LONGITUDINAL TEMPERATURE ANALYSIS for Temperature Gradient

In this case it is assumed that the super-structure is free to translate in the longitudinal direction and that the steel and concrete
have the same co-efficient of thermal expansion, so that uniform changes of temparature cause no stresses in the
superstructure. Thus only the effects of temparature differences through the depth of cross section is considered. The nominal
temperature differences are shown under. Stresses are calculated on composite section in steel units neglecting the effects of
shear lag.
For effect of temperature gradient on superstructure with composite steel plate girder and RCC deck slab,Refer Notification No. 27
for ammendment in Cl:218.3 of IRC:6-2000
characteristic crushing strength (fc') = 35 MPa Modulus of Elasticity of Conc. Ec = 29580 N/mm^2
Per. Flexural Compressive stress scbc = 11.670 MPa Modulus of Elasticity of Steel Es = 211000 N/mm^2
Per. Flexural tensile stress at service st = 0.000 MPa Coeff. of Thermal Expansion a = 1.20E-05 / 0C

Considering the temperature load as transient load ( Apply modular ratio m = 7.5 ) for Cast-in-situ RC Slab
Hence, short term composite section properties will be used for analysis for effect due to temperature gradient

DESIGN OF OUTER LONG. GIRDER (LG1) Composite Steel Plate Girder & RCC Deck Slab(41.38m)

Calculation for Differential Shrinkage Effect modified by Creep

The differential shrinkage strain between th cast-insitu deck slab and steel plate girder causes the stresses in the steel girder & RCC deck
deck slab. The equivalent force, that causes the stresses in the girder, is calculated from the basic principles. The force is equal to
product of modulus of concrete, area of flange and differential strain. The shrinkage strains between deck slab and steel plate girder
have been taken from Table-9 of Cl.5.4.5 of BS:5400:Part 5:2000

Considering the shrinkage effect as long term loading ( Apply modular ratio m = 15.0 ) for Cast-in-situ RC Slab
Hence, short term composite section properties will be used for analysis for effect due to temperature gradient
Modulus of Elast. of Structural Steel Es = 211000 N/mm^2

I. WEB SPLICE (USING A COMMON PLATE with HSFG BOLTS) (Splice location at 5.000 m from cL of Support)
due to DL + due to SIDL + due to CWLL

Bending Moment at Splice Location = 2353 + 1205 + 1905 = 5463.6 kN-m
The web splice carries a bending moment equal to the total design moment on the section multiplied by the ratio of the moment of inertia of
the web to the moment of inertia of the entire section. In addition to this moment, the web splice also carries the design shear at the splice
location and the moment due to the eccentricity of the shear force.

of the steel girder and embedded in the concrete slab to transmit the longitudinal shear and prevent any slippage between the concrete slab and the steel girder.
Flexible shear connectors in the form of studs and welded to steel plate girders will be used for joint of plate girder with RCC deck slab.
These shear studs will derive resistance to horizontal shear through bending of the connectors
As per Cl. 611.4.1.3.1, for welded stud connector of steel with minimum ultimate strength of 460 MPa, and yield point of 350 MPa and elongation of 20 percent:
Safe Shear Resistance for Each Shear Connector Q = Safe Shear Resistance for each Mild Shear Connector in Newton
Q = 1.49 h.d (fck)^0.5 for h/d < 4.2 h = Height of the Shear stud in mm
Q = 6.08 d^2 . (fck)^0.5 for h/d > 4.2 d = Diameter of Shear Stud in mm
Spacing of shear connectors p = SQ / V I V = SF due to SIDL & CWLL placed after composite section is effective
Refer Cl. 611.4.1.3.3 of IRC:22-2002 Ae = Area of Transformed Section on one side of Interface.
Longitudinal shear per unit length Yt = Distance of the cg. of the area under consideration from the N.A. of the composite section

CHECK OF SECTION FOR SHEAR AT SUPPORT:

Total Shear Force at Support = 1067.679 kN
This Vertical Shear is assumed to be resisted by the steel section alone (Cl.608.2.1 IRC: 22 - 2002)
For Plate Girder the cross sectional area of web is only effective against vertical shear (Cl.507.8.2.3 IRC: 24-2001)
Avg. Shear Stress in web = V/dw tw = 28.01 MPa
Maximum Shear Stress = 0.43fy = 107.5 MPa OK (Table 6.2 IRC : 24-2001)
For Stiffened web, allowable average Shear Stress (as per Cl.508.7.2 & Table-8.6 of IRC-24-2001)
Calculation of permissible average shear stress Distance Between Stiffeners s = 2956 mm
For, Ratio d/t = 148.875 clear dist. between flange plates d = 2382 mm
& Ratio s/d = 1.241 web thickness t = 16 mm
Per. average shear stress = 106.34 MPa
(Refer Table 8.6 IRC : 24-2001) Hence OK

Modulus of Elast. of Slab Conc. Ec = 29580.40 N/mm^2 Cl.5.4.3 Shrinkage modified by creep
Free shrinkage strain Decs = -2.00E-04 for generally in open air condition When the effects of shrinkage modified by creep

Bending Moment at Splice Location = 2286 + 489 + 1776 = 4550.4 kN-m
The web splice carries a bending moment equal to the total design moment on the section multiplied by the ratio of the moment of inertia of
the web to the moment of inertia of the entire section. In addition to this moment, the web splice also carries the design shear at the splice
location and the moment due to the eccentricity of the shear force.

SHEAR CONNECTORS DESIGN (FLEXIBLE TYPE: STUDS)

Since bond strength between concrete slab and steel girder is not dependable, mechanical shear connectors must be provided. They are connected to the top flange
of the steel girder and embedded in the concrete slab to transmit the longitudinal shear and prevent any slippage between the concrete slab and the steel girder.

CAMBER CALCULATIONS Composite Steel Plate Girder & RCC Deck Slab(41.38m)

CHECK FOR DEFLECTION OF STEEL PLATE GIRDER AND REQUIRED CAMBER

Plate girders will be cambered by cutting the web plate to the cambered shape before the flanges are attached. The dead-load deflection has
two components, one corresponding to DL and one to SIDL. For computation of deflection due to DL, the moment of inertia I of the steel section
alone will be used. For SDL, MOI that of composite section will be used. It should be noted that interior and exterior girders on straight bridges
should be cambered the same even if the design dead loads are different. For camber purposes all dead loads should be distributed equally to
all girders in a cross-section.
