Preface

1.4 About the System

The Opacity Monitor System is arranged as an opposed monitoring of the clarity
of air or line-of-sight opacity monitor. Mist, smoke, and dust affect the light
transmitted across a section between the two lenses.

As a standard configuration the Opacity Monitor System consists of the following

main elements in its standard configuration:
Opposed fiber optic heads with lenses
Fiber optic cables
Monitoring unit with digital display

The SBS1000 Smoke Density Monitor is used to monitor smoke in uptakes after
boilers, incinerators, and engines.

The Opacity Monitor System is a single pass system also called line-of-sight
that measures the opacity in the funnel or in the ambient air of the engine room. A
beam of light is transmitted across the line-of-sight. This beam is brought forth via
optic fibers. The optical transmitter and receiver are placed in the monitoring unit.

The Opacity Monitor System uses a high-power infrared light-beam. The beam of
light is projected via fiber optic cables across the line-of-sight / funnel. The beam
of light is absorbed and scattered by the smoke, mist, dust and vapor and thus the
amount of light received by the transceiver is reduced.

Please note that the Opacity Monitor System will react to any kind of smoke, dust,
vapor or other obstructions intercepting the light beam. Consequently the reading
of the sensor with change and possibly trigger an alarm. Depending on the appli-
cation, this might be perceived as "false alarm". On the other hand, such alarms
give you at the same time an indication of other malfunctions.

2 Installation

Read this chapter in its entirety before installing the system.

2.1 General
To avoid possible damaged to the equipment or errors in the monitoring readings
and alarm function, it is important to observe the following points carefully:
The location of the optic heads must be suitable for service & cleaning.
The optic heads are welded to the uptake which should not vibrate. Asyn-
chronous vibration of the optical heads can cause false alarms
In case of mounting on structures with thickness less than 6 mm it is recom-
mended that a double plate is fitted before mounting of the support for the optic
heads.
The optic heads must be securely welded to structure and properly aligned.
The optic heads and fibers must be protected against mechanical damage.
Do not turn the optic fibers in the optic heads without first loosening the lock
nuts.

2.2 Safety Aspects

Warning:
Follow the operating instructions! Please read the operating instructions carefully
its entirety before working on the system.

Warning:
Hazardous Voltage: Disconnect power before servicing the system. Ignoring this
warning can result in severe personal injury or material damage. Read the instruc-
tion carefully to ensure correct connection of all power and signal leads.

9
Installation

Ensure that the correct AC voltage is connected to the analyzer (see the rating
marked inside the monitoring unit cabinet and/or on the transformers inside the
cabinet).

Circuit breaker!
The installation must include a means of isolating electrical power by a switch or
circuit breaker external to the analyzer and within reach of operator. It must be
clearly marked.

Protective earth!
The analyzer must be connected to protective earth.

Installation and fault finding!

Electrical installation and fault finding on the analyzing system should only be
undertaken by a suitable trained and qualified engineer.

It should be pointed out that installation and operation of the Opacity Monitor
System and associated equipment should be carried out by skill, trained and
certified personnel, and that Scandinavian Boiler Service does not take any re-
sponsibility of the operation of the system and associated equipment whatso-
ever.

The successful and safe operation of this equipment is dependent upon proper
handling, installation, operation and maintenance.

2.3 Control at Delivery

2.4 Standard Installation

Based on the above standard scope of supply the Opacity Monitor System com-
prises the following components:

Figure 1: Standard installation of the Opacity Monitor System

Note: The optical heads are to be aligned opposite each other in such a way that
the light beam from the one lens hits the other lens. Thin structure will require ad-
ditional support in order to secure stable alignment.

11
Installation

2.4.1 Optic heads

The two optic heads are installed on 200 mm long 1 socket pipes, mounted by
welding, on each side of the smoke channel. Shortening the welding sockets to the
thickness of the isolation of the smoke stack will further increase the stability. The
stub pipes are of ordinary mild steel coated with a welding friendly zinc coating.
Best stability is achieved by inserting the welding socket into the funnel.

Special attention has to be given to the alignment of the sockets, so that they are
centered right opposite each other. A smaller size tube or angle bar pulled across
between the two sockets may be used as guidance for the alignment. Furthermore
the optional welding and adjustment bracket can be used for fine adjustment of the
tubes and additional stability.

After completing the welding the head housings are screwed onto the sockets and
fixed in position by the locking screws. To avoid tipping of the head housing due
to a loose thread the head housing can be either screwed down to the recess or use
something to fill the thread (e.g. Teflon tape).

2.4.2 Fiber-optic cables

The fiber-optic cables are mounted together with the lenses and the head cap into
the head housing. The optimal position of the fiber-optic cable in relation to the
lens depends of the type of lens used. With a standard lens about 15 mm of the 38
mm long threads on the end of the optic fiber tube should be inside the lens. In
other words about 15 mm of free threads outside the optic head, measured from
the locking nut.

The fiber optic tubes are then screwed into

the connectors at the bottom of the monitor-
ing unit or amplifier and display panel. Due
to the nature of optical fibers the angle with
which the light will exit the fiber cable may
vary from cable to cable and installation,
consequently is not repeatedly. The power
of the light ray exit from the optic fiber can
be adjusted by turning the cable slightly at Figure 2: Fiber-optic cable tip
the bottom of the monitoring unit.

2.4.3 Purge Air system

Purge air can normally be provided by the boiler F.D. Fan or as compressed clean
and dry air (instrument air 1-2 bar pressure, approx. consumption 2x5 l/min). If air
is taken from the F. D. Fan the non-return valve is installed in the air supply line.

12
SBS1000 Smoke Density Monitor

The flow is controlled using

Purge Air Hose
the flow control screw at
the purge air connection of
the head housing.

