondents into
categories.
3.5.3. Sorting
Sorting is choosing or gruoping datas based on the genre that the
resercher wants.
3.5.4. Entry Data
Entry data is the answers taht have given category code and then
entered into the table by calculating data frekuency.
3.5.5. Cleaning
Cleaning is cleaning the data, seeing the variables wheather the
data has been right or wrong.
3.5.6. Release the Information
Appropriating with the goal of the reserch that done.
3.6. Statistical Hypothesis
After processing the data, then taken the analyze so that the data can be
used. There are several ways to analyze, such as : kuantitatif, descriptif
kuantitatif, and analysing frame.
1. Kuantitatif (stastical method)
To know the influence of media audio visual to the students
interests on learning english in the class. It is used regresy linier with
kuadrat and corelasi analysis

According to Dajan (1972: 367) said that regresy analysis is a
method that used possibility the form from connection among
variables are :

2. Descriptif Kualitatif
Analysing by collecting the problems and paraphresing date until
can get a condition meticulously. Basicly using this analysis to get
image a condition on learning process in the fifth grade , by using
audio visual media in a condition by prepering dates that have
alreasy reserched.

CHAPTER IV

FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

2.1 The Result of Study


As it has been mentioned in the limitation of the problem in previous
chapter , this reserch focused on using audio visual media to attract
students interests on learning English. In this chapter, the resercher will
report the findings of the reserch, which took place in the fifth grade at
Pulogebang 04 morning Elementary School of Jakarta. This reserch used
movie to atract the students interests on learning english. The activities
including discussion about the movie, find certain informations from
movie they watched. The finding also show the result of classroom
observation and the quesionare given to the students of the class to be
observed

CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTION

5.1 CONCLUSIONS
From the data that the writer obtained and analyzed showed that the use of
audio visual media on learning process is effective. It can be seen from
quesionare that most of the learners are interested to use audio visual as a
media of learning process. In the field reserch also found that the learners are
motivated to study english. The students were enthusiastic to pay attention. It
means that audio visual encorage them to study.
5.2 SUGGESTIONS
The use of audio visual media to attract the students interests will be effective
for learning process if the teacher could engaged the student to the conducive
teaching atmosphere. Audio visual media can be used not only for attract the
students interests on learning process, but also for grammar, vocabulary,
writing, and listening. The teacher must be carefully to choose movie because
the words and the sentences arrangements of the movies sometimes different
from what they have studied in the previous lesson. Cartoon movies are good
for them because it is suitable with their ages.
