Pezo Von Ellrichshausen - Geometric Abstraction. AV Monographs 199

Avisa 2017 ISBN 9788469753309 Acqn 27986
Pb 24x29cm 112pp col ills 38.95

Between art and architecture, the work of Mauricio Pezo and Sofia von Ellrichshausen is a
consistent mix of geometric, spatial, and structural experimentation, where each piece is
conceived as a variation within a series. The introductory text by Fernando Perez Oyarzun
unveils the key aspects of the work of the Chilean architects and their particular way of
understanding architecture, and is followed by a chronological journey through 32 works and
projects developed since 2002, when they set up their studio in Concepcion, 500 kilometers south
of Santiago. This itinerary includes the bold prisms of their first houses - which brought them
world renown - as well as their latest projects.

nai010 publishers 2017 ISBN 9789462083875 Acqn 27791

Yorit Kluitman cycled through all 388 municipalities in the Netherlands, photographing the
landscape between them in absence of people and buildings. This book presents his tour as a
cross section of the ordered, strangely artificial Dutch landscape. Driven by a fascination for the
organised, graphical structure of open space and the apparently two-dimensional world that
encompasses the nation's urban areas, Kluitman has deconstructed this landscape as part of a
five-year study in collaboration with Vereniging Deltametropool. With contributions by various
specialists such as landscape architect Adriaan Geuze to former Rijksmuseum director Wim

The Noise Landscape, A Spatial Exploration of Airports and Cities

nai010 publishers 2017 ISBN 9789462083554 Acqn 27908
Hb 17x24cm 272pp 270ills 170col 56

The expansive areas around large airports, affected by noise, infrastructure, and transient forms
of architecture, have until now not been researched as a phenomenon. But these noise
landscapes are emerging worldwide, often surpassing the neighbouring city in size, and
sometimes rivalling it in economic importance. On the basis of eight European case studies
(Amsterdam, Zurich, London-Heathrow, Frankfurt, Munich, Madrid, and the two Paris airports)
this book provides the first account of how these landscapes emerged as the result of technical
determinations, what is taking place in them, and how they can be interpreted. The book is the
outcome of several years of research by the chair of Kees Christiaanse at the ETH Zurich.

of problem-solving methods. The diagram becomes a new realm of its own ('I am Diagram'), the
field of architecture is no longer limited to static objects in the wireless age ('We are Nomad'),
architecture is the will of an epoch translated into spaces that are not finished until they are used
('Storytelling about Interior'), architects make both spaces and things that are used in those
spaces ('Lifestyle Design'), and designers speak freely about who they are and what they do
('Dear my Architect'). Boldly designed and colourfully illustrated, each volume presents an

A State Beyond The State - Shenzhen And The Transformation Of Urban China
nai010 publishers 2017 ISBN 9789462083493 Acqn 27949
Pb 17x24cm 320pp 200ills 100col 45

Supported by numerous interviews and primary data, this book points out the threats posed by
typical large-scale projects of single SOEs (Stateowned enterprises), and further shows
alternative development potentials that match the long-term socioeconomic demand, by learning
from self-evolving SOE areas shaped by the combined forces of various public and private
stakeholders. Since China's 1980s economic reform, the ubiquitous semi-marketized SOEs have
established themselves as immovable landholders in the urban landscape. To improve our
understanding of the Chinese SOE urbanism, Ting Chen made a first-hand account and
evaluation of various SOEs' urban performances and the differing socioeconomic influences of
SOE land transformations.

Vlaams Architectuur Instituut 2017 ISBN 9789492567024 Acqn 27964

For many of Antwerp's inhabitants, the Linkeroever is unknown territory. From the banks of the
Scheldt, the opposite side of the river appears as a series of high-rises hovering over a green
strip. City architect Christian Rapp launched an international ideas competition in 2016, with the
ambition to address the Linkeroever as an object of design research and to encourage debate on
the importance of this "separate" part of the city for the whole of Antwerp. The competition sought
images that offer a vision of the future of the city, now published in a book which takes this
initiative as a starting point for examining larger questions about the state of urban development
and design today.

Jap Sam 2017 ISBN 9789490322847 Acqn 27976
Pb 19x26cm 122pp 21.95

This issue of Footprint explores the potential role of analytic philosophy in the context of
architecture's typical affinity with continental philosophy over the past three decades. In the last
decades of the twentieth century, philosophy became an almost necessary springboard from
which to define a work of architecture. Analytic philosophy took a notable backseat to continental
philosophy. With this history in mind, this issue of Footprint sought to open the discussion on
what might be offered by the less familiar branches of epistemology and logic that are more
prevalent and developed in the analytic tradition.

We are in the midst of redesigning the world and all its systems as we witness the biggest mass
movement of people, goods, factories, frenzied finance, and ideas in history. Vast flows make the
new norm nomadic. Yet there is a yearning for belonging, distinctiveness, and identity as the
'anytime, anyplace, anywhere' phenomenon enabled by digitization is changing how we interact
with space, place, and time. This is the Civic City. It tries to find a pathway through the major fault
lines, dilemmas and potentials of our time - shared lives, inequality, environmental distress, and
urban vitality. In this book, the inventor of the "Creative City" concept helps us navigate the
evolving urban landscapes and its potential.

formative period which is fundamental to understanding the genesis of his subsequent work and
his unceasing interest in industrial design. The engaging stories found in this book are an
essential instrument in illuminating and reinterpreting the architect with previously unpublished

yet, she continues, this is "not melancholic in its negative sense, but in the sense of a thoughtful
and pensive approach to life." Seventeen houses in Denmark are featured in this issue, along

through their work, key to understanding Danish architectural practice, both traditionally and in
the present. With work by Jeppe Utzon, LETH & GORI, Primus Architects, Atelier Lise Juel, and

has explored several building types in addition to the houses for which he is known. This issue

Designed by Adolf Loos in his later years, these two houses are twin examples of the architect's
plain, unadorned style of architecture, despite their difference in size and budget. Both Villa
Moller (1926-27) in Vienna and Villa Muller (1928-30) in Prague are illustrative of his 'Raumplan'
design method. Loos applied a utilitarian approach in using the entire floor plan that would only
later receive greater appreciation with the advent of postmodernism, an innovative spatialisation
comprising sequences of spaces drawn in three dimensions. Photographed by Yoshio Futagawa,
the two houses and the spatial brilliance of Loos come to life in an eclectic symbiosis with
modernism.

a series of films centered on the relationship between architecture and the acts of human life. The
films were sketched in storyboard format and later published as a series of documents on the
pages of Casabella magazine. The Fundamental Acts contain the possibility of reintroducing a
discourse on the relationship between architecture and ritual. They have been (re)produced by a

illuminate this idea further in various ways. Liz Teston, for instance, captures the theme when she
writes about the transient micro-urbanisms of protest architecture. Levi Bryant claims how we
design things can make a real difference in our lives, both socially and physically. Our cities' less
visible infrastructure is exposed by Julian Oliver, reminding us of our dependence on a deeper
physical reality, while Marco Casagrande shows how small-scale interventions can also serve as
a design methodology, creating ripple effects and a transformation of the larger urban organism.
