Decentralized Healthcare

/Concept
The narrative on decentralized renewable energy
(DRE) needs to move away from a rural
electrification agenda, towards an inclusive
development paradigm. The potential of DRE is its
ability to radically transform the way services are
delivered to the under-served populations.
Innovative processes and health delivery models
such as mobile clinics, boat clinics, e-clinics etc
challenge conventional healthcare delivery models
and attempt to take healthcare further to the
door-step of the people. A combination of
appropriate, efficient medical equipment powered
by DRE can enable more effective delivery of
healthcare at the last mile. There is a need to better
understand and develop the local ecosystem
(technology, training, policy, etc) that can facilitate
this transition.
The first edition of this workshop in October 2016
saw over 30 health practitioners, energy
practitioners, CSR entities and other stakeholders
debate on the energy gaps in decentralized health
care and how DRE can bridge these gaps. In the year
since, SELCO Foundation has worked with a number
of these partners to implement energy-health
interventions in diverse contexts. Several States are
also experimenting with solar powering PHCs. This
second edition of the workshop is to hear from the
health practitioners on the projects that have been
implemented, followed by a discussion on forging
partnerships to scale up these initiatives.
