Books aim to broaden cultural discourse

T
his fall and into the next, schol-
arly books in religious studies
defy easy labels and reflect the
eagerness of publishers to widen
academic discourse and upset
conventional wisdom in the
name of new knowledgein science,
across genders, between faiths, and
around the world.
At Baylor University Press, for
example, director Carey Newman says
he aims to publish books that transcend
traditional divisions in Christianity:
For the longest time, categories like
conservative, evangelical, progressive,
or liberal had texture and rootagebut
no more. He points to Shelley Rambos
Resurrecting Wounds: Living in the Afterlife
of Trauma (out now), which centers on
the spiritual impact and negotiation of
trauma and does not fit neatly under the
usual labels.
RELIGION AND
SCIENCE
The intersection of faith with
science has fascinated
scholars, particularly on the
subjects of ecology and the
environment. In Climate
Church, Climate World: How
People of Faith Must Work for
Change (Rowman &
Littlefield, Mar. 2018), minister Jim Antal
frames climate change as a moral crisis
one the Christian church must confront.
Antal comes from the mainline
Protestant United Church of Christ
denomination, but this message of envi-
ronmentalism and its religious impetus is
shared by the pope, as demonstrated in
Mercy in Motion: The Social Teachings of Pope
Francis (Rowman & Littlefield, Mar.
2018). Written by Thomas Massaro, dean
and professor of moral theology at the
Religion & Spirituality Update
Jesuit School of Theology at Santa Clara
University, Mercy expands that moral
imperative to both stewardship of the
planet and safekeeping of one another.
Rafael Luciani offers a similar estimation
in Pope Francis and the Theology of the People
(Orbis, out now), which illuminates the
gaps between rich and poor, protected and
endangered, empowered and destitute,
and shows how the pope wants to see
those inequities addressed.
Authors also look beyond climate
change to include other topics in science
and other fields. Editors including theo-
logian J. P. Moreland, intelligent design
theorist Stephen C. Meyer, scientist

researcher Ann K. Gauger, and seminary

England, Denis Alexander tackles the
topic of evolution versus faith in Does
Biology Have a Purpose? An Exegetical
Handbook (Kregel Academic, Jan. 2018).
J. Scott Turner, professor of biology at the
State University of New York College of
Environmental Science and Forestry,
takes direct aim at Charles Darwins defi-
nition of life in Purpose and Desire: What

The Dictionary of Christianity and Science:
The Definitive Reference for the Intersection of

and cultural borders to show the influ-
ence of Asian women in Leading Wisdom:

Along with mining the ancient and
recent past for womens influence,
Rebecca Todd Peters, professor of reli-
gious studies at Elon University, grapples
with the ethical issues they face today. In

abortion that is based on respecting

Transcending any one era is Mother of
God: The Jewish Roots of the Virgin Mary
(Image, Oct. 2018) by Brant James
Pitre, professor of sacred scripture at
Notre Dame Seminary, who describes
the Virgin Mary as an exemplar not only
for women, but also for men of faith.
THINKING ABOUT
JUDAISM
Judaism, in both its ancient and current
iterations, continues to be reinvestigated
and reinterpreted. Kenneth R. Snow,
professor emeritus of Jewish history at
the University of Haifa in Israel, reaches
back to the Middle Ages to detail the
complexity of papal attitudes to the
Jews. Levis Vindication: The 1007
Anonymous as It Really Is (Univ. of
Pittsburgh, Nov.) revisits and connects
to his own The 1007 Anonymous and
Papal Sovereignty: Jewish Perceptions of the
Papacy and Papal Policy in the High Middle
Ages, originally published in 1984 and
reissued in 2015. The 1007
Anonymous text was composed in the
13th century by an unnamed author and
suggests the proper relations between
Jews, their lay rulers, and the pope.
Other books also offer historical
reconsiderations: Baptists, Jews, and the
Holocaust: The Hand of Sincere Friendship
(Judson, out now) by Lee B. Spitzer, gen-
eral secretary of American Baptist
churches, looks at how Baptists in the
U.S. responded to reports of anti-Semi-
tism, persecution, and possible genocide
during World War II by sending aid and
offering assistance to Jews in Europe.
Ambivalent Embrace (Univ. North
Carolina, Nov.) by University of
Pittsburgh assistant professor of reli-
gious studies Rachel Kranson looks at
the postwar shift in economic fortunes
for Jewish communities, showing that
some Jewish religious, artistic, and
intellectual leaders were concerned that
the ascent of large numbers of Jews into
the American middle class would nega-
tively affect their faith.
Sacred Dissonance: The Blessing of
Difference in Jewish-Christian Dialogue by
Anthony Le Donne (Hendrickson, Nov.),
associate professor of New Testament at
United Theological Seminary in Dayton,
Ohio, and Larry Behrendt, a specialist in
interreligious dialogue based in
Hollywood, Calif., explores
the cultural and religious
identities of Jews and
Christians and offers new
ways for them to interact.

