Ancon TeploTie
Used In British
Passivhaus
Ancon TeploTie, the low thermal conductivity wall tie
manufactured from basalt fibres, has been used in the first
certified Passivhaus to be built using traditional masonry
cavity walls.

Passivhaus is a globally recognised Standard for the

construction of low energy buildings which provide excellent
levels of comfort in both winter and summer. The first
Passivhaus was built in Germany in 1991, however not until
2010 in Denby Dale in West Yorkshire has this Standard been
adapted to British building methods.

Achieving the energy efficiency levels of Passivhaus relies

on the construction of a well-insulated airtight building
envelope. Thermal bridges must be removed wherever
possible to limit heat loss. When building with cavity walls,
this makes Wall Tie selection particularly important.

Bill Butcher of Green Building Company said, “Our choice of

Wall Tie has been carefully modelled in Passivhaus Planning
Package (PHPP) - the design tool for architects designing to
the Passivhaus standard. The use of basalt wall ties gives a
nil reading for heat transference”.

TeploTie wall ties are exclusive to Ancon. They have a

thermal conductivity of just 0.7W/mK, making them the most
thermally efficient Wall Tie on the market. They are available
in various lengths to suit even the most super-insulated
cavities, essentially future-proofing masonry construction
with which all clients, contractors and designers are familiar.

The masonry walls on this Passivhaus development comprise

an inner leaf of dense concrete block, a 300mm cavity filled
with fibreglass insulation batts and a natural stone external
leaf.

Bill Butcher said of the achievement, “The Denby Dale

Passivhaus proves that it is possible to build an ultra low
energy house using standard British building materials and
techniques, at a low cost.”

The build cost of this 118sqm house was just £141,000. It

should require minimal heating with costs of around £75 per
year.

conductivity wall ties, visit www.ancon.co.uk/LowConductor

Combining the properties of both textile and resilient flooring
Flotex has always been in a league of its own but these latest
aesthetic enhancements make the innovative high performance
floor covering a practical and design minded choice for a wider
range of projects than ever before.
Flotex has been the focus of a design collaboration with Ettore
Sottsass which resulted in a series of refreshingly unique, stylish
and audacious design concepts. Building upon these impressive
credentials Forbo’s international design team has created new
sheet designs that include large pattern repeats and vivid colours
for maximum impact.

Over 58 new colourways and a new ‘Spin’ range with vivid colours
and lively circle design have been introduced to the Flotex HD
(high definition) collection, which features designs with superior
‘textured’ aesthetics and a three-dimensional appearance. Four
other stocked Flotex HD designs – Pulse, Cord, Vector and
Field - all form large endless pattern repeats with rich, vibrant
colours, making the range stylish and completely on trend for
contemporary commercial interiors. An additional eight designs
can be manufactured to order.

The Flotex Classic collection, characterised by more subtle colour

nuances and a practical, geometric look, has been enhanced with
40 additional colours and a new design range. Calgary is a soft
natural design offered in a wide colour choice, perfect for large
open spaces requiring a muted ambience.
“Flotex really has evolved,” says Julie Dempster, Marketing
Manager at Forbo Flooring Systems. “The vivid and vibrant design
capabilities of Flotex HD and our inspirational Sottsass designs
have changed the product offer beyond all recognition. Its
unrivalled performance proposition and enhanced design potential
means Flotex stands out in a class of its own – a completely
distinctive flooring solution.”

Thanks to its unique composition of millions of densely packed

electrostatically flocked nylon fibres firmly anchored into a vinyl
base layer, Flotex combines the hard wearing and washable
characteristics of a resilient floor with the warmth, comfort and
acoustic properties of carpet. The construction has earned Flotex
BAF certification because of the way allergens are trapped and
released safely through vacuuming to create a more comfortable
environment. In addition, the highly effective anti-microbial
treatment Sanitized® means Flotex offers constant protection
against bacteria including MSRA and E-coli. All Flotex floor
coverings have BRE global accreditation.

Forbo’s integrated approach to the development of its new sheet

collection means that Flotex can be coordinated with designs from
the manufacturers’ linoleum, vinyl, entrance flooring and carpet
tile collections, enabling the creation of truly integrated flooring
design concepts.

The entire Flotex collection can be viewed at Forbo’s London

NEW Stannah Midilift
XLplus Powers Health
And Wellbeing At High
Wycombe Surgery
Hot off the production line, in demand and straight into service, Stannah Lifts’ latest
addition to its range of vertical platform lifts, the Midilift XLplus, is helping to deliver
an all-time high in health and wellbeing at Carrington House Surgery in High Wycombe,
Buckinghamshire.

Located close to the town centre, this modern, purpose-built NHS medical practice has
provided an invaluable health service to the local community for over twelve years. But, in
response to Government directives requiring more services to be offered in the primary care
sector, the surgery is expanding. Once housing their administration offices, the first floor
is being converted into consulting rooms, thereby necessitating lift access for people with
restricted mobility, from pushchair-pushers to wheelchair-users.