In order to secure a suffi-

cient, but not excessive
Optic Head Cap
purge air flow, you ought to
Flow Control Screw control the air supply with a
Figure 3: Optic head flow meter (optional equip-
ment). Too much air veloc-
ity will affect the effective light path length as it blows the flue gas out of the way.
Too little air flow will lead to increased fouling of the lenses. Consequently the
measurement is invalidated. If the instrument air is not sufficiently dry and clean
(i.e. it might contain water or oil) an air supply filter regulator (optional equip-
ment) should be used to clean the air and to even out variations in pressure.

2.4.4 Monitoring Unit

The monitoring unit is installed near the optic heads allowing for the connection
of the fiber optic cables. The alarm monitor is integrated with the digital display in
the monitoring unit.

2.4.5 Remote Digital Display and Alarm Annunciator (optional)

The remote digital display is usually placed where indication of the current opac-
ity level is needed. The remote digital display has the same functionality as the
digital display of the monitoring unit. The remote digital display can be combined
with the alarm monitoring function as described above. For more information
please see chapter 8.

The alarm annunciator is usually mounted in the alarm panel and connected to the
alarm relays of the monitoring unit. The alarm levels are configured via the digital
display of the monitoring unit.

2.4.6 Blower for Purge Air (optional)

If the sealing for the optic heads not can be provided from existing source an op-
tional sealing air blower should be installed near the fiber optic heads.

2.5 Electrical connections

Power supply (as specified see the rating marked inside the monitoring unit
cabinet and/or on the transformers inside the cabinet) for the system is connected
to the automatic fuse in the amplifier and monitoring panel. Please see also chap-
ter 6.

Monitoring instruments such as alarm monitoring, recorders and data loggers are
connected to the monitoring panel terminal 1 - 6. Here an overview of the Termi-
nals:
Terminal 1 & 2: Voltage output 0-10 VDC.
Terminal 3 & 5: Current output 20 4 mA, external voltage (24 VDC)
Terminal 3 & 6: Current output 20 4 mA, internal voltage
Terminal 7 & 8: Alarm relay No. 1 (default 20% opacity, delay 10 sec., NC)
Terminal 9 & 10: Alarm relay No. 2 (default 30% opacity, delay 10 sec., NC)

Caution
The SBS1000 Smoke Density Monitor is from factory mounted with a jumper be-
tween terminal 3 & 6. The jumper has to be removed in case a current output is
used. Please note that only one current output can be used.

After installation has been completed and the wiring has been carefully checked
the power can be switched on.

3 Commissioning

The following adjustment procedure will take you step by step through the ad-
justment of the amplifier and alarm monitor.

3.1 Calibration
During calibration, all possible obstruction to the infrared beam (such as oil mist,
smoke, or dust) must be absent in the section between the optic heads. In other
words, the transmission of the light must not be affected in any way.

The infrared transceiver measures translucency. The signal is inverted for the dis-
play of opacity. Therefore you first have to calibrate SPAN i.e. 100% opacity
which is zero translucency. Thereafter you can calibrate ZERO i.e. 0% opacity
which is 100% translucency.

SPAN is adjusted until the indicator displays 100% opacity, i.e. a total block-
ing of the infrared beam (0% translucency). For this purpose disconnect
the fiber optic cables and block the connection with your thumb. Be
careful not to turn the span calibration screw is turned too much. Keep
it at the edge between 99% and 100%.

ZERO is adjusted to produce the desired swing between the lightest and dark-
est sensing condition. Minimum signal contrast (i.e. the minimum for
100% translucency = zero opacity) will result in full output swing of
1.5:1. Maximum signal contrast will result in full output swing of 16:1

ZERO Be careful not to turn the span calibration screw is turned too much.
Keep it at the edge between 0% and 1%. If you would turn the screw
too much, the alarm levels would be triggered only at considerable
higher opacity levels than shown in the display.

15
Commissioning

If it is not possible to obtain 0% opacity, check the alignment and deflection of the
fiber optic heads. If the alignments and deflection is found to be correct and the
signal still not can be adjusted correctly, the fiber optic tube has to be turned in the
optic heads to change the center focus position of the light beam in relation to the
lenses (cf. section 2.4.4).

Both SPAN and ZERO are 15-turn clutched potentiometers with slotted brass
elements. A small, flat-bladed screwdriver is required for adjustment.
Remove one of the fiber optic cables completely from the monitoring unit. The
infrared beam is now interrupted. Adjust SPAN to 100% opacity.
Put back the fiber optic cable and adjust ZERO to 0% opacity.

The most accurate calibration is achieved bye using a voltmeter and the 0-10 VDC
output.

3.2 Setting of Alarm Levels

The default alarm levels are:
Alarm Level Alarm Delay Hysteresis
Relay 1 20% 10 s 2%
Relay 2 30% 10 s 2%

If you whish to change the alarm levels please follow the following fast setting
procedure (see chapter 9.4 for a more detailed instruction).

16
SBS1000 Smoke Density Monitor

4 Maintenance

After completing the installation and calibration of the opacity indication and set-
ting the desired alarm level, it is recommended during the initial period to control
the settings and if needed re-adjust the settings.

Besides normal cleaning of the optical heads and lenses, the system does not re-
quire any maintenance.

Cleaning intervals depend on the usual amount of oil, smoke, and dust that con-
taminate the lenses. The accumulation of dirt on the lenses will result in higher
opacity readings and might therefore give false alarms. Please make sure to set
sufficiently short cleaning intervals.

It is strongly recommended to calibrate the system after cleaning the lenses. How-
ever, smoke, vapor, or dust must not be present in the section between the optic
heads during calibration, i.e. the machine must be turned off.