multivalent meanings of

IDENTITY CRISIS
As the country turns away from tradi-
tional faiths, evangelical churches
which seemed to be immune to the losses
in membership experienced by the main-
line Protestants and Catholicsalso have
declined: Pew Religion Research Institute
data show the portion of Americans who
call themselves evangelicals has dropped
from 25% to 17% since 2006, and today
many more Americans are calling them-
selves spiritual but not religious. A

wrestle with the challenges of modernity
and decry the entanglement of evangelical
Christianity with conservative politics.
Scandals might also have contributed
to disillusionment, such as the one that
toppled TV evangelists Jim and Tammy
Faye Bakker, among the most public faces
of evangelical Christianity in the U.S. in
the 1980s. John Wiggers PTL: The Rise
and Fall of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakkers
Evangelical Empire (Oxford Univ., out
now) describes their descent, along with
other scandals at that time that caused
some to question the health of evangelical
Christianity in America, even as evan-
gelical mega-churches thrived.
Fast-forward to today. In the autobio-
graphical Still Christian: Following Jesus Out
of American Evangelicalism (Westminster
John Knox, out now), David P. Gushee,
distinguished professor of Christian
ethics at Mercer University, recounts
becoming a born-again Southern
Baptist in 1978, only to later run into
problems with evangelical stances on
politics and on social issues, such as
LGBTQ inclusion in the church.
Gushee asks the question he has wres-
tled withwhen a Christian man
becomes disillusioned with American
Christianity, where can he turn?
and comes to a more complex and
nuanced faith.
InterVarsity Press has a book that also
reflects the current tensions. In Search of
Ancient Roots: The Christian Past and the
Evangelical Identity Crisis by Kenneth
Stewart (out now), professor of theolog-
ical studies at Covenant College in
Lookout Mountain, Ga., points to the
disconnect between todays evangelicals
and the Protestant traditions that grew
out of the Reformation.
Many Christian churchesand espe-
cially Christian publishersbelieve young
people will be their salvation, resuscitating
the faith and rescuing it from diminishing
numbers and fading cultural influence. In
Faith Formation in a Secular Age (Baker,
Oct.), Andrew Root, Carrie Olson Baalson
Chair of Youth and Family Ministry at
Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minn., con-
siders it vital for the Christian church to