Centrally located in the premises, the lift features

clear glass panels to three sides with two half-height
mirrors to the right-hand side wall, ranged either
side of the control panel. Enclosed in a glass shaft,
it offers scenic and convenient travel between the
spacious, ground-floor reception area and the first-
floor consulting rooms. Harmonising with the clean,
neutral décor, the lift offers an impressive, high-tech
facility wholly in keeping with its surroundings.

Since handover of the Midilift XLplus in April 2010,

Carrington House Surgery is poised to deliver care
at even healthier heights. By streamlining the
movement of all mobility compromised individuals
between the two floors, the lift also helps the
practice owners meet DDA requirements.

The new dynasty Midilift XLplus benefits everyone

involved. Supplied in a structure-supported enclosure
for swift, adaptable, cost-effective installation, it is the ideal solution for buildings where it
is not necessary, practical or possible to install a conventional passenger lift.

Lift users and budget-conscious, space-strapped owners appreciate the advanced range of
ergonomic features such as automatic push-button controls for ease of operation; a partially
enclosed car for an enhanced sense of safety; two car styles for a greater choice of finishes,
and a new traction drive system for a smooth, quiet ride with an increased travel to 12m for
loads up to 400kg.

Carrington House Surgery Practice Manager, Helen Morris-Khan, enthuses: “Stairs may be
great exercise but, for various reasons, not everyone – staff included – can always use them,
so the provision of the Midilift XLplus means we offer an even better health service and
working environment to everyone who sets foot inside the surgery. It is totally in keeping
with our contemporary, dedicated facility and it is hard to imagine the working day without
its assistance.”

Hambleside Danelaw Rooflights Specified For M&S’s Biggest Building
Hambleside Danelaw’s barrel vault rooflights have been installed
on Marks and Spencer’s largest ever building.

Commissioned as a ProLogis and CA Roofing Services project and

currently being fitted out, the retailer’s new distribution centre
in Bradford occupies 95,000m². The specification for the centre,
which is scheduled to open later this year, required 4,500m of
rooflights.

As with all of the Hambleside Danelaw’s award-winning rooflight

range, the rooflight assembly uses an insulating core to improve
thermal efficiency. The rooflights will also offer the M&S staff very
pleasant diffused natural lighting in which to work. Independent
research from De Montfort University has shown that this has a
positive impact on productivity as well as saving on energy costs.

Vince Cranmer, Hambleside’s divisional director for rooflights and

cladding, said: “Hambleside Danelaw is justifiably proud that
our rooflights are on the largest building in the M&S property
portfolio. Our award-winning range of GRP rooflights can offer U-
values as low as 0.8 W/m²K and they can be found on high-profile
buildings such as the British Museum, the futuristic McLaren F1
headquarters and Gorilla Kingdom at London Zoo. It’s no wonder
that they are being increasingly regarded as the environmental
rooflight of choice.”

This is not the first time that Hambleside Danelaw’s rooflights have
been chosen as part of a prestigious ProLogis development. In
2008 they were installed as part of the ProLogis Pineham let to
Sainsbury’s that won numerous national and international accolades
for leading the way in green building technology. The market
leading heat saving methods of construction, which included
large GRP insulated rooflights, were estimated to reduce energy
consumption by up to 40% compared to a standard warehouse.

Greenfields – A Bright Spot For Kingspan Solar
Eco-friendly home development Greenfields, in Hampshire,
has installed Kingspan Solar Marvel flat plate panels on
each of its 75 houses. The ‘in-roof’ solar thermal panels
service each property’s hot water requirements all-year-
round, ensuring carbon emissions and energy costs are kept
to a minimum.
The south-facing Greenfields homes were fitted with Marvel
flat plate solar panels, which are both cost-effective and
provide excellent levels of efficiency and performance. The ‘in-roof’ panels were mounted directly
onto the roof battens, which were then tiled up to the cassette, not only to provide a weather-tight
installation, but also to maintain the integrity of the roof itself.
The Marvel flat plate panels form part of a complete package from Kingspan Solar, including Range
Tribune HE Solar cylinders. Featuring a purpose-designed solar coil, which allows maximum heat transfer
of solar energy to the stored water, the unvented stainless steel cylinders complement the solar panels
perfectly. They also ensure the homes’ low literage baths fill fast, that the showers are powerful and
that there is minimal loss of performance when more than one tap is being used at the same time.

‘Best Domestic Heating Product’ of the year at the prestigious H&V

solar heating to be incorporated into a combi boiler system, offering
the dual advantage of solar power and hot water on demand. Before
IntaSol was introduced solar heating required a stored hot water
system, meaning a customer would have to scrap a perfectly good
combi boiler.
IntaEco’s commercial director Cynthia Fisher said: “When we introduced
IntaSol, we knew it had huge potential impact on the renewable

Care Home Receives Single Ply Protection With A Green Roof Finish
SpectraROOF Single Ply Engineering, a division of IKO PLC, has provided a waterproofing system on a newly built residential care home.
Riverview Care Home is a development in a prominent area of Witham, Essex. Main Contractor, SDC Builders in Bedford, requested a green roof
as the top finishing layer on the roofs pitched at 17.5 degrees, and wanted a waterproofing membrane system with a long life expectancy which
was not a PVC. Roofing Contractor, Cambridge Asphalte Group, recommended SpectraROOFs’ mechanically fixed Spectraplan SM120 dark grey, a
polyester reinforced TPE waterproofing system with a dark grey standing seam to complete the specification. The 2000m2 project completed also

