Introduction

Key information

This document is a step by step guide to show you how to submit your coursework.

There are some key facts with coursework submission that you should be aware of:

Coursework submissions ALWAYS have a deadline of 14:00.

You should submit your manual coursework via the following locations:
o Chemical Engineering UG and PGT: Reception Desk (Merz Court).
o Civil Engineering / Geomatics UG and PGT: Submission boxes in the Student Common
Room (Cassie Building).
o Electrical and Electronic Engineering UG and PGT: Reception Desk (Merz Court).
o Marine Technology UG and PGT: Reception Desk (Armstrong Building).
o Mechanical Engineering UG and PGT: Submission boxes outside the Reception Office
(Stephenson Building).
If you are required to submit both manually and electronically for a piece of coursework
then both pieces of work must be submitted before the deadline. Failure to do so will
incur an incorrect submission penalty.
Late pieces of work will be capped at 40% for Stage 1, 2 and 3 UGs and 50% for Stage 4
UGs and PGTs.
For further information on coursework procedures please refer to the PowerPoint
Coursework Procedures Presentation which is available on the SoE BlackBoard
Community.
Coursework is submitted using the NESS system.

Step 3

Send the document to print

Sign and date the front page

School of Engineering
2017/2018

For coursework that is up to 20 pages in length, you must staple your work together ONCE ONLY
in the TOP LEFT HAND CORNER and make sure that your header sheet is at the VERY FRONT of
your work.

If your coursework is more than 30 pages you will need to bind your work. Binding machines and
binding combs are available for students free of charge. These are located in the student
common room (Cassie Building) or at the Reception Office in each building. If you are binding
your work you must still make sure that your header sheet is at the VERY FRONT of your work.
9
Step 4

Place your coursework in the appropriate submission box or hand in to the Reception Office as
follows:

Chemical Engineering programmes: Merz Court submission boxes in the Reception Office

Civil Engineering / Geomatics programmes: Cassie Building submission boxes in the Student
Common Room

Electrical & Electronic Engineering programmes: Merz Court submission boxes in the
Reception Office

Marine Technology programmes: Armstrong Building Reception Office

Mechanical Engineering programmes: Stephenson Building submission boxes in Reception

Please note:

You will usually get a receipt via e-mail within 1 working day after the deadline.

N.B. Part time students should submit their coursework (for manual submissions) via email to
the relevant mailbox (see pages 3 and 4 for relevant contact details) and include a copy of the
header sheet. The 14:00 deadline is still in force for these submissions.

Submitting Coursework Electronically

Step 1

Log onto the University Website Student Learning Resources page at

https://my.ncl.ac.uk/students/learning
Click on NESS under Online Resources
You may wish to save this as a favourite! (https://ness.ncl.ac.uk/)
Log into NESS using your university login details

10
Step 2

Please note:

You will automatically get a receipt from NESS as soon as you submit your file/s.

N.B. Part time Students should submit electronically via NESS (for electronic submissions). The
14:00 deadline is still in force for these submissions.

Submitting Group work

Manual Submission of Group work

Follow the instructions for manual submission of coursework until step 3. Each student within
the group must print off their own header sheet from NESS, and sign and date it so that all
members of the group receive their mark. Failure to do this will attract a penalty.

All the header sheets should then be placed together at the VERY FRONT of the piece of
coursework and bound correctly. (Follow guidelines on binding for a manual submission).

Place your coursework in the appropriate submission box or Reception Office (depending on
your building see pages 3 and 10).

Electronic Submission of Group work

To submit group work electronically, each group must nominate a group leader. The group
leader will submit on his/her NESS page on behalf of the group. (Follow instructions for
electronic submission).

There must be a cover sheet at the front of the piece of coursework which names every member
of the group so that the School can mark everyone down in NESS as submitted.

Checking Receipts

Within a couple of days after the deadline date for your coursework you should check to see if
you have got your coursework receipt.

If you have not received your receipt, or have noticed any anomalies, then please report this to
the School Office as quickly as possible (see programme contact details on pages 3 and 4, or
speak to the staff in the Reception Offices in your buildings).

12
You are able to use NESS to view every piece of coursework that you have ever submitted
(manual or electronic):

Retrieving marks and feedback

Your lecturer will mark your coursework and will release the marks through NESS. The
coursework is then passed to the School Operations Team in the School Office.

If the coursework was a manual submission you will receive an e-mail from the School Office
telling you the work is ready to collect from the School Reception Office.

You must bring with you your student card and quote the MODULE CODE.

You should collect your coursework as soon as possible.

Vital feedback is often given on your coursework which will help you with your studies.

Once you have collected your coursework you should take it home and keep it safely (it may be
recalled later in the year for inspection by the External Examiner).

To see your marks on NESS you should do 1 of the following:

13
Or you can see your marks by going onto Module and Assessment Summary:

14
Please note:

If there are any differences between the mark you have received on NESS and the mark written
on your coursework then please inform your lecturer as soon as possible.