appeal to youth, but the error in that
approach, he writes, is that it can reflect a
larger cultural obsession with youth, and
when we link faith to the authenticity of
youthfulness, we make youthfulness itself
faiths measure.
The theme of review and reassessment
suffuses the latest religious-studies lists,
reopening time-honored subjects and
relinking the past to the present. John
Dominic Crossan, professor emeritus at
DePaul University, continues this shift
toward the idea of a renewed Christianity,
one that operates fully in the present
while adhering most closely to the purity
of its past. In Resurrecting Easter: How the
West Lost and the East Kept the Original
Easter Vision (HarperOne, Feb. 2018),
Crossan argues that the Eastern Orthodox
church preserved more fully the biblical
version of the resurrection and its
meaning for Christians than Roman
Catholicism did.
This theme can also be detected in the
work of Bart Ehrman, professor of reli-
gious studies at the University of North
CarolinaChapel Hill, as he leaves
longtime publisher HarperOne for his
first book with Simon and Schuster. The
Triumph of Christianity (Feb. 2018).
Ehrman details the growth of
Christianity as a faith not destined to
take root in Western culture, yet one
that came to pervade it.
A shift away from personal piety
toward greater social consciousness and
activism is the way some Christians are
redefining their faith. With both
Rachael Keefes The Life-Saving Church:
Reclaiming the Gospel for Suicide Prevention
(Apr. 2018) and Jeff Hoods The Execution
of God: Encountering the Death Penalty (out
now), Chalice Press channels the concern
for saving souls into the hopeful mission
of preventing deaths. Chalice president
and publisher Brad Lyons says, When
we brought these books under contract,
we werent linking the two as anti-death
books. But, he adds, in the bigger pic-
ture, Chalice Press encourages churches
and Christians to think differently about
the stigmatized, taboo issues in our
society, like the death penalty, suicide,
racism, classism, sexuality, and other
issues.
FACING EAST
There also are new books on Buddhism in
religious studies, including several
coming from Wisdom Publications,
among them Sexuality in Classical
South Asian Buddhism by Jose
Cabezon (out now), the Dalai Lama
Professor of Tibetan Buddhist studies
at the University of CaliforniaSanta
Barbara. Cabezon examines sexual
mores of the present in the context of
Buddhist traditions.
Sexuality, cosmology, and even fetal
development are key concerns for the
Dalai Lama himself, and his thinking
on those issues is expressed in The
Physical World (Wisdom, Nov.), trans-
lated by Thupten Jinpa. Also coming from
Wisdom is the second volume of the trans-
lation of Divine Stories: Divyavadana, Part
2 (Dec.), translated by Andy Rotman, pro-
fessor in the religious and Buddhist studies
program at Smith College. Publishing the
translation aligns with the commitment to
authenticity and accessibility articulated
by Wisdom publisher Daniel Aitken, who
says, As cultural and linguistic norms
change, updated translations that reflect
these developments will be desirable.
Making these contemporary explanations
of the Buddhas words available to an
English-reading audience is part of
Wisdoms mission.

Fresh Looks at the Bible
Bringing Scripture into the 21st century

iblical studies is both a flour-
ishing academic field and the core
of the religion publishing busi-
ness, not least because the Bible
remains opaque to many readers.
The complexity of the Bibles
source material and its enduring relevance
through the centuries make it fertile
ground for scholars and teachers, and new
and forthcoming titles aim to create a
clearer picture of this book, which remains
central in Western culture.
But as increasing numbers of Americans
turn away from the traditional faiths, has
the Bible lost its place at the top of the
Western canon? Suzanne
Scholzs The Bible as Political
Artifact (Fortress, out now)
examines the Scriptures
through a feminist lens and
also weighs the impact of our
multicultural society on bib-
lical exegesis. Scholz writes,
In a time in which the Bible
plays a central role only to fun-
damentalist Christians and to
Jews and Christians com-
mitted to their respective religious insti-
tutions, scholars cannot simply assume the
importance of the Bible anymore. Rather,
the field has to articulate in its work that
the study of this sacred text matters even
today. Scholz is a professor of Old
Testament at Perkins School of Theology
in Dallas, Tex.
R.W.L. Moberlys The Bible in a
Disenchanted Age (Baker Academic, Jan.
2018) promises to answer the question,
Why should we still believe what the
Bible has to say? Moberly, a professor of
theology and biblical interpretation at
Durham University in Durham,
England, says the main focus of his work
is the responsible understanding and
use of the Bible in the life, thought, and
spirituality of Christian faith today.