Spectraplan TPE membranes are environmentally friendly using no plasticisers or halogens in their manufacture, releasing none either in the
case of fire and being fully recyclable at the end of their useful life. This is usually a very important specification issue when considering public
establishments. Production of SpectraROOF single ply membranes commenced at the company’s Clay Cross site in September 2009, making

Zinc For Listed Building

Penthouses
The surge in popularity of zinc roofing and cladding systems owes much to
the design scope that the metal provides. Grade II listed Hanover House, a
former Victorian textile mill in the ‘Little Germany’ area of central Bradford,
shows how VMZINC’s standing seam system in ANTHRA-ZINC has been used to
complement the Yorkshire stone and prevailing local use of slate.
Kraus Schönberg Architects sophisticated design for the Garbe Group involved
complete refurbishment and the addition of a roof extension. However,
because of the building’s listing, the 1300m2 zinc and engineered timber roof
was designed to be self-supporting. A further requirement of the conversion
to high specification apartments was to use a sustainable, high performance Skyline From Alumasc Chosen For Award-Winning O2 Building

AquaDrain 25 provides the ultimate solution to roof garden drainage, offering a structural,
Aquadrain 25 lightweight void former that can be used in place of heavy stone. The use of AquaDrain
25 with any roof garden design can improve infiltration rates whilst decreasing the added
pressures of other heavy products.

With a 96% void ratio, AquaDrain 25 has more than 3x the storage capacity of typical
Aquadrain 25 and Tuflex Impermeable Membrane Sedum stone gravel. When combined with the excessive costs of sourcing and transporting stone,
AquaDrain 25 can make essential job savings – especially helpful during today’s economical
climate.

AquaDrain’s main benefit is its structural capability. Designed to take loading, its clever
structural design gives more for less – allowing a void ratio of 96% combined with a loading
capacity of up to 200t/m2. When laying multiple plates, the unique clipping system
creates one structural mass and prevents later problems caused by lateral movement. The
lightweight, modular structure is one of the most open on the market and has consistently
shown that it is the best way to create both structurally capable and drainage efficient green
roofs.

Also available:
AquaDrain 50 - a larger void for more drainage.
Pluvial Cube - a modular storage cube that can provide drainage capacity for more excessive requirements.

Technal Helps To Create ‘Dazzling’ Façade For Iconic New Campus
Building And 2012 Olympic Training Centre
Architectural aluminium systems specialist, Technal, has helped to create a highly
distinctive and complex façade for an innovative new campus building at the
University of Sunderland, using three variations of its MX curtain walling system.
The CitySpace facility, which has been selected by the ODA as an Olympic and
Paralympic training camp for London 2012, has also achieved a BREEAM excellent
rating. Glazing contractors, AC Yule, worked alongside the design team from the
earliest stages to develop a highly engineered solution using two options from
Technal’s MX curtain wall suite – giving the appearance of bespoke façades but with
all the cost, lead-time and performance advantages of a proven aluminium system.
Technal’s MX SSG structural glazing was used to form distinctive coloured rectilinear
openings between pre-cast concrete panels in a striking random pattern. This
is the first time the system has been used in this way. MX SSG is a flush curtain
walling option which met the architect’s requirements for less visible aluminium and
clear expanses of glass. Interlayers for the laminated glass in five shades of green
give the building a clear identity and provide a strong contrast to the crisp white
L-shaped concrete panels on the most prominent elevation.

Jotun Helps Seaside SOS Revamp Farm Park

When Carruan Farm was purchased in the 1950s as a
traditional beef and sheep farm, the owners could have
had no idea that nearly 60 years later, the farm would be
featured on TV as one of Cornwall’s key tourist attractions.
And to show the farm in its very best light for its media
debut, woodstains from Jotun were used extensively to
spruce up the appearance. Today, the Carruan Farm Park is
still a working farm, with over 1000 ewes, a beef herd and
saddleback pigs. Five years ago, it expanded its operations
to incorporate a shop, restaurant and a farm experience for
children.
It was noted by the makers of Seaside SOS, hosted by
Duncan Bannatyne and thanks to the generosity of the
programme makers, a huge area of the centre has been
redecorated using the Jotun product range. The Demidekk
Ultimate and Butinox 1 paints were supplied by local
merchant, Rabart Decorating Merchants of Redruth for
external application on the restaurant, office buildings and
barns where the children’s activities take place. Butinox 1

New Daylighting Technology
Maximises Insulation
Architect and journalist Christopher Sykes looks at one of the latest projects to
use innovative new technology for insulating daylighting systems

Trend Glass Mosaic Wallpaper Shines In One of Europe’s latest projects to use Nanogel® aerogel insulation technology has opened in Dublin. The 4-storey facility, designed by architects A & D

created by having such large areas of fenestration in the building envelope had to be addressed.
The solution was extensive use of the airtight Kalwall + Nanogel daylighting
