Genre analysis of user guide matrix
I concluded several different things, that my user guide needs to incorporate, based
off of the 3 guides I analyzed. I want to have screen shots from my phone, because
most of the user guides I looked at had them and was also the easier to understand
format. I am going to have a home page basically showing a large picture of the phone
and a big caption for Orlandos phones. None of the user guides had page numbers but
they did have numbers for each step to make it easier, which I am also going to do. I
will be using understandable non-techy language because it seemed like the apple
websites jargon would throw off some customers. Im going to make my user guide
different than all the other options because I think they were all lacking pictures. I
believe if you want to teach someone something to someone theyve never done
before, you need to show them, not just tell them, if you want your time to not be
wasted. I am going to make user guide for someone that has never touched a smart
phone in their life, and Im going to use my phone because I know it best.

MEMORANDUM

Date: 10/12/17
To: Ms. Zanders
From: Brendan Bunzel
Re: Reflective memo
Enclosed are the materials for my ad campaign involving assignment 2:3 including: a chart
about others user guides in the form of a genre analysis, discussion, genre selection, my user
guide I created, and other requirements/supplemental materials, which you requested be
received by no later than 10/16/17.
The genre conventions for a user guide are a directoral internet video, a dvd, print out, booklet,
and online internet guide. I was able to follow the internet guide to the fullest, due to the
internet becoming the most popular form of reading in Zheijang because of the internet boom
going on over there. I slightly did modify my genre convention because the advertisements I
saw with user guides were actually not that good because most of them had a maximum of 5
photos, which just isnt enough in my opinion. I also changed the color of my headers to make
them pop out, more than the ones I saw.
I really wanted to make this user guide a video because last time I had so much fun creating my
video advertisement. I felt creating an online user guide would make more sense though due to
it being more easily accessed and because I wanted to play on the customer profile aspect of
the internet being this new trendy thing in Zheijang. I personally would rather read a small
guide then watch a full length video on how to do something, because it usually feels like bad
time management.
I managed to use a ton of pictures/graphics for my user guide. I chose things like real life
pictures for buttons and such on the exterior, screen shots off my phone for things that werent
readily available on google images, and of course google images to save some time but still get
the point across. I felt it was necessary to add as many pictures as I did, because I wanted it to
work for someone who is elderly and probably does not have a huge understanding of how to
work a smart device. I made my text big and stand out for the headers because I associate poor
eyesight with an older age, it does not happen to all of the elderly, but elderly on set blindness
has affected a lot of older people in my life.
My pictures definitley helped my user guide. It shows the audience/ person reading it, exactly
what to click and what clicking that app will do. My text for my pictures would prove usefull to
someone that has already had a smart phone but for people that are returning the phone
because they do not know how to perform basic functions, they need as many pictures as they
can get so they can follow along step by step with their own phone.
I got feedback on my assignment from a girl in my class. She was very nice and said my user
guide was great. I asked her to be honest with me because I really want to fix the problems in
my design. She told me I was very descriptive but because there was not enough pictures, it
was hard to follow and stay interested. She also told me the way I was describing how to access
functions on the cell phone werent that user friendly because it just had too much text. I took
all these things into consideration and added in as many photos as I felt necessary. I also dulled
down the text a little bit, it seemed I was just as a bad as the Apple site and added too much
personal jargon. The reason I took all of this information and used her constructive criticism is
because it is right and made my user guide much better over all.
The most challenging part of this sequence is dealing with Microsoft Word because it just
randomly decided to stop spell checking and I have spent all day tring to get spell check to do
literally anything. Word was also super annoying because everytime I would put in a picture it
would be extremely difficult for the text wrapping to corespond with what I was inputting.
Resizing pictures was absolutley terrible today because the size re-imager is inverted, so
resizing pictures the opposite of how I am used to was a drag. I know how to work Word well,
that is why all of these going wrong is so frustrating to me.
What surprised me about this assignment and sequence is how much fun I have making
advertisements and just internet based campaigning in general. It was extremely cool to learn
more about Zheijangs culture because I have always taken an interest in chinese culture.
I feel as if I know at least 3 times as much about chinese traditions, when compared to before
this assignment. Subtle things that we do here in the United States that I never even recognized
before would be considered extremely rude in china. For example, it is extremely inpolite to
walk in to a home with your shoes on.
If I had to do this assignment over again, I would just make a video because it would be way
more fun and because it would also be easier/ less time consuming. That being said I am
extremely happy with how my user guide came out. Because it was such a hassel to get Word
to work, it makes me more proud of my completed assignment because I wanted to give up
really badly half way through. I didnt give up though, and I think that is why my user guide
came out so good in my eyes.
