The University of Madras has entered its 158 years since
it was established on 5th September 1857 by an Act of
Legislative Council of India, on the model of London
University. It is a mother University of many Universities
of Southern India. The University is functioning in four
campuses in the heart of Chennai city, Tamil Nadu. The
University has as its motto Doctrina Vim Promovet
Insitam meaning Learning promotes (ones) natural
(innate) talent. In the year 2000, the University of Madras
was accredited for the first time by NAAC with
FIVE Star Status and later reaccredited A grade in
2007. Besides, the University enjoys the special status of
University with Potential for Excellence - UGC.
Department of Computer Science, Institute of
Distance Education (IDE)
The University of Madras established an Institute of
Distance Education (IDE) in the year 1981, to enhance
the learners to achieve their educational, career and
personal goals. IDE has completed more than 34 years of
service in the field of distance education. At present it
offers 27 UG, 29 PG, 8 certificate and 6 industry integrated
courses. IDE is also offering MSc (IT), BBA courses
through Virtual University and PAN AFRICAN for
South African countries. Department of Computer
Science being part of the IDE, offers B.C.A, B.Com(C.A),
M.C.A, M.Sc.(IT), PGDCS and CCA programme. The
