FRESH WATER GENERATOR

Its auxiliary machinery designed to produce fresh water on board the

ship from the evaporation and condensation of seawater. This water is used
for: Cooling System, Boiler feed Human Consumption and other purposes

This machine is important on board a ship since it is necessary to achieve

the autonomy of the ship.

To understand the fresh water generator easier, we must to know that on

board the ship, there are two elements that are available in quantity on the
ship, and that are used by this machine to produce fresh water, water from
the sea and heat from engines, generators and boilers.

Now thanks to these elements it is possible to realize two of the main

principles of this machine

Evaporation: known as the change from liquid to gaseous state

Condensation: it is the change of gaseous state to liquid

Now we have other principle that is vacuum pressure

In general the fresh water generator takes advantage of the heat from water
that comes from the jacket of the main engine. the water comes to a
temperature of between 70 to 80 Celsius, but there is a problem, the water
evaporates at 100 Celsius, therefore the geneator creates a vacuum
pressure and minimize the water evaporation temperature

Then this is in general the operation of the fresh water generator, creates an
internal vacuum pressure, to then evaporate the water separating the salt
and the impurities, to finally condense the water

Tube type / plate type: they are similar processes, but the only difference is
that tube type uses tube and the other plates. but the plate type is more
efficient because it has more heat transfer surface

We can see here, the water from the motor jacket enters through the tubes to
the evaporator where the seawater is, evaporates the water and goes up to
the condenser where the sea water is cold in tubes
Heat exchanger plates of conductive material, pressed together, separated
by gaskets. And here the condensation happens.

Similar structure of the condenser and here evaporation occurs.

Demister: filters used to separate suspended impurities

Front Cover: is the front cover helps create the vacuum pressure

Fresh water pump: it is used to supply the generated fresh water from the
fresh water generator to water tanks.
Ejector pump: it supplies cooling water to condenser

Air brine educator: it is used to remove the accumulated brine from the
generator and to create the necessary vacuum

securty valve: used to release pressures

Pressure indicator: indicates the internal pressure

thermometer: indicates the temperature

Salinometer: indicates in ppm the amount of salt in the water
