LONG FUNCTIONAL TEXT

 1. Narrative text
Narrative text is a kind of story of event narrated or retold in spoken or written of which
social function is to entertain its readers.

Example of narrative text :

In the first paragraph, it introduce the Characters ( a red hen, the goose and the duck ) and
settings of the story ( in farm ).

In paragraph 2,3,4, 5 show the crisis in the story ( a red hen found a grain of wheat and asks
the goose and the duck who will plant this wheat? ; who will take this wheat to the mil?l
; who will make some bread with the flour? ; who will eat this )

In last paragraph, it shows the situation which problem have been resolved ( a red hen eat the
bread with her chickens together ).

The use of past tense.

Time connectives and conjuction: once upon time, one day

Action verbs in past tense: found, planted etc.

 2.RECOUNT TEXT
A recount tells past events which accurred in sequence. Narrative and recount text are
similar that is both tell the past events.

Example of recount text :

In first paragraph, it shows information about an event ( I joined Traditional Competition

Dance in Jakarta Last year ).

In paragraph 2,3,4 show a sequence of events in a choronological order ( I went to Jakarta by

plane; I went dressroom; I perfomed on the stage ).

In last paragraph, it shows the conclusion of events ( I get first place ).

The use of past tense.

Conjunctions and time connectives : Then, however, after that.

 3. Descriptive Text
A descriptive text is a text which portrays the image of certain thing which a writer wants
to transfer it to readers.

Example of descriptive text :

In first paragraph, it introduce to the object that described ( my school ).

In paragraph 2, 3 show the description about the object ( my schools size; how it looks; ....).

The use of simple present tense.

Thinking verbs : there is a beautiful mosque.

 4. Report Text
The social function of a report text is to draw a general inference or to report.

Example of report text :

In first paragraph, it shows a brief description about Venice.

In paragraph 2,3,4 tell about important facts about Venice ( Venice is world-famous for its canal; you
can ride gondola there; you can see the amusing citys landmark such as Piazza San Marco; The city
is also well known for its beautiful and romantic view.

Relating verbs to explain features: Gondola is the classical Venetian boat.

Paragraph with a topic sentence to organize information.

 5. Anecdote Text

Advantages are have generic structure abstract, orientation, crisis, reaction and has
language features action verb, imperative, simple past tense, conjunction of time.

Disadvantages are dont have coda,exclamation words, rhetoric question.

 6. Hortatory Text
Hortatory is type of text containing an argumentation which may lead readers to do
something.

Example of hortatory text :

Advantages this text are have generic structure thesis, argumentative, recomendation
and language features action verb, simple present tense, thinking verbs, abstract noun,
temporal connectives.

Disadvantages are dont have passive voice, modal adverbs, evaluative words.

 7. Spoof Text
Spoof text tells a factual story which occurs in the past and ends in tragic, ironic,
humorous/funny ending, or in an unpredictable twist.

Example of spoof text :

Advantages this text are have generic structure orientation, events, twist and have
language features focusing on people, using action verb.

Disadvantages is dont have adverb of time and place.

 8. Explanation Text
Explanation is a type of text which clarifies a process relating to natural phenomena,
social science, and culture.

Example of explanation text :

Advantages this text are have generic structure general statement, sequenced
explanation and language features simple present tense.

Disadvantages are dont have passive voice pattern and chronological connection.

 9. Discussion Text
A discussion text funtion to provide information about controversial issues and
present arguments from two sides: the pros and cons.

Example of discussion text :

In the first paragraph, it is Issue.

In paragraph 2 and 3, it is Argument For or Against.

In paragraph 4, it is Elaboration.

In the last paragraph, it a Conclusion.

 10. News Item Text
News item text is a written public information of which the purpose is to inform
readers about events of the day which are considered newsworthy or important.

Example of news item text :

In the first pargraph, it is Main Event/ Newsworthly Event.

In pargraph 2 and 3, it is Background Event/ Elaboration.

In the last paragraph, it is Source.

 11. Review Text
Review text is to make a critique or evaluate an art work oe event for a public
audience, such book, cosmetics product, car, call phone, notebook,etc.

Example of review text :

In the first paragraph, it is Introduction.

In second paragraph, it is Evaluation.

In third paragraph, it is Interpretation.

In the last paragraph, it is Summary.

 12. Procedure Text
The social function of procedure text is to inform ways or intruction for making or
doing something completely.

Example of procedure text :

The Goal of Activity (Fried Egg).

Any Material Needed for Procedure (Ingredients and Equipment).

Steps to Achieve the goal (Method from step 1 to step 4).

Conclusion (serving the fried egg).

In the first paragraph, it is Thesis.

In second paragraph, it is Argument.