University Press, likens the challenge of
biblical scholarship to solving a 5,000-
piece puzzle during a weeks vacation at
the beach. One of Baylors contributions
to that project is an October release that
intersects with current issues related to
disabilities: The Bible and Disability
edited by Sarah J. Melcher, professor
emeritus of Hebrew Scriptures at Xavier
University; Mikeal C. Parsons, professor
and Macon Chair of Religion at Baylor;
and Amos Yong, professor of theology
and mission at Fuller Theological
Seminaryis an anthology of the work
of 14 scholars who examine what the
Bible says about the human body, in both
ability and disability.
Distaste for the vengeful god of the
Old Testament has been a barrier to
reading the Bible for some. In the two-
volume The Crucifixion of the Warrior God
(Fortress, Apr. 2018), author and pastor
Gregory Boyd (The Myth of a Christian
Nation) addresses the apparent dichotomy
within the Bible between this violent
god and the loving, sacrificial god
revealed in the crucifixion.
BOOK BY BOOK
Other new titles zero in on individual
books of the Bible. In September,
HarperOne published The Exodus by
renowned biblical scholar Richard
Friedman (Who Wrote the Bible?). Michael
Maudlin, executive editor, calls Friedman
a master detective who demonstrates that
genuine scholarship transcends merely
choosing between faith and skepticism.
Maudlin says Friedman responds to claims
that the stories of Moses and the Exodus
are myths with no historical foundation
by revealing the facts underpinning these
most familiar and foundational Old
Testament stories. Friedman is currently
a professor of Hebrew and comparative
literature at the University of Georgia.
Another look at the book of Exodus is
The Lost World of the Flood (InterVarsity,
Apr. 2018); authors Tremper Longman
III, distinguished scholar of biblical
studies at Westmont College, and John
Walton, professor of Old Testament at
Wheaton College and Graduate School,
explore what the story of the Exodus
flood might have meant to those who
first heard or read the
story. In April 2018,
Regnery will publish
the first volume of The
Rational Bible by radio
host, television com-
mentator, and syndi-
cated columnist Dennis
Prager. The verse-by-
verse guide through
Exodus is meant to
appeal to readers of all
faiths (or no faith) and to make the
Exodus story relevant in todays world.
The Pentateuch by Marvin A. Sweeney
(Abingdon, Nov.), professor of Hebrew
Bible at Claremont School of Theology
and professor of Tanakh at the Academy
for Jewish Religion (California) in Los
Angeles, combines a literary approach
with a historical reading of the text, to
situate the Pentateuch in its cultural and
historical context.

Baloghs Social and Historical Approaches
to the Bible (Lexham, Nov.) aims to guide
readers to an understanding that the
Bible was written in a particular histor-
ical moment, in a specific society, and not
created in a political or cultural vacuum.

Freedom of religion, enshrined in the
Constitution, is a national ideal. Yet
from colonial times to President Donald

according to Tisa Wenger, associate pro-
fessor of American studies at Yale and of
American religious history in the
Divinity School.
Wengers focus on the history and
power of religious freedom grew from
her early study of Native Americans of
the Southwest. She says of her first
book, We Have a Religion: The 1920s
Pueblo Indian Dance Controversy and
American Religious Freedom, I took an
unconventional pathway, looking at
what counts as religion. Her finding: confront U.S. imperialismwhether

On an impromptu visit to a London cem-
etery in 2005, Curtis W. Freeman was
drawn to the headstones of three men
amid the graves of 123,000 dissenters
all Christians who had been deemed unfit
for a burial within walls sanctified by the
Church of England. The three men were
John Bunyan, whose Pilgrims Progress
vivified evangelical and spiritual dissent;
Daniel Defoe, whose castaway Robinson
Crusoe built a life by rescuing wreckage
from his ship, showing a man retrieving
the faith from his church and adapting it
to survive on the desert island of moder-
nity, Freeman tells PW; and William
Blake, whose apocalyptic visions in
Jerusalem narrate a cosmic struggle
between good and evil, Freeman says.
The work of these three men provides
the framework for Undomesticated Dissent:
Democracy and the Public Virtue of Religious
Nonconformity (Baylor Univ., out now)
because, Freeman writes, they shattered
the boundaries that limit religious expe-
rience. And because their works would
be read worldwide, they also dissemi-
nated the message of dissenting
tradition.

delineated church, he writes. Freeman
shows how this undomesticated dissent
led to the First Amendment and enshrined
the value that everyone was entitled to
an opinion about religion and to follow
the dictates of conscience. This religious
liberty, which was a subversive social
vision, is a vital practice for the good of
Christianity today and, indeed, for the
flourishing of free societies, Freeman
writes. Dissent is more than just
whining. It is a profound Yes to Jesus
Christ as Lord, to God alone as sovereign
over conscience... and to the community
where Christ reigns and is discerned
together. Asked about current note-
worthy dissenters, Freeman gives a few
examples: Pope Franciss call for a church
that it is about mercy as Jesus is about
mercy; the martyred Martin Luther
King Jr., who,just as Blake envisioned
Beulah land, dreamed of an America that
could become such a beloved commu-

pastor working to revitalize the black
community as an act of faith, an echo of
